Weather in Oklahoma is never boring, last Sunday it was 74 degrees, today we got 5 inches of snow!

avatar

This is a good place to live, but the weather is changeable.

If you don't like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute and it will change.

Will Rogers

Last week was outside work, in fact my AC unit started on Sunday. It was stunning and was shirtsleeve weather. I actually installed a new TV antenna that was waiting on good weather.

Tosay, we have snow. But, my car enjoyed it; because it gets a break when it snows!

The neighborhood was pretty quiet today too....

20200205_143225.jpg![20200205_143227.jpg]

This snow wasn't blowing, but came down straight; and stuck to my tree.

20200205_143157.jpg

But the mail was still running...with bills, SMH!

20200205_191508.jpg

This was the third snow, but the only real accumulation thus winter. The last one just left a little on the car hood.

20200122_142428.jpg

This snow will be gone by Friday, and I will be out on the homestead again Sunday with my chainsaw, to clear some downed limbs on some oak trees there. It is supposed to be 65 degrees F on Sunday. It is never boring here, LOL!

You are gaining in Rep number, and no longer hidden! I follow a very strict Bible based Diet, no chance of me eating a rabbit. I eat Kosher, and worship on Sabbath as an Adventist, but thank you anyway.

This is familiar ground for me, and i agree it is unclean food.

I keep saying, "the new ice age is coming." I figure if I say it enough, and it does come, I'll have bragging rights! Lol.

Yep, and don't you think I won't gloat when it arrives...Ah yes, I can see that smug look on my face already..."I told y'all the ice age was on the way,". 🤣

It's going to be epic.

Haha...Sounds good! I mean I couldn't get the weather any more wrong than the current experts could I?

That would be a good job. You could be wrong over half the time, and still keep your job!

I know, it's sort of crazy really...Obviously it's the same there as it is here.

We kind of sit in the center of the country, so whatever weather others get eventually meets here, so it gets crazy here sometimes!

You get those crazy twisters?

Sometimes, but not often. I have taken my Wife down into the hidey hole (storm Cellar) twice in 42 years of marriage. I have chased a few, but she doesn't like that too much.

It must be frightening. I've seen it in TV of course, a few doco's (documentaries) on rhem...Scary. we get cyclones here in Aus, really bad ones, but only in the northern parts of the country and on the coast, not in land.

I think yours are from the warm southerlies hitting the cold northerlies or something like that right? The winds collide and cause storm cells?

So...What happens in the hidey hole stays in the hidey hole right? Lol.

Not too bad, they are very rare here.

We watch TV, and play board games, in the hidey hole. I also listen to two meters (146.94 Mhz FM)for storm spotting reports.

Yes Texas blows, and Kansas sucks...tornadoes on the hoof, LOL! Your Cyclones are the same thing.

I don't like extreme wind weather events. I went through a CAT 3 cyclone up in Townsville. Was frightening.

It is VERY unusual, but Moore Oklahoma was hit twice, by a Cat 5 tornado in a decade!

I have worked the EOC (Emergency Op Center) on the HAM radio section for several storms.

One of our spotters was on a street that was showing a tornado on Radar, but saw nothing. The next morning we found that the tornado was just across the street, tearing up the businesses there. They still call him 'dead eye'...LOL!

What a clown. His name wasn't Richard was it?

Dead Eye Dick has a certain ring to it. Lol.

Those twisters are no laughing matter though I guess. The devastation is incredible.

When it happens, it is less damaging than an earthquake. When we move, I will have to build a "roll in" storm shelter for my sweetie!

I don't think he cares for dead eye too much, LOL! No his name is not Richard...too bad that would be better!

When they do happen, it is ugly. We get a lot of practice at storm clean up. The last time it was floods.

:'(

Yeah, you gotta put a ramp in I guess, set it up for her. How long roughly would you be down there? Is it only for an hour or so or an extended period?

Cleaning up would suck knowing it may have to be done again, and again, maybe in the same season I guess.

I plan to make it above ground with reinforced cement walls that will be buried for protection.

I plan short term, unless the liberals start something bad.

The last major clean up was flooding.

Flooding can be terrible to clean up...So messy.

That shelter sounds cool. I assume you mean that you'll cover the concrete walls like a mound right? That should keep things pretty safe. I'd like a bunker myself, something small, maybe say, 8-10 shipping containers burried and all connected... Etc etc. 😂

(Edited)

I plan to build with cinder blocks; then drop in rebar in the holes, then pour them full. On a slab of course, with a beam supported corrugated steel roof, covered with reinforced concrete.

Then I'll berm it.

Only eight, LOL?

That sounds cool. That's how they build houses in the far north of Autralia. Not always but a lot of them
In the cyclone areas. They don't add the berms though.

Should be nice and sturdy, and at ground level easy to roll a wheel chair into. What sort of size do you reckon?

8 not enough? Better make it 12! 🤣

The berms are added for energy efficiency. I will build a neighborhood shelter, maybe 15' by 20'. I will use it as a root cellar too. I will split it in half so she will be separate.

Nice. Large enough for supplies and a few people.

That is the plan! I will make some RV parking spots, on the south side of the property, while I will live on the north end. They will be able to use the shelter too.

That way the land pays For itself!

That's a good plan. Some do that here also although mostly insurance get's in the way and they end up stopping. I hope it's different up there.

Insurance is a part of this plan, but not too horrible. Not much supplied by me, just a spot to park. I will provide power, and sewer with water.

That should be easy then. It's more the public liability I guess. I don't know about there but here even a private house (mine for example) needs $20 million public liability insurance. It's provided as an addition to general building insurance.

0

What is it for? I have never heard of it. TWENTY MILLION...for a house? I have more than is normal here, and mine is one million because I bought extra....

:'(

Ah ok...It covers people coming to the house. Say a tradie (electrician) comes here and trips on the front step and breaks his neck...I get sued. With public liability insurance I'm covered to the amount of $20m. A roofer falls off the roof, friend slips on the path etc.

We all have it as part of our house insurance policy. I'm surprised you guys don't.

If you're interested here's one of the insurers from South Australia...The snap above is from their website...

Here the roofers etc. are required to carry liability insurance on their business. If they fall (unless I push them) it is on them, NOT me. If you hire a professional, they should be professional!

I do all my own work, including Wiring, Plumbing, and Roofing. I plan on adding a metal roof over top of the existing roof on the new homestaad, to gain more floor space.

It seems like any time I rely on others, I get sub standard work.

:'(

The tradies here have to have the same...It's weird how it works, but I guess someone loves it...means more revenue. Damned insurers.

Sounds like someone's brother in law sells insurance...bunch of thieves!

But I won't have to do this here, just a sane level of insurance. Most of the risk problems are inside the RVs, and not my problem.

There is a volunteer fire department a half mile from the house, so that should help.

:)>

Yeah, insurance is a bit of a rip off for sure. But in this litigious world is a necessary evil. Sounds like you're on top of it though.

Sadly insurance is a necessary Evil these days! The Liability on a parking spot is small though, so it should work well.

I will run well water, since Lake Keystone is a half a mile away. I will see how much power I can make, but it won't be enough to run half a dozen RVs. There is on grid power there, I just hate to use it.

:'(

Yeah, insurance is important but I think you have your head around your situation. The power might be a different situation though. Can you make it switch over to grid power automatically if required or is it a manual switch?

There I actually have it, I am a EE; so I can build anything I want, LOL!

I bought parts for an auto cutover. If I do the RV's, I will need a lot more toys! Something to consider....
