Lhokseumawe city fishermen and their conditions

Fisherman! Or workers in the marine field, they are there with the aim of catching fish in the vast ocean or in the ocean. Fishermen are one of the occupational professions for the fishing community, in general these people live in fishing village areas. As is the case with one of the villages named Desa Pusong Lama, which is within the authority of the Lhokseumawe City Government of Aceh. The village is inhabited by people who generally work as fishermen and the figure reaches almost 80% while the rest have professions as private employees, government employees and traders.

The village of Pusong Lama Lhokseumawe Aceh has certain groups of fishermen divided into several groups, such as the ones mentioned below:

These four types of professions have different fishing gear in terms of shape, size, distance of operation location, and catches are also different.

1. Offshore fishermen (Langga wooden ship fishermen)

One of the fishermen that is relied on by the offshore fishing community (wooden boat fishermen Langga) is a core fisherman in the Lhokseumawe City area. They have a fishing boat in the form of a wooden boat like the size above in the table column, they have an operational area up to the boundaries of Indonesian sea waters like other neighboring countries. Likewise with the catches obtained by them such as:

• Big Tuna
• Big suree (Ame-ame)
• All fish that play in the vast ocean waters.

While the operating range has several days offshore, in general they are in the high seas for a week and the fish produced also have a high value, usually measuring 5 tons or even up to 15 tons in one week.

These offshore fishermen have transportation equipment that is already sophisticated in their transportation equipment, they have sophisticated engines, such as Mitsubishi with PK 1.5 or 2.0, such as facilitating land vehicles or large truck engines that have been made to turn into wooden ship engines.

The ship wooden of langga, also has two sophisticated machines as mentioned above, while the machines are used as road equipment, for lighting, and everything related to the operation process including trapping fish.

Besides ship wooden has a crew of as many as 30 people, they have their respective duties such as:

• 1 person as the captain of the ship
• 1 person as captain of the ship II
• 1 person as the head of the machine (masines) and two helpers
• 5 people who guard the fish in the ship and when taken when boarding the wooden ship
• 15 people who served as crew members pulled trawls in the water when carrying out operations
• and 5 other crew in charge of controlling everything that is considered important in the process of going to sea.

Local people say this transportation as a Langga ship that has existed in the region of Aceh, especially the city of Lhokseumawe since hereditary, but only different patterns or models of the ship, while the other implementation still relies on traditional tools, such as large trawl with a length of 1200 meters and about 10 meters deep.
