What’s Your Steem Elevator Pitch? Mine Apparently Sucks.

When we were visiting my son in the hospital the other night, the staff scooted us out of the room to do the mysterious things that hospital staff do with curtains drawn. Went to sit in some chairs in the hall and our conversation wandered away from the health crisis to other matters. My wife mentioned that I was planning on going to Steemfest4.

Blank stares from my brother and niece.

So I launched into a 15-minute discussion of cryptocurrencies, decentralization, frictionless 3-second transactions, hard forks, Smart Media tokens, Witnesses, delegation, yadda yadda yadda.

I think I lost them after about two minutes. They concluded that for payments, it might be a slightly better version of PayPal.

Obviously, my Steem-explanation skills are sorely lacking. Do any of you have a good Steem elevator pitch to share?

Minor update about my son: yesterday’s surgery went well. He is scheduled to be transferred out of the Intensive Care Unit this afternoon. I have not been able to see him yet today because my car’s in the shop for a neglected oil change and brake job. But a friend who just got there texted to say that Nate’s significantly less groggy than yesterday and has even initiated some talking rather than only speaking when spoken to. Planning on driving to the hospital after my wife gets off work.

Steemfest4 attendance has gone from being an almost definite yes to being an unknown. No idea yet how much therapy and rehabilitation my son will need. Might he move in with us and need full-time care? So many unknowns at this time.

But I do know that my elevator pitch is awful. Your elevator pitch is almost certainly better than mine. Please share it in the comments below.

I really don’t know how to explain Steem any better..
I get the same results you get with my son’s....

I spent the weekend with my youngest and his wife, had a wonderful time, but if I start to talk about Steem or try to make a post I see that glazed look....🙃
Glad for the update on your son 👍👍👍

I'm glad to hear your son's condition is improving!

It really difficult to pitch Steemit to someone who doesn't have any background knowledge in cryptocurrency. I've tried and failed on countless occasions. What I've had the best luck with is to explain Steemit (the platform) only. My basic pitch has evolved to this...

"Steemit is a social media platform that allows you to do almost everything you do on Facebook only they don't sell your private information and you get paid when someone "likes" your post."

The first question is usually, "How do you get paid?"

Then I say, "You get paid in cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin."

That usually hooks them.

Our thoughts are with you guys!

I focus more on the censhorship resistant nature of the social experience tied with being able to leverage and be rewarded for our attention which allows centralized networks and organizations to make billions of dollars!

The internet is a desert, we're all nomads and each website is a tent.
Some are huge and elaborate, some are pretty basic. They look very impressive, but you can never be sure they'll still be in the same spot when you visit next, and unless you really trust the owner, you wouldn't keep anything valuable in one.
It's all we've ever known, so its hard to imagine anything better.
Steem is a huge, flat concrete slab, with a heap of guys boring holes in it, putting up big, steel girders and arguing over blueprints.
From a distance, and with no knowledge of cities, it doesn't look impressive.
Even the few single story buildings that have gone up are kind of underwhelming, and don't attract many visitors.
Real estate on the slab is cheap, but then nobody in the tribe has ever bought or sold land before.
Most people agree it seems pretty stupid, considering the endless miles of uncontested land in every direction.
Its hard to grasp the value of concepts like plumbing, electricity, lockable doors, floor safes etc without having lived it, but those who can imagine the possibilities are learning, building, starting businesses, building reputations, getting to know their neighbours, and desperately trying to share their vision with others.
