A birdy day out / Ein Tag, der vögelte
| Usually the birds here in Patras are rather shy & keep their distance from humans (with the exception of some pidgeons). But one day in December when I was at the coast, for some strange reason a number of birds let me get closer than usual. | Normalerweise sind die Vögel hier in Patras eher scheu & bleiben auf Distanz zu Menschen (mit Tauben als Ausnahme). Aber im Dezember gab es einen Tag an der Küste, an dem aus irgendeinem Grund diverse Vögel mich etwas näher als gewöhnlich ranließen. |

| Closer than usual doesn't mean really close, though. I still needed the 200mm zoom to get some proper pictures. Song thrushes are always at the coast, but they are usually very hard to photograph. As soon as they see you, they are gone. | Näher als gewöhnlich bedeutet natürlich nicht wirklich nah. Brauchte doch noch das 200mm-Zoom, um vernünftige Bilder zu bekommen. Singdrosseln sieht man immer an der Küste, sind aber meist schwer zu fotografieren. Sobald sie einen sehen, sind sie weg. |

| This one was perhaps too busy looking for food. | Diese war vielleicht nur zu sehr mit Futtersuche beschäftigt. |

| Hooded crows are usually at least as careful as song thrushes. But they are bigger & hence a bit easier to shoot. Mostly you see them in couples at the coast, sometimes in small groups. That day, there were several groups & not as shy as normally. | Nebelkrähen sind normalerweise mindestens genauso vorsichtig wie Singdrosseln. Aber sie sind größer & entsprechend leichter zu fotografieren. Meistens sind sie paarweise an der Küste, manchmal in Kleingruppen. Diesmal waren gleich mehrere Gruppen unterwegs & nicht so scheu wie sonst. |

| Strangely enough, that day even the gulls out at sea made it easier for me, although they kept flying. Below is probably a black-headed gull in flight. Black head, you ask? It's the winter plumage. | Seltsamerweise machten es sogar die Möwen einfacher für mich, auch wenn sie in der Luft blieben. Unten sieht man eine Lachmöwe im Flug. |

| This one made a fly-by so I could take several pictures. | Sie flog so an mir vorbei, daß ich gleich mehrere Aufnahmen machen konnte. |

| After that fly-by I turned my attention back towards the crows. They were also looking for food in the grass. | Danach wandte ich mich wieder den Krähen zu, die auch nach Futter im Gras suchten. |

| Perhaps on that day there was some unusual insect or snail activity in the grass & that's why all the birds were less shy than usual. | Vielleicht gab es an dem Tag ungewöhnlich starke Insekten- oder Schneckenaktivität im Gras, & deshalb waren all die Vögel weniger scheu als normal. |

| I didn't notice anything in particular. But feasting on some special snack may divert enough attention from stupid human photographers. | Mir fiel aber nichts dergleichen auf, obwohl es von dummen menschlichen Fotografen könnte, wenn man sich den Bauch vollschlagen kann. |

| The next image is quite interesting. This is the first time (I remember) of catching the moment the nictitating membrane covers the eye. | Das nächste Bild ist recht interessant, weil es das erste Mal war (soweit ich mich entsinne), daß ich den Moment des Nickhauteinsatzes erwischte. |

| That's the 3rd eyelid of birds, used for lubricating the eye. Doesn't seem to happen too often, or else I probably had more photos of it happening. | Dabei handelt es sich um das 3. Augenlid der Vögel, die es zur Befeuchtung des Auges nutzen. Scheint nicht allzuoft zu passieren, sonst hätte ich es wohl häufiger auf Bild gebannt. |

| Finally, there was one crow which had found something edible. Doesn't look very appetising, though. | Endlich hatte eine Krähe etwas Essbares gefunden. Sieht allerdings nicht sehr appetitlich aus. |

| Greenfinches were out in force, too. They stayed in the grass & hence I have only a few proper pictures. | Es waren auch eine Menge Grünfinken unterwegs. Sie blieben aber im Gras & deswegen konnte ich kaum gute Bilder machen. |

| Much less common & much shier than greenfinches are Sardinian warblers. You see them once in a while, but they usually stay in between the branches of trees when I'm around. | Wesentlich seltener & scheuer als Grünfinken sind Samtkopf-Grasmücken. Man sieht sie ab & zu, aber sie bleiben meist zwischen Baumzweigen versteckt, wenn ich in der Nähe bin. |

| So, I was lucky to get the one above largely out in the open. Unluckily it was too far away even with the tele zoom. Still recognisable, though. & below, last not least, another greenfinch. This one also got lucky & found something to eat. | Hatte also Glück, daß eine sich mal an die Öffentlichkeit wagte. Nur Pech, daß sie sogar für das Telezoom zu weit entfernt war. Immerhin erkennbar. & unten ist dann schlußendlich noch ein Grünfink. Dieser hatte auch Glück & etwas zu futtern gefunden. |
