Digital watercolor SELF PORTRAIT By Alejandra Her

When you draw or paint human figures, the self-portrait becomes one of the most efficient expressions of self-knowledge. Frida already said "I paint myself because I am what I know best." And so it is.

At this date, I can draw a sketch of myself without observing the mirror so long. I like to draw self-portraits, although I haven't done them lately. I usually sit in front of a mirror and start drawing, and I always discover something new that the years have left me: Gray hair, a couple of lines on the sides of my nose, a slightly longer face; and always, always, a serious expression. Is there someone who smile when drawing a self-portrait in front of the mirror?

Then I started to try comic style. Character studies about myself forced me to make different expressions, and I used reference photographs for this.

This self-portrait is in a watercolor comic style, I'm just learning it and I hope to perfect it. Understanding that perfecting is not making it more real, but on the contrary, simplifying its lines until reaching the most basic of its essence, and that identity and form are understood.

First, I drew the lines with a brush predetermined in Adobe Prothoshp. I traced the hair in another layer with the same brush, but activating the function of wet edges. Doing it in another layer allowed me to enable and disable this box for convenience.

I proceeded to color the skin with the solid circular brush with the wet edges box activated.

I mixed the edges a little. I painted these colors in the same layer.

I erased the darkest parts with very little intensity eraser. This makes the edges look more intense, as in traditional watercolors,

Finally, I added the background of watercolors splash and I shined my lenses, which characterize me so much.

And here I am, in the photography.

You look cute in both. I can see the resemblance and you even made your hairs longer!👍😄

ha ha! I did. I don't like drawing comics exactly like people. Cause it's a comic, not a photograph. I don't know, is something I prefer.

Thanks for the comment!
