Trinket Gift Box

Happy New Year everyone! I understand that this belongs to "Christmas" but in a way, I love trinket boxes. So I made this for me.

For anyone who is curious, I am using an air clay. This is not a special type of air clay- I actually got it from K-mart near where I live- $ 5 for 6 tubs( red, white, purple, blue, black and yellow). I am not doing this professionally. This is just my hobby because, there are simply too much going on in my life that I needed a healthy outlet for all my frustrations. This works!

I started with this- a purple clay, rolled out and now, its in the process of being cut.

Roll out another piece of clay. Cut.

I am not going to "prescribe" on the length and height of your cut because, its up to you to determine that- if you wanted it to be a bigger box, the height should be "taller" and, do the opposite if not. Do not get obsessed if the clay is enough to surround the entire "circle." If its not, just roll out another batch and blend in. Or do what I did: I did not blend it in because, I just love the "hand made" vibe.

When you're done, you'll have something that looks like this:

Set aside.

For the cover, we start with a purple clay. Cut it with the same cookie cutter used previously. Also, roll out a clay.

Start doing this.

20200102_163824.jpg

Doing this will ensure that your cover is slightly "bigger" than the body of the box. It will also create a snug fit when you put the two pieces together. At this point, do not do that because they might adhere together. Wait for them to dry out!

Roll out another clay. Flatten it out. This piece must be smaller compared to the first one used to make the "body."

Instead of attaching it at the sides, directly attach the flattened clay on top.

You'll have something that looks like these:

20200103_073527.jpg

Let these dry completely. Again, it depends on the weather or temperature of the room. For me here, it took about an hour.

Let's start decorating it.

20200103_074021.jpg

Before doing the next part, I always consult the color wheel and look out the color complement. If you do not know how to do that just type: purple color complement in any search engine and it will give you: yellow.

The easier way of making this is to put the box together and start attaching the flattened clay at the top.

20200103_074139.jpg

Cut at the edge of the lid. Then continue on the same area on the body.

20200103_075041.jpg

I am not going to claim that this is another "rustic" effect of mine. I simply screwed up because I am paying more attention to the movie I am watching! This is the bottom view of the box and, it will give the illusion that the yellow clay are a part of a ribbon.

20200103_075036.jpg

Top view.

20200103_075046.jpg

For the ribbon part, I started with a rolled out clay and, I cut it equally.

20200103_084224.jpg

I just flattened it out with my finger and I did this:

Attach the pieces together. On this part, you can do this on top of the lid. But, I strongly recommend doing it on another surface in case you make any mistakes. The moment you attach these on the lid, its very complicated to detach it again because some of the clay would often adhere on the lid.

20200103_085022.jpg

20200103_085252.jpg

Get a tiny bit of yellow clay and attach it on the lid (where you wanted the "ribbon" to sit). This will serve as glue.

20200103_085323.jpg

20200103_085356.jpg

Get another piece of clay. I did not consult the color wheel for the color complement. I want it to stand out as another component just like in the real world.

Cut it until you have something that looks like this:

20200103_090204.jpg

20200103_090208.jpg

Roll out a red clay and start attaching around the edges:

20200103_090411.jpg

You can use any tool to create the detail. For me, I just used this clay tool because I want the red clay to adhere to the white one and, also to create a bit of a detail.

20200103_090540.jpg

Roll out a tiny yellow clay and pass it in the hole to make it look like an "attachment" to the ribbon.

20200103_090753.jpg

20200103_090939.jpg

You can add a name/ detail on the label. Wait for it to dry out and, you can do it with a marker or anything that writes or adheres to clay to personalize it. I left mine blank.

Another look:
