My Top 42 NFL Quarterbacks Entering 2020 - #22 and #21

avatar

Every NFL fan has got their own ideas about what attributes are most important for a good quarterback to have. Do you value football IQ over athleticism? Pocket passing or mobility? Game manager or gunslinger? A great quarterback probably needs to pretty good in all of those areas. I thought it would be fun to share my list of the NFL's top forty-two quarterbacks.

Sports media nowadays is purely out for profit and clicks. It's ridiculous. NFL analysts are so skewed by what gets them the most clicks and the most money that their opinions end up sounding completely absurd.

I'm not about to claim that my rankings are more accurate than other people's. Ranking quarterbacks is not exactly rocket science and there are only so players to pick from anyway. But I will try my best to not be influenced by mainstream media.

I have my complete list already done and I will be spreading out my list throughout a series of posts. I used my own criteria and my own opinions to create my list.

#22 - Jared Goff - Los Angeles Rams

I have a lot of mixed emotions when I think of Jared Goff as a QB.

I remember when he first came into the league in 2016, I kind of thought he sucked. I thought he was going to be a career back-up in the league. He seemed un-athletic, slow, with an underwhelming passing ability. But then again, that was under head coach Jeff Fisher.

The following season in 2017, to my surprsie, Goff improved greatly. Much thanks to having a new, young head coach in Sean McVay.

Since 2017 Goff has accomplished a lot. He's been a pro-bowler twice, led his team to the playoffs twice, and he helped lead his team to a Super Bowl appearance.

Goff is a productive, slightly above average talent in my opinion. He does seem to make up for his physical abilities with a pretty high football IQ. He seems well prepared. I believe he definitely thrives most with a good system and good talent. He seems very good with the play-action pass.

Goff doesn't really seem all that hard to analyze and rank for me. He is a good enough athlete with a good football IQ, probably a high IQ in general. He's also got good size for an NFL QB. He reminds me of an Eli Manning-Tom Brady.

I wouldn't mind building a team around Goff, I expect he will have a solid career going forward. He brings good effort, IQ and character to the locker room. As long as there's some decent pass catchers around, Goff will produce.

#21 - Drew Lock - Denver Broncos

Now Drew Lock is a guy I am very excited about. I think there could be something special about this kid. He was only a rookie who saw limited action in 2019, but I really liked what I saw.

When I fist saw him on draft night in 2019, I thought he looked twelve years old. But after seeing him play a bit I definitely feel like he could be a baby-faced killer in the making.

When I watch him play I just feel like he's got an 'it' factor. He really resembles Aaron Rodgers-Patrick Mahomes-Jay Cutler to me. He has an obviously strong arm. He seems to effortlessly toss the ball down the field. He also has got really good accuracy. The kid's mobility is really good. He's not a scrambler but he's very much in the Aaron Rodgers realm of mobility, maybe a shade more mobile especially since he's young.

This kid seems like a natural.

Buuuuuuuuuut.....

He also only played 5 games in 2019. I definitely have seen many quarterbacks play well in their rookie year, only for defenses to prepare and watch tape in the off-season and then the player struggles in his second year.

Of course, it's only five games and he could just simply be not as good as I think.

But I believe this kid will be at least pretty good if not a top five talent one day.

In his five games he started he went 4-1, threw for 1,000 yards and most notably he absolutely torched the Houston Texans which made me very happy. The score looks much closer than the game really was.

Maybe Lock destroying the Texans makes me biased. Maybe not. The Texans are a good team who won a playoff game last season though too.

But overall I felt confident to make a mildly bold decision and made Lock the #21 QB in the NFL going into the new decade.

The Broncos might be a tough squad next season. the AFC West could be very interesting this year. I know the Broncos added a lot of speed to go along with Lock.
