Oil exploration and production operations are not complex enough, but you can imagine their complexity when it is time for some operator to perform offshore maneuvers, logically that offshore operations are more complicated.

Before these operational difficulties and due to the inhospitable nature of these oil locations, there are companies in technology referring to artificial intelligence and robotics such as Aker BP and Cognite that are evaluating the possibility of exploring the study and implementation of robotic systems on offshore platforms, all with the fundamental purpose of making the operations carried out in offshore well drilling safer, more efficient and with a high degree of reliability.

I would like to share with you a video that is not of my authorship, in which you will be able to see the tests that the company Cognite and Aker BP are carrying out to evaluate the possibility of implementing not only robots but also drones that will be able to reach remote locations where operators have difficult access, or otherwise can help minimize operational risks in terms of security.

Source of the video

here are certain parameters within the evaluation of these robots for use in the offshore oil industry, these parameters are:

[1] Independent monitoring: It is important that any element of artificial intelligence or robotics allows for autonomy in the inspections that are commonly carried out on offshore platforms.

[2] Ability to capture high quality data and images: On many occasions it is necessary to corroborate the state or condition of some equipment that is in poor condition, for this reason there are parts where it is difficult for humans to reach, such as tanks, very high places, equipment that is in high-risk sites. It is under this scenario that it is necessary for these robots to be able to capture images, throw data and even generate reports on site of the conditions in which certain equipment is found.

Are there any types of robots that have already been created to meet these objectives?

Of course, even the companies I've named in this post have named some robots that are already being analyzed in this exploratory process.

We have the case of the Spot robot, which is a four-legged robot that has been developed by Boston Dynamics, however currently the companies that are evaluating its mobility, action and possible operation are the companies Cognite and Aker BP.

They have not yet been tested in real environments, since to test their functionality it is best to test them in environments that simulate an environment whose environment is that of offshore oil platforms.

Conclusions and considerations

Oil workers should not feel repressed into thinking that artificial intelligence and robotics can perhaps displace them in today's activities.

The futuristic thinking in the oil industry as far as workers and operators are concerned, is that apart from not feeling displaced, the idea is that they contemplate a mentality of overcoming knowledge, in which they can be ready to learn the operational tools to be able to supervise elements that include robotics and artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence and robotics come to provide safety to the operators and efficiency in optimizing production costs and equipment safety.

Hi @carlos84

Oil workers should not feel repressed into thinking that artificial intelligence and robotics can perhaps displace them in today's activities.

It is possible that this happens, however, not in all cases. I do not believe that we will reach the total dependence of robotics in the oil industry, and the reason is that more and more alternative energy will be undermining that industry.

Artificial intelligence and robotics come to provide safety to the operators and efficiency in optimizing production costs and equipment safety.

It is my opinion. Of course I must recognize that everything that is done in robotics and AI is helpful.

Saludos..

Hello @lanzjoseg.

Well I tell you something that depends on the area where you start to see changes and substitutions, just like you think that in the short term artificial intelligence and robotics do not replace 100% the humans as operators, but if you are seeing certain replacements.

For example, in drilling, which was the department I worked in at PDVSA, you could already see how some drilling rigs were beginning to replace the manual hydraulic wrench for torquing the pipe with a robotic wrench that was only manipulated by the driller by means of remote controls.

I don't think robotics and AI will displace man, I think man will simply have to upgrade, because perhaps the operators will no longer have to measure the volume levels of the tanks, but will have to learn to manipulate the robots, also the computer engineers will play a major role in these changes.

However, my friend, I think that we have to give time to the changes and observe how these changes are adapted to the operational environment in the oil industry. For this reason, I recommend you to be attentive, because I will be publishing more content regarding AI in the oil industry. Greetings and thank you for your positive comments.

The progress of robotics, artificial inefficiency and automation is very interesting, as well as the area of energy production and mining are strategic economic activities in our world today, I have no doubt that investors will be interested in achieving significant advances that give them advantages over their competitors.

Very interesting, although the replacement of workers may be worrisome, however, that is something that has happened in each technological advance, one of the cases I remember is related to the stories of the last century about telephone operators, which were later replaced by the telephone exchange teams that could direct the call directly by using a number assigned to each receiver. Then, telephone service automation eliminated jobs, but people adapted and created new jobs and occupations that did not exist before.

To implement AI, a prior data collection process is necessary.
This immense amount of data is necessary to "teach" AI. Then new storage systems must be implemented that allow the accumulation of immense amounts of information. These systems already exist: deep data, machine learning.

In order to have AI systems applied to the oil industry, all data from that immense number of sensors that exist in drilling and production facilities must be stored and processed.

For example:
A Software with name Knowledge Platform has been developed that helps to make informed decisions, the algorithms of the knowledge platform can interpret data, searching the database of platforms in search of similar patterns. You can also reduce overall costs and optimize operations.

Interesting post Thanks for sharing.

I see us transitioning from categorical enterprise two more creative stuff. One day, a young generation will usher in a combination of robotics and artificial intelligence that we will be able to speak our intent to make happen. After all, we categorize things on written letters as a means of practical management of the times. We have the capacity for so much more today.
