Mommy and baby streptocarpus.

(Edited)

I don't know if any of you remember but a while ago (2 or 3 years) I cross pollinated two of my Streptocarpus plants. One is fully purple, the other one is double coloured with some extra shades on the bottom part.

he seeds are like dust and there was probably a gazillion of them! I sowed small part and gave away the rest. They sprouted lovely looking like tiny lettuce. Then repoting to bigger pots and after just a few weeks they started to bloom. I didn't know what to expect as I never done that before.
It turned out that every single plant had (had, cause I gave away some and some I managed to kill later on) different colour flowers and even different shape!

And now we are back to today's post. It happened that I have the mother plant and one of the babies blooming in the same time :) The mum is fully purple with quite large blooms as you see on the photo below. It is the one on the right. The petals have the colour just a little bit dark and some yellow in the center.

The smaller one (baby) has slightly different shade plus the top petals are lighter. Also different patterns on the bottom and more yellow. The dual colour thingies comes from the other parent which I will show later on.

The petals are very delicate and thin. And apparently tasty, cause I found a few half eaten by my kitty :p

I don't see those in the shops for some reason, but if you have a friend that has one, you can ask for a leaf. They also propagate just by sticking a fresh leaf to the soil. Like African Violets :)
Easy peasy and no messing around with seeds.

This is the other parent (photo below), and this one has a name: Streptocarpus harlequin damsel. It is not in bloom now and actually it suffered a bit due to summer heat. But this is how it looks like.
The petals are nice flat and have such cool colours that did spread in different amount to the kids.

And lastly some other colours I got from this cross. Some more purple or pink, some dark navy blue. Even got a light yellow one! And they are all sisters :)
So cool!!

They can have some pretty colours.. I have seen some very, very dark velvety ones that look almost like black.
Yay! I don't have any... besides the one I was showing some days ago.

Because these are cultivars, not species, you will get huge variation because the parent plants are hybrids themselves

Yep :) From the leaf they would be the same... but even self pollinated flower will give different results at this point. And I love it :D
