What Is Happening To Glenn Greenwald?

The recent charges against Glenn Greenwald have been referred to as an absolute red alert, and that they reek of authoritarianism.

Greenwald has previously been a vocal critic against the current far-right president of Brazil and the recent charges against him, legal and journalist experts argue, are a threat to press everywhere, much like the attacks that took place against Wikileaks and Assange in the past.

Legal Experts Speak Out

In defense of Greenwald, a number of lawmakers and other public figures etc, have spoken out in support, after Brazilian prosecutors filed criminal complaints against Greenwald with his reporting that allegedly help expose corruption in public office in the country.

Many agree that no journalist like Assange or Greenwald should face punishment for reporting on the truth and for sharing that truth with the public. These are detrimental facts about corruption that the public need to be informed about. But the media continues to aggressively portray those who are acting within the interest of the public, as enemies to be locked away and silenced, and their efforts can be convincing. So far, many media outlets have been in support of Greenwald on this.

Greenwald, being the constitutional lawyer that he is, you would assume is educated enough on the law to know how to go about doing his job in a manner that doesn't threaten his liberty, and he has insisted that he acted within his rights on this and has denounced the charges.

“The Bolsonaro government has repeatedly made it clear that it does not believe in basic press freedoms,... Today’s announcement that a criminal complaint has been filed against Intercept co-founding editor Glenn Greenwald is the latest example of journalists facing serious threats in Brazil.” - Rodrigo Brandão, Director of Communications at The Intercept.

Greenwald has insisted that he isn't going to be intimidated by tyrannical governments, he will continue to do his job.

"We’re going to defend a free press, not be intimidated by authorities abusing their power. The reporting will continue." - Greenwald
