Guangzhou, hotels & a flight / & ein Flug
| After my then-girlfriend had visited me in Ningbo, we went for a few days to Canton City (Guangzhou). It was still winter holiday 2008 & I had a bit of time before the new term started. But because this was also the last chance to be together with my girlfriend for a while, there was not much opportunity for taking photos, since we had other stuff on our minds. | Nachdem meine damalige Freundin mich in Ningbo besucht hatte, flogen wir für einige Tage nach Kanton-Stadt (Guangzhou). Es waren immer noch die Winterferien von 2008 & ich hatte noch etwas Zeit, bevor das neue Semester anfing. Da dies aber auch für eine Weile die letzte Chance war, mit meiner Freundin zusammen zu sein, gab es nur wenige Möglichkeiten zum Fotografieren. Wir hatten anderes im Sinn. |

| Hence, this post will not focus as much on pictures, but I will talk a bit about hotels & flights in China. The hotel I had booked in Canton was the most expensive one I ever had in China. It was a special offer at 300 RMB per night (back then roughly 30 Euro). That special offer was a room in a side building, not the main one, but as you can see, it was a majestic place: | Daher fokussiert dieser Beitrag weniger auf Bilder. Es war ein Sonderangebot für 300 RMB pro Nacht (damals ca. 30 Euro). Das Angebot war nur ein Zimmer im Nebengebäude, aber wie man sieht, dennoch königlich: |

| Well, majestic... In some spots you could see some wear & tear, but overall really nice. Definitely higher standard than what you would usually find in the 200-300 RMB range. The hotel still exists, it's called the Nanyang King's Gate (Changsheng) Hotel, located in Tianhe. Prices seem to vary greatly, depending on the dates. In 1 month from now the cheapest room is 48€, not much more than in 2008 (considering that the RMB appreciated a lot since then). Next week, though, it would be 106€. | Naja, königlich ... Es gab einige Ecken, wo schon etwas Abnutzung sichtbar war, aber insgesamt doch sehr nett. Definitiv höherer Standard als das, was man üblicherweise für 200-300 RMB bekommt. Das Hotel gibt es übrigens immer noch & nennt sich Nanyang King's Gate (Changsheng) Hotel & liegt in Tianhe. Zimmerpreise variieren stark, je nach Datum. In 1 Monat kostet ein Raum 48€, nicht viel mehr als 2008 (wenn man bedenkt, daß der Yuan stark gestiegen ist). Nächste Woche wäre der Preis aber 106€. |

| Electric kettles are standard in Chinese hotels, even the cheapest ones. In many hotels you also get free green tea. The safe you see above is not standard, can only be found in better hotels. Snacks & drinks beside the TV are what goes for a minibar in many hotels. Don't use it, if you value your money. Outside your hotel you will find 24-hour convenience stores which sell the stuff for 1/4 or 1/5 of the price. Beside the bed you will usually find "love accessories", which always includes condoms, but depending on the hotel also more sophisticated equipment. Most hotels in China are also used as hour hotels, so that stuff is standard. | Wasserkocher sind in chinesischen Hotels Standard, selbst in den billigsten. In vielen Hotels gibt es auch gratis grünen Tee. Der oben zu sehende Safe ist kein Standard, sondern nur in besseren Hotels zu finden. Snacks & Getränke neben dem Fernseher sind das, was in China oft als Minibar durchgeht. Finger weg! Es gibt überall kleine 24-Stunden-Kioske, die das Zeug zu 1/4 oder 1/5 des Preises verkaufen. Neben dem Bett gibt es normalerweise 'Liebeszubehör', immer mit Kondomen, aber je nach Hotel auch mit deutlich aufwendigerem Zeug. Die meisten Hotels in China fungieren auch als Stundenhotels, deshalb ist das Standard. |

| Toilets are important. At least for me, they show how properly the cleaning crews work. Before you unpack anything, check the toilet bowl! If the outside is clean, no urine stains or puke leftovers sticking to it, you can be fairly sure that the cleaners did their job. Even so, the first thing I do, is to clean the toilet seat with soap. Just to be sure. If you're not happy with the state of the room, you can usually without a problem ask for another one, or, if it's really bad, cancel your booking. | Toiletten sind wichtig. Zumindest für mich zeigen sie, wie ordentlich die Reinigungskräfte arbeiten. Bevor man auspackt sollte man die Toilettenschüssel checken. Wenn die Außenseite sauber ist, ohne Urin- oder Kotzflecken, kann man relativ sicher sein, daß vernünftig gereinigt wird. Ich reinige jedoch auch dann den Toilettensitz noch mit Seife. Zur Sicherheit. Wer mit dem Zustand des Zimmers nicht glücklich ist, kann meist problemlos wechseln oder, wenn's richtig schlimm ist, die Buchung stornieren. |

| For comparison's sake, above & below is the hotel near the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport we took because our flight was delayed (very common in China) & we didn't want to go downtown at 2 a.m. It was almost as expensive as the luxury hotel, because we didn't have much choice near the airport. You can see the difference. If you look closely, you can eg. see stains on the carpet & the plastic at the bed's headrest being ripped. | Zum Vergleich hier noch das Hotel, das wir am Flughafen Baiyun nahmen, weil unser Flug Verspätung hatte (normal in China) & wir nicht um 2 Uhr nachts noch in die Stadt fahren wollten. War fast so teuer wie das Luxushotel, weil man in der Nähe des Flughafens wenig Auswahl hat. Man sieht aber den Unterschied. Wer genau hinsieht, findet Flecken auf dem Teppich & das aufgerissene Plastik am Kopfende des Bettes. |

| Toilet & shower are better than average, although I don't like this kind of shower. In almost all hotel rooms above 100 RMB per night you will find Western toilets. Below 100 RMB you have to be careful. Soap & tooth brushes are usually free. Nowadays there are some hotels, though, which want you to pay for that stuff, or even for the towels. | Toilette & Dusche sind besser als der Durchschnitt, obwohl ich diese Art Dusche nicht mag. In fast allen Hotelzimmern über 100 RMB findet man westliche Toiletten. Unter 100 RMB muß man aufpassen. Seife & Zahnbürste sind üblicherweise kostenlos. Heutzutage gibt es jedoch einige Hotels, welche dafür bezahlt werden wollen, manchmal sogar für Handtücher. |

| Back in 2008 I preferred elong.net to book hotels in China. They had the best prices &, unlike ctrip.com (now trip.com), no hidden fees. But the website has become largely unusable for foreigners. As a foreigner, nowadays you can simply use booking.com or trip.com. Both are OK. If you know Chinese, there are cheaper alternatives, though, like qunar.com. | 2008 buchte ich in China am liebsten über elong.net. Die hatten die besten Preise &, anders als ctrip.com (jetzt trip.com), keine versteckten Gebühren. Aber elong.net ist für Ausländer heutzutage weitgehend unbrauchbar. Als Ausländer kann man einfach booking.com oder trip.com nutzen. Beide sind OK. Wer Chinesisch kann, hat billigere Alternativen wie qunar.com. |

| Back to the trip in 2008: We really went out once in a while. & because it was the Chinese New Year holiday, we were not alone. Chinese like crowds. | Then it was time to go back to Ningbo. That year in Ningbo was quite expensive for me, because I travelled between Ningbo & Canton so often. Luckily, the flights between Ningbo or Hangzhou & Canton were very low at the time. I usually got deals of 80 to 90% off. For flight bookings goes the same as for hotels. The best deals in China were (& are?) available up to around 10 days before the flight. | Zeit, nach Ningbo zurückzukehren. Dieses Jahr in Ningbo war ziemlich teuer für mich, da ich so oft zwischen Ningbo & Kanton hin- & herflog. Zum Glück waren die Flüge zw. Ningbo oder Hangzhou & Kanton damals sehr günstig. Waren normalerweise 80-90% reduziert. Für Flugbuchungen gilt dasselbe wie für Hotels. Die besten Angebote findet man aber bis zu ungefähr 10 Tagen vor dem Flug. |

| Hainan Air was often the cheapest airline for this route. But I tended to avoid them, if possible. Back in 2008, their planes were not generally in a good state, as you can see from the loose panels. The seats were rather uncomfortable, worn out so much that you could feel the metal frame below with your behind. The windows were often outright dirty or, as in this case, a bit milky. | Hainan Air war oft am billigsten auf diesen Routen. Ich versuchte aber, sie zu meiden. Damals waren deren Flugzeuge meist in miesem Zustand, wie man an den losen Panelen sieht. Die Sitze waren unbequem, so durchgesessen, daß man den Metallrahmen mit dem Hintern spürte. Die Fenster waren oft schmutzig oder, wie in diesem Fall, milchig. |

| Which is a bit sad, if you have a window seat & the landscape below is so nice. I tried my best, but the sunlight & the milky glass were not really amiable to making photos. | Was etwas schade ist, da ich einen Fenstersitz hatte & die Landschaft so schön war. Versuchte mein Bestes, aber das Licht & das milchige Glas waren mir nicht wohlgesonnen. |
