Churches of Patras / Kirchen in Patras #3 (Revision)
| Actually, I wanted to write a Sea-Mountain-Sea View with some new pictures of the Church of St. Artemius & the adjacent monastery. There should have been just a backlink to the original post. But when I checked the link I had to notice that probably due to steemit deleting all my posts (or perhaps because @esteemapp [now Ecency] changed their formatting?), all the pictures in the post had disappeared. | Wollte eigentlich einen Meer-Berg-Meer-Blick schreiben, mit ein paar neuen Bildern der Kirche des St. Artemius & des Klosters anbei. Hätte dann nur einen Link zum Originalbeitrag eingefügt. Aber bei Überprüfung des Links fiel mir auf, daß alle Bilder im Beitrag verschwunden waren, vermutlich weil steemit alle meine Beiträge gelöscht hat (oder vielleicht weil Esteem/Ecency die Formatierung geändert hat?). |

| This time I approached from a different direction, so I came across the Holy Monastery of Girokomeion (Moni Girokomiou, Μονή Γηροκομείου) first, although at the time I didn't know what it was. The above shows the monastery from a gate on the far side. Doesn't look like much. But as you can see from the solar panels, the Orthodox church tries to be environmental-friendly. | Diesmal kam ich aus einer anderen Richtung, weshalb ich zunächst am Heiligen Kloster von Girokomeion vorbeikam, obwohl ich zu dem Zeitpunkt nicht wußte, was es war. Oben sieht man das Kloster von einem Seiteneingang aus. Sieht nicht nach viel aus. Aber wie man an den Solarpanelen sieht, bemüht sich die orthodoxe Kirche um Umweltschutz. |

| By now I have been at the monastery 3 or 4 times. Always closed. I thought, it was just my timing, but according to vymaps.com it is permanently closed. So, the only pictures you'll get from me are shot through the gates or above the walls. Above in the background is the actual monastery. To the left is a small building that looks like a chapel, but there should also be a nursing home. | Insgesamt war ich jetzt 3- oder 4-mal an dem Kloster. Immer geschlossen. Dachte, das läge an meinem Timing, aber anscheinend ist es permanent für's Publikum geschlossen. Die einzigen Bilder, die es von mir geben wird, wurden durch die Tore oder über die Mauer fotografiert. Oben ist im Hintergrund das eigentliche Kloster zu sehen. Links steht ein kleines Gebäude, das wie eine Kapelle aussieht, aber da sollte auch ein Pflegeheim sein. |

| Opposite the chapel is the Church of All Saints (Ιερός Ναός Αγίων Πάντων). Not much to see of it, but that is all that I could shoot from the main gate. Near the main gate was this little fountain: | Gegenüber der Kapelle ist die Kirche Allerheiligen. Nicht viel von zu sehen, aber das war alles, was vom Haupttor möglich war. | Since there was not much more to see, I went to the Church of St. Artemius (Εκκλησία Άγιος Αρτέμιος = Ekklisía Ágios Artémios) on the other side of the road. Beside it is a monument for all police fallen in the line of duty. Don't know why I missed it during my first visit. | Da es dort nicht viel mehr zu sehen gab, wandte ich mich der Kirche des St. Artemius (Εκκλησία Άγιος Αρτέμιος = Ekklisía Ágios Artémios) auf der anderen Straßenseite zu. Daneben steht ein Monument für im Dienst gefallene Polizisten. Keine Ahnung, warum mir das beim ersten Besuch nicht aufgefallen war. |

| But I got a better picture of the entrance with the plaque beside it. On it, it says that the church was built in 1989-90. So, at least some more information than before. Although, I'm not sure whether the translation is rather 'restored' than 'built'. Google Translator changed it in the middle of the translation. | Habe aber jetzt ein besseres Bild des Eingangs mit dem Schild daneben. Darauf steht, daß die Kirche 1989-90 gebaut wurde. Also etwas mehr Infos als zuvor. Bin nur nicht sicher, ob sie tatsächlich dann gebaut oder restauriert wurde. Google Translator war da nicht ganz klar. |

| & then I walked up a side road for a bit, so I could take a picture of the backside. Really small church with a nice nested construction. They have to ring the bells by hand, which is rather uncommon nowadays. Also interesting that there is exactly one tomb behind the church. | Danach ging eine Seitenstraße ein Stück hinauf, um ein Foto der Rückseite zu machen. Wirklich kleine Kirche mit einer interessanten Schachtelkonstruktion. Die Kirchenglocken müssen von Hand bedient werden. Auch interessant, daß hinter der Kirche exakt eine Gruft ist. |

| Quite a long time has passed since my last post in this series. I'm just too lazy, I suppose. But yesterday, I cycled into the mountains again (not too high, though, had just eaten & was short of breath) & I came across this little gem: | Hat ziemlich lange gedauert seit meinem letzten Beitrag in dieser Serie. Bin wohl doch zu faul, nehme ich an. Gestern bin jedoch mal wieder bergauf geradelt (wenn auch nicht zu hoch hinaus, da ich gerade gegessen hatte & somit schnell außer Atem war) & kam an diesem kleinen Juwel vorbei: |

| This is the Church of St. Artemius (Εκκλησία Άγιος Αρτέμιος = Ekklisía Ágios Artémios), located in the east of Patras at Likochorou (Λυκοχόρου) 18 in the district of Diakou. | Das ist die Kirche des St. Artemius, die sich im östlichen Patras an der Likochorou (Λυκοχόρου) 18 im Stadtteil Diakou befindet. |

| Sadly, I couldn't find any more useful information about this small church. Don't even know when it was built. What I know, though, is that the saint who gave it its name was not a nice guy. Artemius became a martyr because he was executed, mostly for the persecution of pagans in Egypt. | Leider konnte ich keine weiterführenden Infos über diese kleine Kirche finden. Weiß nicht mal, wann sie gebaut wurde. Was ich allerdings weiß, ist, daß der Heilige, von dem sie ihren Namen hat, nicht unbedingt ein netter Kerl war. Artemius wurde zum Märtyrer, da er hingerichtet wurde, weil er wohl die Ungläubigen in Ägypten verfolgt hatte. |

| Interestingly, this church is just across the road from a very old monastery. It's the Holy Monastery of Girokomeion (Virgin Mary?). | Interessanterweise ist auf der gegenüberliegenden Straßenseite ein ziemlich altes Kloster. Dabei handelt es sich um das Heilige Kloster von Girokomeion (Jungfrau Maria?). |

| This monastery was founded in the 10th century & is also somehow related to St. Artemius. Seems to have something to do with relics which Artemius recovered & brought to Constantinople. Just like the church, the monastery was closed when I was there, so I couldn't take more detailed pictures. | Das Kloster wurde wahrscheinlich im 10. Jahrhundert gegründet & ist auch irgendwie mit St. Artemius verknüpft. Scheint damit zu tun zu haben, daß Artemius einige Reliquien zum Kaiser nach Konstantinopel brachte. Genau wie die Kirche war das Kloster geschlossen, als ich da war, weshalb ich keine weiteren Bilder machen konnte. |

| Maybe I'll go there again in the future. Esp. the monastery is interesting for its age. What's more, before the Christians occupied the area, it must have had quite some significance for traditional Greek religion, since there had been a temple of Artemis, goddess of hunt, wilderness, moon & chastity. | Vielleicht fahre ich in der Zukunft nochmal hin. Vor allem das Kloster ist wegen seines Alters interessant. Außerdem war die Gegend offenbar schon für die alten Griechen wichtig, da sie dort einen Tempel für Artemis, Göttin der Jagd, der Wildnis, des Monds & der Keuschheit, errichtet hatten. |
