Disorderly ordely chaos - lightpainting with sparks and a camera rotation device

(Edited)

A top night out with like minded light painting lunatics down at Padley Gorge again. Straight out of camera, shot in one photographic exposure using a camera rotation tool, custom white balance, a firework and colour gel changes.

For this shot I lined up @fadetoblack on a conveniently located rock and placed a Godox strobe gelled blue:

Then a conveniently located lightpainting buddy, Lee C Wright (not on Steemit) changed the colour gel on the Godox to orange:

Then to put the shot together in one photographic exposure, I first shot the blue silhouette and carefully stumbled my way in the dark and spun a cheap firework on a drill. In this case the firework was a bit faulty and some of the sparks flew off in a random direction, looking somewhat like Tim was taking a piss! After the sparks, I carefully made my way in the dark to replace the lens cap without ending the exposure. Lee changed the colour to orange and I panned the camera across approx 45 degrees and rotated the camera to -45 degrees. I then removed the lens cap, fired the flash and replaced the lens cap. I then rotated the camera to another 45 degree position and repeated the process. In this case there were two colours on the four outer rotated silhouettes. Job done.

I hope I haven't managed to confuse anyone with the process but it's fairly straight forward if you rehearse and work out how each element looks before you go for the shot in one.

Thanks to Lee C Wright for changing the gels stood at the back, to Tim @fadetoblack for standing and not flinching while I spin the firework!

This image was shot with a full frame Sony A7, a Sony Zeiss 16-35mm lens and a camera rotation device. The exposure settings were 476 seconds, f9, ISO 100 and focal length of 35mm.

About me: I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art!

Thanks Sandy, so much easier to achieve when there’s a bit of help to achieve the shot for which I’m always grateful! 😀
