Ninghai - Qiantong "Ancient Town"

A day after our visit to the Zhejiang East "Grand Canyon" we went to Qiantong, on Chinese websites referred to as 'ancient town'. It is located just a few kilometres east of the canyon & can also be reached by bus (line 606, if I'm not mistaken).	Einen Tag nach unserem Ausflug zum Zhejiang "Grand Canyon" fuhren wir nach Qiantong, einer Ortschaft traditionellen Stils. Der Ort befindet sich nur wenige Kilometer östlich der Schlucht & kann genauso mit dem Bus angefahren werden (Linie 606, soweit ich das sehe).

Qiantong was founded towards the end of the Song Dynasty, in 1233. It grew into a small town during Ming & Qing. Most of the 1300 buildings you can see nowadays are probably from the Qing Dynasty. Not what I would call ancient, but still quite old.	Qiantong wurde gegen Ende der Songdynastie gegründet, im Jahr 1233. Während Ming & Qing entwickelte es sich zu einer Kleinstadt. Die meisten der noch stehenden 1300 Gebäude stammen wohl aus der Qing-Dynastie. Nicht antik, aber doch recht alt.

Also in 1233 the ancestor of the Tong family came to Qiantong. Nowadays, some 80% of the inhabitants carry the family name Tong. (Must have been quite an incestuous town at times.)	Im Jahr 1233 kam auch der Ahnherr der Tongfamilie nach Qiantong. Heute haben 80% der Einwohner seinen Nachnamen. (Muß zeitweise ein recht inzestuöses Örtchen gewesen sein.)

You often find courtyard homes like above there. People are actually still living in them, so I was a bit reluctant to go inside, although we were told that would be perfectly alright. Just like in Beijing's hutongs, the preference for courtyard homes means that the alleyways are quite boring, to be honest. You mostly see walls. Not as bad as in Beijing, but still.	Viele der Gebäude sind Wohnhöfe wie der oben. Sie sind immer noch bewohnt, weshalb ich eher ungern hinein ging, obwohl man uns gesagt hatte, das sei völlig in Ordnung. Wie auch in Pekings Hutongs bedeutet die Vorliebe für Wohnhöfe, daß die Gassen eher langweilig sind, ehrlich gesagt. Man sieht halt hauptsächlich Mauern. Nicht so schlimm wie in Peking, aber doch.

Good about Qiantong is (or was, not sure whether it still is) that it is not a commercial hellhole like many other tourist attractions in China. In Dali, for example, pretty much every house in the old town is a souvenir shop. You see nothing but shops. In Qiantong, not so. But that also means that maintenance is not necessarily the highest priority.	Gut an Qiantong ist (oder war, bin nicht sicher wie es heute aussieht), daß es nicht zu einem kommerzialisierten Höllenloch wie viele andere Touristenattraktionen in China verkam. In Dali z.B. ist so ziemlich jedes Haus in der Altstadt ein Souvenirshop. Nichts als Läden. Nicht so in Qiantong. Das bedeutet aber auch, daß der Gebäudeunterhalt nicht höchste Priorität hat.

As you can see, windows to the outside world were not very important (perhaps because winter can be quite cold there). Also not much decoration.	Oben sieht man den Eingang zu einem Wohnhof (auch auf dem Titelbild) & die Wand daneben. Wie man sieht waren Fenster zur Außenwelt auch nicht sehr wichtig (vielleicht weil der Winter dort recht kalt sein kann). Auch kaum Verzierungen.

Inside on the other hand, you not only have numerous windows, but a lot of decorations, mostly in the form of wood carvings. Quite some effort must have gone into all the woodwork. In the past, the people living there were probably rather wealthy.	Innen allerdings gibt es nicht nur diverse Fenster, sondern auch viele Verzierungen, meist als Holzschnitzereien. In die Holzarbeiten muß einiges an Aufwand geflossen sein. Die Leute, die dort in der Vergangenheit lebten, waren wahrscheinlich ziemlich wohlhabend.

Here you can see that people living there in 2008 were probably not so wealthy. They were traditional, small-scale farmers, it seems.	Hier sieht man, daß jene, die dort 2008 lebten, wohl nicht so wohlhabend waren. Scheint sich eher um traditionelle Kleinbauern gehandelt zu haben.

In one place there were not only wood carvings as decoration, but also some nice stone reliefs. Originally, they may have been single pieces, but during some reconstruction they cut them up & put them back together. In the 2nd photo you can see that the pieces are numbered.	In einem Hof gab es nicht nur Holzschnitzereien als Verzierung, sondern auch einige nette Steinreliefs. Ursprünglich könnten sie aus einem Stück gehauen worden sein, aber während einer Rekonstruktion wurden sie zerschnitten & wieder zusammengesetzt. Auf dem 2. Foto sieht man, daß die Stücke numeriert sind.

The same house also had extremely delicate wood carvings, some even gilded.	Im gleichen Hof gab es auch einige sehr feine Holzschnitzereien, teils sogar vergoldet.

The door guardians suggest it could once have been a temple, but I'm not sure. More probably it was the ancestral hall (maybe used as a temple) of a rich family.	Die Türwächter lassen vermuten, daß es sich mal um einen Tempel gehandelt haben könnte, bin aber nicht sicher. Wahrscheinlicher handelt es sich um eine Vorfahrenhalle (vielleicht auch als Tempel genutzt) einer reichen Familie.

Above is one of the door guardians. In most proper temples, these guardians are statues, not reliefs.	Oben sieht man einen der Wächter. In den meisten Tempeln sind diese Wächter Statuen, nicht Reliefs.

More very nice wood carvings. May be boring for you, but I really like stuff like this (as long as it's not in my home where I would have to clean it).	Noch mehr schöne Schnitzereien. Mag für den Leser langweilig sein, aber mir gefällt sowas (solange es nicht bei mir zuhause ist, wo ich es saubermachen müßte).

Below you can see why I'm not sure whether it's a temple or not. Never seen a temple with the Buddha behind a screen, in front of which stand thrones, well, chairs perhaps for family elders.	Unten sieht man, warum ich mir nicht sicher bin, ob Tempel oder nicht. Kenne keinen Tempel, in dem der Buddha hinter einem Schirm steht, vor dem thronartige Stühle stehen, vielleicht für die Familienoberhäupter.

Some Chinese tourists didn't have much respect for the old stuff. "A throne? Must try!"	Manche chinesische Touristen hatten wenig Respekt für die Antiquitäten. "Ein Thron? Muß ich ausprobieren!"

Overall Qiantong is definitely worth a visit, particularly if it is still not a tourist trap like most other "ancient" villages in China. When I was there, it still looked very authentic.	Insgesamt ist Qiantong definitiv eine Reise wert, besonders wenn es noch immer nicht so eine Touristenfalle ist wie die meisten anderen "traditionellen" Dörfer in China. Bei meinem Besuch erschien es noch sehr authentisch.
