The Best From Out Of Space: My Favorite Extraterrestrial Movies - A PHC Contest

avatar
(Edited)

Hey Jesters

It's competition time, lol I recently came across a post by @simplymike about her selection of favourite extraterrestrial movies and being such a movie-obsessed freak I had to comment. Then @tryskele and @plantstoplanks got on my case to join so here I am.

Space movies are really my thing even if they're not particularly good or average I still tent to enjoy them. Movies like Moon and Passengers, Life and 2001 Space Odessy and even Prometheus are pretty high up there on my list.

However, If I'm forced to pick a top three I would have to go with the following films

Note: Entries were changed to fit the rules of the competition.

1. Arrival

This one is a bit different and takes on the idea of the first contact with beings of higher intelligence beings and how it would affect the way we view, well everything. (@rebeccaryan ties into what you were speaking about my previous posts, if you haven't seen it you should watch this one)

Denis Villeneuve directs this suspenseful masterpiece about Linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) leads an elite team of investigators when gigantic spaceships touch down in 12 locations around the world.

As nations teeter on the verge of global war, Banks and her crew must race against time to find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. Hoping to unravel the mystery, she takes a chance that could threaten her life and quite possibly all of mankind.

While it may seem outlandish now its a social commentary on how we've yet to come together as a species to really push the human race forward. How our ideas of nationalities, cultures and sovereign borders hold us back from achieving so much more.

This movie will leave you with quite a few questions after watching it and have you thinking what if we're not alone and how insignificant a part we play in the galaxy, while we focus on local issues and infighting on earth.

2. Signs

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan and is still one of the most iconic, scary and meme-able space movies around, is signs.

The movie revolves around farmer Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) whose assumptions about the world is changed when he discovers a message - an intricate pattern of circles and lines - carved into his crops.

As he investigates the unfolding mystery, what he finds will forever alter the lives of his brother (Joaquin Phoenix) and children (Rory Culkin), (Abigail Breslin).

A unique story that explores the mysterious real-life phenomena of crop signs and the effects they have on one man and his family.

The movie is an intense watch and suspenseful thriller that will have more than a few jumps scares along the way. Its the oldest movie on my list and if you've seen it you'll know why it lives so long in the memory.

3. Life

Astronauts (Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds) are aboard the International Space Station on the verge of the cutting edge having discovered the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As members of the crew conduct their research, the rapidly evolving life-form known as "Calvin" proves far more intelligent and terrifying than anyone could have imagined.

The movie drives home an important point, that our understanding of intelligent life is still very basic and our preconceived notions of what it should be like limit us. We also do not respect life that doesn't take on forms we believe in and how that could be our downfall should we begin to explore the galaxy.

The movie directed by Daniel Espinosa is somewhat of a variant of other Alien movies we've seen in the past but it's still entertaining. The movie has some stunning visuals and CGI and offers grungy horror take on the series.

There you have it guys, my top 3, I hope you liked them. If you've seen any of these movies let me know which one was your favourite in the comments below.

If you're keen to join you can find the original contest post here. Entries close on the 11th September so there's still time for you to place a submission :P

So these were the entries that didn't qualify but I'm keeping them in the post simply because it was heaps of text and I wasn't going to let it go to waste. It also gives the comments a lot more context lol

1. Interstellar (Disqualified Entry - Honourable mention)

Hands down without a doubt my favourite space travel movie of all time and a masterpiece by Christopher Nolan.

The story centres around a not too distant future and pretty believable premise where w now live in a world with a global crop blight. This slowly renders the planet uninhabitable and the smartest minds on the planet are looking for any and every solution.

Professor Brand (Michael Caine), a brilliant NASA physicist, is working on plans to save mankind by transporting Earth's population to a new home via a wormhole.

But first, Brand must send former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers through the wormhole and across the galaxy to find out which of three planets could be mankind's new home.

The film is one epic adrenaline thrill ride with action, suspense and for a space movie is pretty grounded until the end which I won't spoil for you.

The visuals are simply epic and you sort of feel like you're along for the ride. Also, I have to mention the score by Hans Zimmerman, which really sets the tone and brings the movie an added dynamic of intensity.

It's a movie I'll never forget and happy to rewatch it a few more times.

2. The Martian (Disqualified Entry - Honourable mention)

Coming from a director that loves his space adventures Ridley Scott takes on the task of bringing the book ot the big screen. When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm.

With only a few supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crewmates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission.

Another one pretty grounded in reality except for the conditions on Mars, while they are pretty harsh in the movie it's not as bad as we're currently lead to believe from studies. Matt Damon puts in an amazing performance since most of the movie is with him and his personal dialogue.

His portrayal of the character really gets to you and sells you on the story of being the only one on a planet with only yourself to rely on for survival.

The movie has action, suspense and surprisingly a lot of comedic relief too, but balances it well and I highly recommend checking it out. While the final scenes of the rescue mission seem highly impossible, it is still highly entertaining and worth the watch.

I only saw the first of these movies, thanks for the suggestion!

Do I need to be part of the Power House Creatives in order to submit an entry myself?

I don't think so, I was invited from one of the submission posts and by the looks of it, they keen on more entries. So Knock one out, tag me in it so I don't miss it

I'll pass on this, after all. While I like Power House Creatives initiatives, I find their contests and initiatives too complex, with way too many rules. I have enough rules in my life already. When I log onto Steem, I want to have fun and not spend my time following a million different little rules and guidelines. 😣

That was also the reason why I never joined their little tribe a few months back.

There are too many tribes already, we don't need any more! 😂
Speaking of which, do you know there is a Portuguese Speaking Tribe now, and will launch a token for all Portuguese Speakers around the world?

No I didn't know that, but I think its only going to get bigger and more decentralised as SMT's and Communities are launched on the mainnet

Alright. I'll think about it... I haven't seen any alien movies lately. I'll try to recall my favourites.

2001: A Space Odyssey is still the best I've seen. They had it in my local cinema a few years ago and its much better on the big screen. Stanley Kubrick made some great films.

I couldn't get into this movie the first time I watched it and then a geek friend raved about it so I gave it another shot and really enjoyed it. Need to watch it soon again to refresh the memory

Technically yes, but since this is space-time things I'm going to assume that there is a universe in which you have seen it and we're just a fork of when you didn't until you fork into the universe where you did.

So have you? Because holding on to these two timelines is more than I can stand 🤪

Haha, gotta love a little peer pressure! ;) At least it is all in good fun in this case. The more the merrier we think, and we especially love getting new folks to join in with us each month!

These are definitely some great selections! Epic movies all in their own right. Though it has been a while since I have seen the first two, are there technically any extraterrestrials in them? Excellent space movies, but we were specifically going for alien movies this round to narrow down such a wide topic and make sure everyone was in the same playing field and had the same chances of winning when it comes to the dpoll! :)

Lol a little peer pressure can be a good thing when the group acts in the interest of the individual and not in the interest themselves

In Interstellar technically the higher life forms that gave him access to travel and communication between space and time would be the extraterrestrials, but they were more of a plot device than a focal point of the movie.

As for the Martian if I were to put on my marketing spin doctor hate I would say that its the story of an extraterrestrial (earthling) living on another planet :P

Hey @chekohler

Great to have you join us this month.

There have been a few others that have had to alter their nominations because of the criteria, so we will have to insist on the same, unfortunately.

The criteria is:

The movie does not have to be completely alien-themed, but must feature at least one extra terrestrial character or being from outer-space.

We didn't want to call this month's topic 'Alien Movies' because of the direct connection to the Alien saga.

If you could give us two more movies with the ET/Alien in it, that would be great.

Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for these awesome suggestions for our contest this month! We've given you an upvote and logged your nominations, ready for the dpoll - keep an eye on our blog for the dpoll post!

Set your post payout to 50/50. You keep the SP and then transfer the STEEM and/or SBD (whichever is paid out at the time) to @phctop3 with a link to your blog post entry in the transfer memo. This is the minimum entry fee, but you can add as much as you like to it! The more you add, the more you can win. There is no maximum entry fee.

Not sure how to find your post payout? Look in your Steem Wallet under Author Rewards to find the exact payout for your post. In the example below you would send the 0.014 SBD and 6.587 STEEM over to the @phctop3 account as your entry fee. We’ll take it from there and convert all of the prize pool to SBD for easy prize distribution at the end of the month!

Yeaaaa buddy! Thanks a lot for entering the contest and those are some pretty awesome films! I remember watching Interstellar for the first time on a plane as I was on my first travel bout a few years ago, great film and can't help but feel I missed out watching it on the big screen rather than a pitiful airplane screen which was almost touching my nose because that's the way cattle class seats work haha!

I'm going to have to settle in to the Martian and Arrival as well as I've not come across those films before but I'm not a movie buff. In fact, I only watch films when I go on long haul flights it seems!!

Good luck in the contest too!

So are you more of a reader? If so any books you’d recommend!

You’re a braver man than me, I can’t seem to get myself to watch a movie on cattle class long haul flights it’s so damn painful I can’t distract myself from it so I try to get in some of that half half terrible sleep

I would recommend you get yourself a nice big screen and enjoy all 3 movies they are all well with rewatching a few times

I have read a few books but none that were turned into movies as the ones I read are more about self development than works of fiction so can't help I'm afraid 😔

Haha I can really relate to the 1/8 quality sleep, I do try to completely exhaust myself by staying up all night the night before or picking a night flight to give me a fighting chance. Managed to "sleep" most of the way to Australia which was great, highly recommend those foam travel pillows, they are genius!
