Next Colony: Nemesis Chapter 9, Page 8

After a long day and a long night of pacing back and forth between his private quarters and the Control Room, Jack Steel felt mentally, physically and morally exhausted. His mind continued to ruminate over and over, searching for any possible reason for why Vice Admiral Maxwell had made such a drastic decision without saying anything at all. Why would his best friend do this? Did he not consider in what awkward situation he was putting the Admiral? Who else was involved? Who could he trust? How deep and far-reaching was the plot? What about the Yamato at Genesis6? And why had Commodore Curione acquired yet another Yamato? So many questions whirled through Jack's mind that it made him dizzy. He felt helpless as he stared endlessly at the large monitor of the Control Room, watching the Yamato7 slowly heading straight for Starbase P2. By his side stood his father-figure, who he endearingly called Chief.

Why Starbase P2, Chief, I don't get it? We know that this Common Copper Planet was involved in the Great Siege, but so were others. Why not go after one of the closer planet? It just doesn't make sense!

  • I know, Mr. Steel. I'm just as baffled as you are.

And why is Commodore Curione allowing this to happen? Don't they realize the consequences we may now face?

  • I share your frustrations, son. I'm as clueless as you are. I was just a Chief Science Officer at the time, as I am now, and was not involved in the many meetings that took place at the time. And you were only a volunteer. You and I have very little knowledge of the Great Siege.

I don't know what else to do!

Without warning, the Chief Communications Officer yelled out, "Admiral! We have a transmission coming in from the missing Yamato! It's Vice Admiral Maxwell!"

  • Attention Genesis Starfleet! This is First Class of Starbase Genesis1! The time has come to accept or reject me! My mission is part of a destiny that could not have been avoided, and I have the full support of my men, as well as Starbases Genesis1 and 2.

Vice Admiral Maxwell, you turn that fucking Yamato around immediately; that's an order!

  • Sorry Sir, but the only one giving orders here today, is me! In time, you will all understand why this had to be done! The signs were clear to me, and I have accepted the call!

What signs?! What the hell are you talking about?

  • You wouldn't understand, Jack! Genesis7, Yamato7... Did you know that this Yamato has a firepower of 77! Don't you see, 77 is the magic number! We humans have always believed that 7 was a lucky number. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't! Who knows!

You're not making sense, John! This is madness!

  • No, Admiral, this isn't madness! This is Inescapable Justice!

DAMMIT, JOHNATHAN, THIS IS MUTINY!!!

  • Yes, Sir, it most certainly is! I had a good teacher! First Class out!

JOHNATHAN?! JOHN?!

"Sorry, Admiral, but the transmission has ended." said the Communications Officer.

Jack paced back and forth, his mind racing, his heart pounding. Suddenly he stopped and turned towards the monitor...

Computer, search all possible correlations between Starbase P2 and the number 77?!

Stardate 97149.6 - 77 Corvettes were destroyed on Starbase P2 during the battles of the Great Siege.

I don't get it! I just don't get it!

Meanwhile, deep in the remote caves of Starbase P2...

Lieutenant Anthony Rafalski, and his men, sat around the campfire, doing their best to keep warm. Stranded on the planet since the days of the Great Siege, the 77 pilots managed to salvage as much as they could from their destroyed Corvettes, allowing them to survive the harsh environment. Former Captain Curione had sent the fleet on a Support Mission in the hopes that Admiral @cryptoriddler would not attack his own planet... but this was not the case. The grounded fleet was easily destroyed, but the crew received advanced warning to flee from the scene, and to await a rescue mission. No one could have imagined that it would have taken this long for the Genesis Starfleet to recover the necessary force to go back for their lost soldiers. Hope was almost lost, when...

  • Lieutenant Rafalski, come quickly! There's a enormous space station in the sky!

Is it Genesis?!

  • I don't know, Sir! But it just appeared out of no where!

Quickly, turn on the transponder!

Meanwhile, aboard the Yamato7...

  • First Class, Sir, there's an extremely high frequency being pulsed from the planet!

Range?!

  • Sir, it's 77 Terahertz!

That's them!!! Localize the signal and dispatch the rescue pods!

Dozens of small craft shot out from the massive Yamato, while the men on the ground prepared to evacuate. In little time, all of the lost crewmen were reunited with their never forgotten hero, First Class!
