Painterly-ish + BTS

I've been wanting to learn how to light, photograph and process a painterly type image. This picture is a trial run on the lights and a few different techniques inside Photoshop to achieve the look I want. I was quite sloppy with it all as I didn't care to make myself up just for this test.

For once I remembered to take a behind the scenes shot to add to my notes for when I recreate this. So often I'm trying ten different light setups and by the time I want to revisit the same light, I have already forgotten which one was the nice setup. I think this setup will be something I'll have a lot of use for.

Note the bright new member to my photography setup; a Tether cable. It took a long time to get to me and I'm so glad it's finally here. It's incredibly useful to shoot tethered so you can immediately see what you get, and apply fast adjustments. I can't tell you how many times I've had to discard shots because I only find out they are out of focus when I get to the computer. Now I can keep checking the focus right on the big screen, the LCD at the back of the camera is not a good representation of the actual image you got in RAW.

That's awesome! When I had a photography studio I didn't have a tethered screen but I wish I had for the models to work with. I did take lots of photos of my set ups though... it saves so much time when you've got people waiting on you. Top image looks great. The light on your face is so good.

What kind of studio did you have, lots of natural light?

I think the big softbox overhead is awesome, it fills in really nicely on the parts where the key light doesn't hit.

No, no natural light at all. I set up a professional studio in my garage and so was able to control every part of the light, but I probably would have traded it all for some nice natural light.

I had 3 really big huge softboxes, including a crane thing so I could lift it overhead. I miss that studio...

Really love this portrait. The lighting is great, the highlights and fill tell a story itself, and then of course the model. That attitude! I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to convey, but I love it. Very intriguing.

I've only been following you for a year of so, but the selfie quality has moved to another level.

I can't wait to see what you do next :)

Thank you so much! To be honest I'm not really sure what I was trying either but I was a bit tired and just trying out lighting, I usually have a story to tell when I do proper self portraits. The attitude I can't hide though.

I'm chuffed that I have people who follow me, and you saying you have "only" followed me for a year is already a lot! Thank you!

It was last year that I got back into STEEM and because how hard discovery is on this blackchain, it took a little while to find some consistent creators.

That is one of the problems on this platform, so hard to find someone who has interesting content AND is consistent with it.
