My two new babies

My start in numismatics began long before computers, let alone crypto, when a child. My collecting began with pennies yet eventually branched out to include even paper. My favourite purchase is a precious metal coin that is almost the same collection value as the precious metal it contains. Such coins provide a nice hedge in my opinion. The fact is that if the price of the precious metal outperforms the collectable value that many dealers will melt them down. Of course such a practice only will increase the collectable value over time due to greater scarcity.

Such coins are harder to find yet a good prospect came my way on my last visit to my favourite local shop.

They are from the ninth issue of the Royal Canadian Mint's 1/25 ounce pure gold coin featuring the Bluenose, an historic fishing and racing schooner launched at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on March 26, 1921. In October of that year Bluenose won her first of many International Fishermen's Trophy series of races. Almost immediately, the ship became an important symbol of excellence in ship design, shipbuilding and seamanship for Nova Scotians and, eventually, for all Canadians.

Bluenose went on to serve actively as a fishing vessel. Her designer, William J. Roué, and her stalward crew, under Captain Angus Walters, became known and admired around the world. When the global economy faced stormy waters in the 1930's, Bluenose increasingly served as a cultural and tourism promotional vessel. Although Canadians lobbied strongly to preserve the ship as a national symbol, Bluenose was sold in 1942 and worked as a freighter in the Caribbean. On January 28, 1946, the ship was lost off the coast of Haiti. A replica, Bluenose II, was launched in 1963 and gifted to the government of Nova Scotia in 1971. Bluenose is featured on Canada's ten cent coin.

Should the price of gold increase by about 1/3 then the gold value in the coin will match its present collectable value.

The store owner is said to have more of them at home. My plan is to get as many of them as possible.

I haven't stepped up to collecting gold yet

It may well be more addictive than tobacco. 😎

Years ago on a visit to the Athen's museum the ancient gold coins of Greece in their collection were incredible. They were in as good a condition as the two pictured in this post. If anything lasts forever it's gold.

Being a Nova Scotian the Bluenose on them had a special appeal. Containing 1/25th of an ounce of gold they would be handy for trading in the post-apocalyptic world when your generator is out of gas and there is no electricity to trade in crypto.

Just sayin' 🤓

It's valued in my 2015 Coins of Canada book (must really get a new one) as $130CAD. Gold was about $1500CAD/ounce in 2015. It is $2268.55CAD today. The value of gold in the coin is $90.72CAD at today's spot price. They cost me $140CAD each.

So taking the 2015 collectable price gold would have to rise 43% to have the spot and the collectable values equal. My bet is that inflation will see gold value rise drastically in the next year or two at least against non-USD fiat.

The great part of being a numismatic is that one loves to have the coin just for the coin's sake regardless of investment outcomes. 😎

Awesome gold coin, @novacadian! I really love gold, and I stack them in fractional size. And like you, I stack to save value and look at precious metals as a hedge, rather than an investment. I imagine you have a horde of gold already. I still have to fill a pouch of it.

STACK IN, my friend.

Yeah these coins really appealed to me for those reason mentioned in the comment threads. Like you, the fractional coins are especially appealing. Needless to say they would be easier to use should occasion require it; but they seem to me more like jewellery in the small and more delegate size. These two are about the size (if not exactly) of a dime.

Thanks for your comment!
