Gateways to onboarding

avatar

As you all know, @ocd has been on a curation break lately as it's been focusing on onboarding. It has not been easy but it's starting to flow a little better and the system is being finetuned and with this post I wanted to tell you about another piece of the puzzle which I think is going to help streamline this even better.

IMG_20170624_035344.jpg

When approaching content creators from other platforms, it seems that providing them with links to accounts or in Reddit's case our subreddit is a more "safe" bet than directly linking them to Steemit or sites where they can apply for an account. We now also have Social Media accounts on other platforms and are attempting to grow and get them active by sharing curated posts on a daily basis and having it as a base to direct content creators to them where they will be able to find easy links to create accounts from projects on Steem that offer cheap or free accounts. In OCD's case they will of course be free but we will want some sort of verification from the applicant that he is indeed a content creator or an active, genuine social media user. So as I was going to write a new sticky post for our subreddit www.reddit.com/r/steemit <- subscribe if you haven't, we're up to 8222 users, I thought hey I may as well just post about it at the same time as my work with the subreddit and various other things on Steem is voluntary so if readers want to reward me for it they may do so on my posts like these ones. After all Steem is about rewarding activity, especially if that activity directly or indirectly helps the network and currency. Anyway, without further ado, this is what will exist in the sticky thread and I will need some help from my followers to fill it up with other dapps/projects/etc that create free accounts which we can direct the content creators to.

Welcome to r/steemit, this is a subreddit for discussions about the cryptocurrency Steem, the company Steemit and anything inbetween. The current most active dapps are on the sidebar and for more check out steemdapps.com and other relevant links to better help you understand Steem, Steemit and the difference between the two.

If you are a content creator that stumbled upon this subreddit and want to apply for an account, you can do so by either asking for one here in this thread if you don't mind using your Reddit username for it or through the chat system or direct messages on Reddit to my account, I should be able to get back to you within 8 hours the latest.

You can also apply for an account through Steemit.com, the waiting time should be pretty short right now but if you don't want to risk it then there are other projects and dapps on the Steem blockchain that offer free account creation. One of them being https://steemhunt.com/ and https://actifit.io/.

There are also plenty of users in the subreddit that offer free accounts from time to time, you may get one by just creating a post asking as well!

Feel free to also ask questions about accounts or other Steem related things in this thread as it will be kept sticky for some time forward.

Okay so that's kinda what I got so far, I would like a comprehensive list of communities and projects that offer free account creation to link in the thread and want to keep it as neutral as possible, i.e. I don't just want to "shill" OCD just because I happen to be in charge of the subreddit so I'm looking for all possibilities and I'm hoping I can get some help with that from my readers or anyone else stumbling upon this post.

Does MSP/PAL create accounts? Any other big communities?

Anyway, having said all that I think it will help onboarding new people from Reddit a lot more if we can direct them to the subreddit and say just read the sticky thread there.

Again, if you have a Reddit account or want to create one real quick then subscribe to r/steemit and try check in now and then if anything's happening. We have a weekly sticky thread where people can promote their OC posts and get curated by OCD and then highlighted and shared on the @ocd Reddit compilation posts and we are also working more and more on sharing and bringing in traffic to Steemit and reward you for it in the Sharing is Caring compilation posts.

Feel free to check those out, they really don't take a lot of time and help spread the word about Steem out there!

Thanks for reading, looking forward to your suggestions and opinions on how to formulate the sticky thread better or maybe add something more to it.

Side note, if anyone is looking for FREE accounts and don't have any other options, I'm still making people accounts for free as long as they aren't used for something nefarious and land in the hands of someone that will use them. If they make a good introductory post, I'll even give them a good upvote to get them some resource credits and a little exposure/Steem Power. Here's the link to my post with instructions on how to get a free account. If for some reason I don't get back to you soon, leave me a comment saying you sent the info and I'll get to ya. https://steemit.com/steem/@matt-a/3ne4vz-someone-you-know-needs-a-steem-account-get-them-one-for-free-from-me-free-steem-accounts

Self-upvoting this so it's at the top. I have no shame!!!

Awesome, I was actually thinking of you when I wrote the part about any Steem users in the subreddit often offering account creations. Can I paste that into the sticky as an addition and also add a way for them to contact you through Reddit instead? Then if you take a quick glance at their Reddit history you can judge by yourself if you feel they deserve an account.

Also if you're using steeminvite I can confirm the site never saves any passwords so no need for the changing but you might wanna mention that there is no account recovery function (if they get their keys stolen and changed).

Sure you can add that, I'm coming up close on 400 credits and I want them to get put to use. As for contacting me through reddit, I'm hardly ever on there so that probably wouldn't be good. They can hit me up on the steem channel on telegram though, you can add that part, same username as here.

Thanks for reminding me about steeminvite, that's Pharesim's project right? I need to revisit it, haven't really checked it out since he started building it. If that has been fleshed out some, that would probably make my account creation workload a little lighter/easier and make it easier for the user, too.

Ah yeah, I mentioned it cause it was in your post linked above, yeah it's pharesim's and apparently he's working on a curation project now for HF21 so remember to support him as a witness. ;) but ye steeminvite is great, you can also just create invite links now and send them to people then get a notification on your email when they've chosen the username and you just create an account with your active key. Pretty neat.

But alright, I'll add the telegram link as a way for non-steemians to contact you.

Cool, sounds good! Been voting for Pharesim for a long time now. Actually, I need to re-evaluate my witness voting, it has been a while. Here's what my proxy's voting for right now, let me know if you see anyone that you know off-hand who shouldn't be on there anymore. I've been mentally away from the backend of Steem for a bit:

maybe you don't need it guys, but I am more than happy to do some steeminvite account creation as well. I mean, if you need it. I think @matt-a could quite easily create hundreds of accounts a day :)

I'll help if i can!

Thanks I will refer people to that subreddit for getting free accounts. I do advocate for for people to sign up when talking on reddit threads that deal with the subject of censorship. Good stuff!

Awesome, Steemit.com posts are actually really popular on r/conspiracy which often talk about censorship. Try to share there every now and then, each post has a Reddit share button here on Steemit so it makes it's pretty fast and easy. :)

In fact, I had a good idea for what some people can do to help bring more people here. Every Saturday the Informationwar account is going to make a post and encourage users to sign up for Steemit, those who tweet/facebook/make a youtube video about signing up to steemit will get a small upvote from the informationwar. Our post would be to encourage others to visit places like/r/conspiracy or #censorship on twitter or similar things.

We will direct them to your subreddit for the free account. Hopefully we can get a few people a week at the least!

Where on Steemit reddit should I direct people to sign up for it? I can't seem to find a thread that I should direct them to.

We have a 95% kill rate and approximately 1000 new accounts per week getting in the door already. New and small accounts do not get support from bigger steem fish and so most only last weeks here.

I am begging you to support the people posting and trying here NOW so that we have a vibrant ecosystem in place before trying to get even more people in here. When we kill them with a quick death they run back where they came from and talk bad about steem.

I have brought 20 of my content creating friends in here in 20 years. I tell them how hard it is and to be patient but all left very soon.

The people that manage to get over rep 45 need help. Please focus your efforts there so steem can survive and thrive, @acidyo.

That's what we have been doing with @ocd for a long time. We lack authors now so we have to adapt.

If you are saying you have found the bottom of the talent barrel on STEEM - that is possibly not true.

Off the top of my head, these are places to find starving authors already trying on STEEM:

On the most recent post by @tenkminnows we get:

The original intention of this account was to promote the support of small accounts to try and get to 10,000 minnows (500SP), but the numbers have been falling lately. We are gaining more dolphins (5000SP), but we cannot afford to be losing users.

What he is not saying here is that the minnow number is falling off a cliff. So trying to find random new people to bring to this environment does not seen to be the best move when the ones who have almost made it are dying so fast and hard.

What are your criteria for ocd, acidyo? I have been here 2 years on three blogs and nominated more than once, but not in. How is a person off the street going to be picked up quickly enough to survive here?

I'm surprised I haven't left. I didn't stick with any other social media.

I've had similar luck to you when it comes to people I've brought here.

I have some extra invite tokens I could spare for this.

I think I good way to get people using steem is via actifit, walking groups who already do a shit load of walking could use it as passive fundraising - then hey they may post other things of interest

Great! Can you evaluate your onboarding somehow?

I haven't tried any online onboarding since I'm basically only on Steem.

I have tried to get people on Steem in person however, and have been largely unsuccessful. Usually they express some interest, but I've never had anyone follow through and do a post and so forth after getting their account.

Any tips for onboarding in that context?

I've not used Reddit before, but just signed up now.

Would the subreddit be a useful place to put the Steem News post I produce each day to let more people now what is going on here?

Hmm, that's actually not a bad idea! We usually don't allow steemit posts onto the subreddit cause it got flooded fast by post promo and thus we created a dedicated sitcky thread for it.

Yours would be good to have though, do you think you could post them as Reddit posts and add a link to your steemit post at the end? This way it won't get autodeleted and still serve its purpose and get readers to come over to your post and thank you with a vote.
