Ningbo Polytechnic / Polytechnikum Ningbo
| At the end of the winter holiday 2008, I took the time to take some pictures of the polytechnic campus. So, today I'll introduce the college a bit & talk about the tertiary education system in China in general. | Zum Ende der Winterferien 2008 nahm ich mir die Zeit, den Campus des Polytechnikums zu fotografieren. Heute will ich die Hochschule & das dahinterstehende tertiäre Bildungssystem vorstellen. |

| Working in Ningbo, well, Beilun, was a pretty frustrating experience. The university of Shaoguan is not a top university by far, but it is still much better than Ningbo Polytechnic. I didn't have much choice, though, because in Shaoguan they originally told me I would get another one-year contract. Only shortly before the end of the term they told me, that wouldn't go through. Therefore I had to take what I could get. | Die Arbeit in Ningbo, naja, Beilun, war ziemlich frustrierend. Die Uni Shaoguan ist nicht gerade eine Top-Universität, aber doch deutlich besser als das Polytechnikum Ningbo. Hatte jedoch keine große Wahl, da es in Shaoguan ursprünglich geheißen hatte, ich bekäme einen neuen Vertrag. Erst kurz vor Ende des Semesters erfuhr ich, daß daraus nix wurde. Mußte also nehmen, was ich kriegen konnte. |

| Just like in Shaoguan, in Beilun I taught English. Can't really complain about the English majors there. They were not as good or as motivated as the ones in Shaoguan, but I could work with them. The language department complained that the grades I gave were not high enough & said that I should change them. The reason was that other departments had higher grades & the language department didn't want to look bad in comparison. Phhh... | Wie in Shaoguan unterrichtete ich in Beilun Englisch. Über die Hauptfachstudenten dort kann ich mich eigentlich nicht beschweren. Waren nicht so gut oder motiviert wie in Shaoguan, aber man konnte mit ihnen arbeiten. Die Sprachabteilung beklagte sich über meine angeblich zu niedrigen Noten, die ich deshalb ändern sollte. Man wollte nicht hinter anderen Abteilungen zurückstehen, wo es bessere Noten gab. Pfff ... |

| Beside the majors, I also had to teach students of Korean who had English as a minor, & a class ... hmm ... group of wealthy students who failed their gaokao, but wanted to study in the USA. It was total horror to teach them. | Neben den Hauptfachstudenten mußte ich auch Koreanischstudenten sowie eine Klasse ... hmm .. Gruppe von reichen Studenten (die beim Gaokao versagt hatten, aber in den USA studieren wollten) unterrichten. Totaler Horror. |

| The Korean students essentially just wanted to sit it out. They thought, it was enough to regularly show up in class, but wouldn't need to pay any attention or - gasp - learn anything. That led to numerous problems when I actually graded their performance in class & homework. So much so, that the polytechnic decided not to let me test them at the end of the term, because I would actually let people fail. | Die Koreanischstudenten wollten das Semester nur aussitzen. Dachten, es reiche, regelmäßig zum Unterricht zu kommen, ohne aufzupassen oder - oh Schreck - gar etwas zu lernen. Gab endlos Probleme, als ich doch tatsächlich ihre mündliche Leistung & Hausaufgaben bewertete. Soviele Probleme, daß man entschied, mich keine Prüfungen durchführen zu lassen, da ich Studenten durchfallen lassen würde. |

| The wealthy 'students' were even worse. Don't remember exactly how many there were, around 15, I think. Only 3 to 4 of them showed up regularly, another 5 or 6 occasionally. Even of those who showed up, most didn't actually take part in class. One of them even attacked me when I took away his mp3-player. Oh well, no exams for them, either. Their parents' money took care of that. | Die reichen 'Studenten' waren sogar noch schlimmer. Waren so um die 15, glaube ich. Davon kamen nur 3-4 regelmäßig zum Unterricht, 5 oder 6 ab & zu. Selbst von denen, die anwesend waren, nahm kaum jemand am Unterricht teil. Einer griff mich gar tätlich an, als ich ihm den MP3-Player wegnahm. Natürlich auch keine Prüfungen für sie. Das Geld ihrer Eltern reichte. |

| So, why were the students at the polytechnic worse than those at the university in Shaoguan? The reason is the system in China. Which tertiary education you get depends almost entirely on the result of the gaokao. & that result almost entirely depends on rote learning. The more diligent you are, the better your memory, the better your gaokao. The better your gaokao, the better the college you are allowed to attend. (There are of course exceptions. China is corruption heaven, after all. & cheating is widespread.) | Warum waren die Studenten am Polytechnikum schlechter als die in Shaoguan? Der Grund liegt im chinesischen System. Die Qualität der tertiären Ausbildung hängt fast komplett vom Resultat des Gaokaos ab. & dieses Resultat wiederum hängt fast ausschließlich vom Auswendiglernen ab. Je fleißiger man ist, je besser das Gedächtnis, desto besser der Gaokao. Je besser der Gaokao, desto besser die Hochschule, an die man darf. (Gibt natürlich Ausnahmen. China ist schließlich Zentrum der Korruption. & Betrug ist weitverbreitet.) |

| Anyway, in general you can say that the higher up in the rankings a college is, the more diligent the students. In China you have a few dozen top universities, a few hundred 2nd tier universities & numerous 3rd tier universities (of which Shaoguan Uni is one). Polytechnic colleges are below university level, vocational colleges even lower. (Again, there are exceptions. There are colleges of a higher level, because they are affiliates of better universities.) | Generell kann man sagen, daß je höher eine Hochschule im Ranking ist, desto fleißiger sind die Studenten. In China gibt es einige dutzend Elite-Unis, einige hundert Unis 2. Rangs & diverse Unis 3. Rangs (wovon eine die Uni Shaoguan ist). Polytechnische Hochschulen sind darunter angeordnet, Berufsbildende Hochschulen noch tiefer. (Auch hier gibt es aber Ausnahmen, wenn es sich um von Elite-Unis betriebene Hochschulen handelt.) |

| Hence, the lower the level of the college, the less diligent the students. & since virtually nobody fails the final exams (because that would make the college look bad), the lower the college, the harder it is to motivate your students. | Also gilt natürlich auch: je schlechter die Hochschule, desto fauler die Studenten. & da so gut wie niemand durchfällt (wäre schlecht für's Image der Hochschule), wird es immer schwieriger, die Studenten zu motivieren je niedriger die Hochschule eingeordnet ist. |

| If you want to work in China (which I do not recommend, at least as long as emperor Xi reigns), you should try to get a job at a university. The students are in general willing to learn & fairly easy to work with. The better the university, the easier. If, on the other hand, you are a lazy arse not interested in helping your students to learn, you might try to find a job at a vocational college where you get away with showing movies in class. (But in the interest of the students, please don't work as a teacher at all!) | Wer in China arbeiten will (was ich nicht empfehlen kann, solange Kaiser Xi noch regiert), sollte also versuchen, an eine Uni zu kommen. Die Studenten sind in der Regel lernwillig & es ist einfach, mit ihnen zu arbeiten. Je besser die Uni, desto einfacher. Wer andererseits ein faules Arsch ist & unwillig, seinen Studenten beim Lernen zu helfen, mag sich an einer Berufshochschule verdingen, wo man den Unterricht auch mit Vorführung von Filmen bestreiten kann. (Im Interesse der Studenten sollte man aber lieber gänzlich auf eine Tätigkeit als Lehrer verzichten.) |

| If you want to work as a teacher in China, you need a bachelor degree & at least 2 years of teaching experience. How strict they check this depends on the school you work for, though. Universities & public schools are usually quite strict (unless you have connections). Private language schools often even employ (illegally) people without any qualification. | Wer in China als Lehrer arbeiten will, braucht einen Bachelor & mindestens 2 Jahre Lehrerfahrung. Wie streng das eingehalten wird, hängt von der Schulform ab. Unis & öffentliche Schulen sind recht streng (außer man hat Verbindungen). Private Sprachschulen stellen (illegal) oft sogar Leute ohne jede Qualifikation ein. |

| Private schools & training centres are a high risk for you, though. There are numerous horror stories of people working illegally in China. | So much for the Chinese education system, some words about the campus of the Ningbo Polytechnic. As you can see from the pictures, there is a lot of water, but unlike in Shaoguan, it's not very clear. & there is by far not as much wildlife as in Shaoguan. It's also by far not as large. | Soviel über das chinesische Bildungssystem, noch ein paar Worte zum Campus in Beilun. Wie man an den Bildern sieht, gibt es viel Wasser, aber anders als in Shaoguan kein sehr klares. & es gibt bei weitem nicht soviel Viehzeug wie in Shaoguan. Ist aber auch nicht so ausgedehnt. |
| When I was working there, they also had some kind of curfew. Not only had the students to stay in their dorms after 10 pm, the whole campus was closed. So, if you came home late, you had to discuss with the guards at the gate. Once they know you, it's not a problem anymore. | Als ich dort arbeitete, gab es auch eine Art Sperrstunde. Nicht nur, daß die Studenten nach 22 Uhr nicht mehr aus den Wohnheimen durften, sondern der ganze Campus wurde dichtgemacht. Wenn man zu spät nach Hause kam, mußte man erstmal mit den Torwächtern diskutieren. Wenn man mal bekannt war, legte sich das aber. |

| Highly concentrated students. The polytechnic was my first experience of students actually falling asleep during class. It's normal that Chinese students nap in the breaks, but not in class. But in Ningbo... Particularly bad were the wealthy students in the language laboratory. | Hochkonzentrierte Studentinnen. Am Polytechnikum kamen mir erstmals Studenten unter, die im Unterricht einschliefen. Es ist normal, daß chinesische Studenten jede Pause für Nickerchen nutzen, aber nicht den Unterricht. In Ningbo jedoch... Besonders schlimm waren die reichen Studenten im Sprachlabor. |
