汝窯: the rarest pottery
So this perfect bowl is about a 1000 years old. It is made from an extremely rare pottery from the Chinese Song dynasty called 汝窯 or in English Ru-ware. This type of pottery was mainly made for the Imperial Court. Currently, only 79 known historical pieces exist made from this material! Which perhaps makes it one of the rarest historical materials! The items are mostly of an extremely simple design. The one in the photo is located in the pottery museum in the Dutch city of Leeuwarden. I went there for a short visit on Friday. This bowl was used for cleaning calligraphy brushes. The color of the grey-greenish glaze which is reminiscent of a light Jade-color is poetically referred to as heaven after rainfall. The fine cracks, which are characteristic of Ru-ware, make it indeed seem like the breaking of clouds after rain has been embedded in the material.

Chinese pottery from the Song Dynasty--believe or not, that means something to me. I actually wrote a small book once (never sold a copy but learned a lot) about literati art in the Yuan Dynasty. Before I wrote that book, had no idea what Song, Ming and Yuan meant. Now I do. And I can place your bowl in context. Pretty amazing the bowl survived. Think of the hands it must have passed through. And it looks great. Thanks for sharing.
