The Loincloth Visitor

I'll never forget the church service that I attended and downtown Eriex Pennsylvania so many years ago when the current church that I was attending was relatively new. We were situated in a depressed area downtown and the goal of the church was to reach out to. lower Erie with the gospel message.

We had moved from a store front several blocks East and purchased a bar / bowling alley.

The church was built by adding many Sunday school rooms we but the church decided to retain a couple of bowling lanes and they was used for youth group and family nights.

Our church was a small tightly-knit Church and everyone had a mind to do the Lord's work. Part of the Lord's work meant accepting people who walked in the door as they were. The church was a fundamental Baptist Church and according to the standards of many churches it was strict on dress code and tried to follow the teachings of the Word. The women were to dress modestly Etc.

One night during the preaching a man came through the doors wearing nothing but a loin cloth.
The man was definitely inappropriately dressed both for the sermon and for the weather.

The preacher stopped the sermon to welcome the gentleman but ask him kindly to come back with some more modest clothing on.

I don't recall if that man ever came back, but I do remember that there was quite a stir amongst the congregation with this visitor.

Downtown Erie has many very poor, mentally ill, and homeless people that would wander in regularly. The pastor would minister to them as best as he was able and try to give them help when they were willing to receive it.

I will always remember how tactfully the pastor addressed that gentleman buy both welcoming him and asking him to please come back with more clothes on. I really hope that he did.
