Materialism and the perception of being “wealthy”

I’m doing alright. I’m hanging in there even with price increases. But when you go to the a ritzy mall and end up feeling like shit, I gotta ask myself; is my perception of wealth being usurped?

Health is wealth, happiness is gold. So why do I feel lesser than what I really am?

Walking into a Ritzy mall which I have avoided for some time makes me know the inevitable feeling in which I knew I would experience. We walk into these places dreaming of a better reality; a reality in which human control can continue to bring us false bliss. I know this world all too well. It's a place where fakeness can be quite frank; fake.

Sure we want to save the whales, keep the rain forest from burning down, and renew our faith in humanity by rallying under the cry of environment materialism. Unfortunately we fail to view saving the world as saving humanity. No please don't take this blog as save the whales. I don't believe it means shit unless we all view our blood as the same; red. We have so many divisions that it's hard to believe we could even contend to 'save the whales'.

I know animals lovers, 3rd world lovers, and money lovers.

Here pictured is my wife standing next to a coat 100 x the amount she paid for a similar type of coat. My wife recently got a 'deal'. She is not cheap and knows good style. But when I was reminded of the ridiculousness I laughed and cried. She got a deal for $90.00 for a jacket that looked almost exactly the same; accept of course the .20 cent logo that didn't accompany. Knowing we had a 'cheaper' version that would effectively equal the amount of warmth made little solace. You see, these coats were more than likely made in similar factories. Leaving the store I could feel almost petty knowing something created in the same type of factory would make me feel weird.

Perception is reality, but the perception of success is also marketing.

I felt bad of myself exiting these places. Are we reduced to logo's? 1% or 99% it just seems so arbitrary. Either of us can throw gold coins into the street looking for bread in a time of famine. No worries as I'll just order up some custom kit-kat chocolate. As long as it's in a fancy mall with fancy people you can sell me a pen.

Can money buy you happiness? No certainly not! It can however buy you sweets.

In the end, I'll feel rich with a coffee. I settled with the most materialistic and proliferated brand. Walking around with that brand made it all better. It still shows the world at it's base.

Rich stores are almost comical, comas on tags where they do not belong. I don't know what it's like looking at a price tag on a jacket with four digits and thinking "that's reasonable."

Or $15 caramel apples... $20,000 rugs... $1500 jackets... Even water is $3 a bottle at a rich store.

I hope these prices never become the norm, if you know what I mean.

I used to be resentful to brands. Now I’m rather indifferent, an attitude which I find to be much healthier and effective in letting others understand why I don’t value brands. I think we are waking up from the dream but it’s not going to be immediate and some companies will fight very hard to keep us sleeping.

I would only go to a shopping mall if there is something specific that I want or need that I can’t find on local shops or that is not really of my liking in local shops. I spent 20 minutes to find 2 dress shirts last week for example. My partner understands although she likes to walk around so I gave her 1 hour of my company but I was singing songs the whole time and doing impressions. That happens once ever 2-3 months

I haven’t bought anything in years. If I need a shirt or socks I buy it for $12 at Walmart.
