Qingyuan - Day 1 of a visit / Ein Besuch, Tag 1

(Edited)
Mid May 2007 a student of mine invited me to visit her family in Qingyuan. For some reason I accepted the invitation (which I usually did not) & went for a trip to her family home in Qingxin district of Qingyuan.

Qingyuan is a fairly boring city to the north of Canton-City. There is not much to see in the city itself. The countryside, though, is probably even more interesting than the area around Shaoguan.

Don't remember which town in Qingxin district I was in. But as you can see from the pictures above & below, it was located nicely in between some mountains. Both pictures were taken from the roof of the family's house.

Don't recall exactly why, perhaps her family was busy with something, but I went out for a longer walk shortly after my arrival. On my way, I found this abandoned building, obviously from a less capitalist era:Vermutlich weil die Familie beschäftigt war, bin ich dort zunächst mal etwas spazierengegangen.

These old commie buildings in South China have a certain charm, I think. Have a lot of photos of such houses in Shaoguan, shortly before they were torn down. Have no idea how to put these pictures into a post, though.

In a shed beside that building I found this spider. It very much looks like it is closely related to the European cross spider. It's only missing the cross.

Rice paddies in front of the mountains. Where there are rice fields, there are frogs. In this case I only found one. It's probably a Hong Kong paddy frog (Fejervarya multistriata).Reisfelder vor den Bergen. Wikipediaartikel).

Then I reached a nice, though probably fairly poor village:Dann kam ich in ein interessantes, wenn auch vermutlich recht armes Dorf:

e9hw1x2cf3.jpg

The weather was not very nice, it kept drizzling. When I walked through that village, some villagers offered to give me an umbrella. But it was rather warm, the drizzle was not too bad, & I didn't know these people. So, of course I said "No, thank you." & walked on. One guy even ran after me with an umbrella for several hundred meters, trying to give to me.Das Wetter war eher mies, es nieselte ohne Ende. Also lehnte ich natürlich ab & ging weiter.

cqfr4i06q1.jpg

Finally he gave up & I could walk on in peace. From the village I had seen something very interesting on the mountainside. On the above image it is visible. Another farmer cemetery. Although the village seemed rather poor, it looked like proper tombs.

tnbs30o6ua.jpg

But they were quite a bit uphill. Took me a while to get there. On the way I encountered this lump of houses. I suppose, it's a complete farmstead. To the left is a (for South China) typical village house, albeit pretty small. The yellow-bricked buildings are stables & barns.

I love the Cantonese countryside. The south of Canton is too densely populated, though even there you can find a lot of nice spots. But north of Canton-City is where it gets really interesting. Look at how clear the water is. In places like Dongguan you won't find anything like this.

zz4pbpclqo.jpg

That's where I took the title photo. A bit further on was the cemetery. But because this post is already getting rather long, I will dedicate a whole post to it.Diese Baumpilze fand ich an der Stelle, wo das Titelfoto entstand.

pta8x2eeco.jpg

On the way back I found this wonderful stream:Auf dem Rückweg fand ich diesen herrlichen Bach:

vd2hg8rdsv.jpg

Well, this being China, everything nice & natural will be spoiled very quickly. A few meters on the brook was flowing through a small gorge & as is typical in China:Nunja, wie das in China so ist, ist die Herrlichkeit auch schnell wieder vorbei.

pmd138968b.jpg

One of the things I hate about China. People just throw their garbage into the landscape. So, next time the media tell you about the great waste collection system in Shanghai, remember that China is not Shanghai.

wsrgthzrbi.jpg

The village itself was kept fairly clean, though. There was almost no garbage in the alleyways, but a few chickens were looking for food:Das Dorf selber hielt man aber relativ sauber.

p4n4l23y9n.jpg

In such a small village everyone is related to everyone else somehow. So, they can let their chickens roam freely. Not only chickens, though:In so einem kleinen Dorf kennt jeder jeden. Also kann man seine Hühner ruhig frei laufen lassen. Nicht nur Hühner:

odi4xs7rrl.jpg

This pig almost completely ignored me. It walked past me & disappeared into the village.

4tuszohu7p.jpg

& that should be it for the 1st day in Qingyuan. The 2nd day & the cemetery will be handled in separate posts. For now, just a few more pics:& das soll's für den ersten Tag in Qingyuan gewesen sein.

Stunning photography and very interesting reading. Not a place that an avarice tourist would visit @tipu curate 😊

Thanks.
Places with fewer tourists are those that I prefer to see. But if you don't know China, it's anyway advisable to stick to the known places.

What a gorgeous place with such nice green colors. It does not look boring at all :)

Thanks!
The city is boring, the landscape isn't.

I am actually quite surprised about the city, because based alone on the photos about the city, I would not even say that the city is in China. Looks like an ordinary city from Europe. Thank you for introducing this place to us. Greetings from Hungary!

Thanks!
Actually, life in the bigger cities in China is not that much different from Europe. But towns like Qingyuan can be another affair. That's why I like these smaller places in China, though what is nice about Qingyuan is largely the landscape around it.
