PHC Top 3 Extraterrestrial Movies {Out of this World since 1982...😉}

PHC Top 3 - Blog Header Image.png

After a crazy few days, both on Steem and off, it's time to get back to reality! Or perhaps I can keep my head in the clouds (and beyond) for just a bit longer? Yes, sounds like a good plan to me. I'm sure like everyone else I have a backlog of posts I'd like to share, but I'm jumping back in with a fun one for our @phctop3 theme of the month...

This months topic is EXTRATERRESTRIAL MOVIES

As usual, the panel's nominations are null for the actual poll and prizes, but it is always a blast to throw out our own choices! Especially since Steem went down right after we put out our monthly contest post, so hopefully if you missed it this will help encourage you to join in with your own entry. We don't want anyone to miss out on what is sure to be another fantastic round of top 3 picks!

My Nominations are:

Nomination Number One

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

My Reasons for the Nomination

I'm bringing it back to the 80's for each of my choices this round. Of course I had to pick E.T. since we were both "born" in 1982. Besides coming out the year I entered the world, this one is just a classic. It's got action, adventure, heart, suspense and also brings up some morality issues that make you think a bit, as well. It doesn't hurt that E.T. likes one of my childhood favorite candies, either. Remember which one? ;)

Nomination Number Two

Cocoon

My Reasons for the Nomination

Though I'm not on the hunt for the fountain of youth myself, for some reason I just like this movie. Perhaps it brings back memories of spending time with my own beloved grandparents. I adore Jessica Tandy, as well, and the rest of the cast is packed with brilliant actors. This one hits me in the feels many times throughout the movie, but also has enough of the mystery of what's beyond our own world to keep it interesting.

Nomination Number Three

Little Shop of Horrors

My Reasons for the Nomination

This one might not be an obvious choice, but technically Audrey II is from outer space. ;) Music, comedy, horror--this one is quite the quirky mix, but my sisters and I have a special place in our collective memory for this one. This one also features a great cast with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin. There's also appearances by Jim Belushi, John Candy and Billy Murray! It was originally a movie in the 1960's, then became an off-Broadway musical before the 1986 film that I am familiar with. Definitely a fun one if you enjoy cult classics!

We hope to see plenty of great entries from you all once again!

Oooh, those are some good ones. I was thinking more recent and I probably would have missed your first two gems. I think there are too many that I wouldn't be able to stuff it all into three nominations.

I would love to see your choices! You should still do an entry to join us. You can always pick your top 3, but then talk about some extra favorites in your post intro or at the end. We've had people do that before and it's always fun to see the ones that make the extended short list. ;)

I just might do that. Thanks for the tip!

Wow what a trip down memory lane.

I swear I was just thinking about Cocoon this week after many years. What an awesome feelgood movie with cool sci-fi theme.

Total nostalgia in this one. :) Probably not the typical Sci-Fi route that some will go, but still fit the criteria, haha. Are we going to see a Zeke's Top 3 one of these rounds?

I especially like the first two on your list. What kid from the 1980s/ ( and possibly 70s ) doesn’t like that movie? I watched it many times, around Christmas.

I must have Cocoon a handful of times too. It was a very special and intriguing movie for me, as a kid. Nostalgia now.

I was born in 1981 and - having studied film and being somewhat of a fan of scifi - I can’t pass on the opportunity to come up with my top 3. It’s gonna be tough though... there’s so many to choose from

👋🏼 :>)

Yay! I will look forward to seeing your choices! I think we are going to extend the entry period a bit since Steem was down, so you've got at least a week to come up with your list. :)

Glad you enjoyed my picks! The top 2 I immediately thought of when we decided on the theme, but took a while to nail down my third. There were a few others that almost made the cut.

Tons of others! Especially since you don't have to stick with the 80's like I did, haha. ;)

You know i have never seen LSOH, as bizarre as that might be.

I loved the more recent Arrival, the sound track was beautiful. Wierd, but awesome

LSOH is a fun one. I don't always go for musicals, but put "horror" in the name and I'm there (love Rocky Horror, too). Arrival was a good one. The boyfriend loves anything Sci-Fi usually, so we end up watching pretty much anything in that genre (especially with aliens).

E.t phone hooome. Hooooome. I she to say I think that movie creeped me out when I was a kid. Strange looking alien but hey if you look at what I picked, I like the strange now lol. Guess I have ET to thank for that lol.

Can't go wrong with the 80s P2P!

ET has legendary status in our house. We are all fighting over who is going to have it! I think Jayne is winning that battle. ET was my first really understanding of US culture. Ordering a pizza and having it delivered was mind blowing for us Brits at the time. Hell, eating pizza was something new! Then you throw in BMX's and the terrain and all the houses with huge space around them. I loved the movie but that alone blew my mind and left a lasting mark on me.

Cocoon is awesome too. I watch it every now and then when I'm feeling nostalgic. A lovely story with a happy end. Steve Guttenberg was the man!

Little Shop was very quirky and out of my comfort zone way back in my pre teens. It freaked me out a little but there was something cool about it too.

Great choices P2P.

You know, I didn't even think about E.T. like that, but it totally makes sense! It really epitomizes some of the pop culture at the time. Probably why it is so nostalgic for me.

The whole cast of Cocoon is just great! One I can watch over and over.

I haven't watched LSOH in a long time, but the songs can bring it all right back! Fun to bring in something quirky to the mix. Fits the theme well. ;)

Of your 3, I've only seen Cocoon, and I thought it was good. I remember not having interest in ET because of the extraterrestrial being a cute, funny and adorable cartoonish thing. The same reason I didn't care for the "Alf" TV show, which came a little while after ET. The Little Shop of Horrors, I didn't see either, but I don't have a reason why I skipped on it.

I can definitely see why ET might not have interested you in that regard. We did watch ALF as kids, too, but I think it appealed to us for exactly that reason--it wasn't scary, haha. I can go either way with the aliens. I appreciate the fun and light interpretations, but then can also get into the darker and more serious takes, as well. Always interesting to see what appeals to different people!
