I just turned my account from a minnow into an Orca... What now?

avatar
(Edited)

Today is the day when the stars aligned and I made the move that brought me over 48000 SteemPower. This is kind of unreal to say since in order to make that possible just a year back you would have to invest well over 48000 dollars to do that. But what if I told you for me it was not necessarily the lucrative low price that drew me to this decision, but the way steem community managed to change its tracks away from the bottomless hole.
Not only could I not let @slobberchops get all the attention from his own recent upgrade. But there's also just overwhelmingly many reasons to invest in steem once again. Usually I hovered around 8k steempower but in the last 15 months, I have been powering all the way down to 3k SP. Effectively making my account a minnow. While I did explain the reason for that in another post I can shortly summarize it here: From a consumer point of view, you know, those who just like to blog and curate... Steem felt dying, stagnant and artificial. Despite people were still developing within the blockchain it all seemed to be a waste when the very fundamentals were wrong and it felt wrong as a blogger to have invested money into a project where blogging meant more interaction with bots than with actual human beings. Well, this has changed now with the new steem blossoming and I can only imagine it gets better from here.

addtext_com_MTczOTE3MTk0NzA.jpg

So I started writing down on a paper the reasons for and against investing in steem

To InvestTo not Invest
Steem has 2 times bounced from 10 cents levelsSteem might go to 0
People are showing greed can be controlledOther cryptos could raise before steem does
Amazing projects developing on the Steem blockchainStill a lot of skeptical people(although not as many)
HF21 made stacking SP valuable for great curation rewardsmass adoption still not possible IMO.
HF21 turned most bots into manual curatorsSteem still fails to attract big inverstors
48.000SP once cost at least 48.000dollarsSteem needs a rebrand?
Steem is the only crypto I actually USE-
Not gonna break my life if everything turned out wrong-
Community not dependant on the official steem inc.-
Steem inc. still stepping up a bit, I guess.-
Earning steem while waiting for price action is great-
Development still going strong despite low prices-
Projects managed to survive soon 1½ year of bear-market-

it is always important to be objective on investing matters but I might fail a bit to do it here, although I tried my best!
To me, the most important is looking at the product and see what we can use it for. Steem is already proven to be useful both for basic bloggers like myself(I did, after all, manage to live abroad without a job for 2 years). But ALSO I think it is super vital to see many entrepreneurs who choose to build their own projects on the steem blockchain. That is to me probably the most important aspect. The fact developers are motivated to risk their time and money on building here is something you cannot say of every project out there in the world. Especially not inside of crypto.

Note of "Steem needs a rebrand?": Steem has a big history and sadly a lot of information out there on the internet are giving out the wrong impression of what steem is. I think it is a shame because if you google you will find a lot of very old articles that give out not only skeptical opinions but also being downright wrong if you see what steem is today. People still mistakenly mix "Steemit" and "Steem" as being the same.

Of course, this was just all an idea I had and I did try to imagine a reality where steem would be rebranding itself. Would it then help give people the right information when they are to google up this "newsteem coin"? Steem is so different than what it used to be 3 years ago so it breaks my heart when I see these really old articles flowing around that spreads wrong information.

Food for thought I guess.
seniors.jpg

Only the true seniors of steem knows...

Although when I just started on steem and got hyped about those guys yelling "STEEM TO 100 DOLLARS IN 1 YEAR". I did learn quickly this is absolute bullshit(sorry for the word). However, I do believe what once has happened can happen again and when it comes to markets this is even more important. I am quite sure some of you might have experienced this scenario of steem being at 16 cents a few years back, were also many people wondered "should we buy or quit?".
This is at least the information you see when looking at old articles and posts in 2016/2017, The blockchain never forgets...

It just so happens that steem has indeed been falling down to the levels we see now, twice. Both times just before you would think steem would go to 0 it made a run for 3 dollars and above.
Together with the fact that we see bitcoin dominance being extremely high at over 70% (as of writing this).
This has previously meant that people are starting looking into other coins to put their gains into. This is what I have done with steem in this case.

To me, these factors are secondary and are only a confirmation that things could turn around. The most important really is the direction of the community and the fact we finally made it out of the bid bot era... after almost 2 years of bid bot dominance, steem finally made a turn in the right direction(and oh boy did we turn wrong a lot!).

I just don't think there could have been a better time to see our steem get back on track and despite all odds turn everything around. As I said, the stars aligned for me here and I grabbed the chance.

In the end, there's nobody else than myself I have to convince... And that was quite easy so let us move along to what actually matters.
oHANDINGOUTMONEYfacebook.jpg

I want to put my SteemPower where it matters

All of this fresh SP and then I actually have found it hard for me to use it all. While I do already support some people before I made this step(lucky those I guess) it is not enough to hold my voting power off 100%. So I guess I have a certain responsibility to use my steempower where it is the most impactful. I see two ways on how I can do this:

  1. Headhunt some authors out that make brilliant work. This is how I first started out and some whales/Orcas did vote me above 100 dollars quite a few times. That was all I needed to get steem under my skin; A good bit of recognition. I have also witnessed this is what happened to many others. Where either a dolphin sized account made certain people stick around for more. (trust me, @slobberchops and @steevc almost has a love story in this regard. (not that I am jealous of course... really!) I guess it's not always about the reward, but the recognition from each other and I believe we all can do our part to make steem a bit gluier.

On a note for that I would like to support those that have the same interests as me; that is either some really geeky stuff such as observing space, creative ways of writing and of course the obvious one: Travel & outdoors.

  1. I would love to support certain projects in any way I can. For me, I see a lot of sense in supporting @travelfeed and their platform travelfeed.io since they seem to do so much right in order to create a space for travelers to share their knowledge.
This will, of course, happen through joining their curation trail and also manually upvote people who use their platform directly.

I like the idea of not splitting my SteemPower too thin and make it a bit more impactful so, for now, this is my two main objectives. Let's see how long that will last, I am hoping for a week.

Of course, if you have any suggestions I am happy to check it out.

See you on #newsteem!

A big leap of faith and I honestly didn't expect you to return, but it's good too see you back.

Remember when we were talking about 'The Dolphin League?', that was almost a year ago, but it seems like yesterday.

I'm making a point of finding under-appreciated work every day now, giving it a decent vote and a resteem. Just one..., more will piss people off... too many resteems.

If everyone did this, then more might take that leap you have.

A lot has happened since then, indeed. That was in the middle of all the madness when things really looked dim and honest authors had no chance in getting anywhere, I hated that so it made sense to try finding away at least some could get by without sacrificing themself to the bidbots. I actually didn't expect myself to return but I always kept an eye out to see how everything was heading. I like how things are now and I see so many people getting good attention for well-made work. Even the trending pages looks pretty decent already.

Sounds like a good idea with finding a good article and give it some good support, and yes even a resteem once in a while. I would find it cool if one day we could get a resteem function where a person could add a little text like: "Hey, check out this guy he is writing about..."
So yeah, cheers bud!

Congrats dude! I was considering buying another 10K a few days ago but something in my gut stopped me before right clicking "buy" :)

I am finding it hard to put my all my voting power to good use. My feed is pretty much dead and although I spend at least an hour a day browsing different tags and tribes, finding something good to upvote is difficult.

Yeah I feel you. I had that gut feeling for a while and luckily I waited some more to get even better prices.
I have found good success looking at authors that are getting attention from some of the major curator projects (travelfeed, OCD etc.). Not that I vote only just the post they approved but future work made by the given author(s)

If you really find it hard to put your voting power to good use, I am happy to take some support. I do feel a bit undervalued, but I accept it, as steem - in the end - is quite a fair game.

Woah, 48 000 Steem powered up - that's massive!

When there's increasingly more people returning and powering up when seeing the turnaround that HF21 has had for behavior and economy, there's only so long the price can keep going down. Steemit is also stopping selling for a month which will lessen the liquid supply in the market. I don't actually think Steemit selling their stake as a bad thing, because it improves distribution of stake long-term, but for the short term, perhaps halting power down can have a stabilizing effect on the price which will recover confidence. The price already seems to be stabilizing around 15-16 cents.

I have taken the advantage of super cheap Steem, too, and have powered up more than 3k in a short period of time. This would've been unfathomable when I was starting. I'm also noticing a nice increase with manual curation on my posts, which is nice :)

Great to have you back!

It's absolutely absurd to think how cheap 3k steem is right now and if one believes in steem and its product, its an absolute steal... I used to think buying for 1 dollar/steem was cheap lol. :)

Good to see the positive energy flowing through the steem blockchain right now, hopefully, I can contribute!

So great to see confidence building since HF21. My thought was that we were near the bottom at 3275 btc satoshi when buying my Dolphinhood. The magic of being able to earn while HODLing has made the present price difference somewhat irrelevant to me. Congrats on your Orcahood!

Wherever you buy is a good buy right now. I would also have called 50cents a good buy(I guess that's where you brought since we have steem price/BTC at 1525?

of course, it is hard to catch the fallen knife, but the magic with steem is you now have had in that period generated quite a bit of steem passively regardless.

Thanks man!

... but the magic with steem is you now have had in that period generated quite a bit of steem passively regardless.

Absolutelty. Very few crypto can say the same. Think it is about $100 difference (my loss) if the same amount were purchased today because of the rewards my stake (and the two minnows started up on the same purchase) has earned in that time.

Congratulations! :-)

As a general rule I'm not delegating my SP to anyone / anything.

I'm using [wise.vote}(https://wise.vote) in a way that let other manual curators "ask me" to vote for certain things matching my defined rules. It's far better than just doing an automated trail and more effective than voting for links that people send me.
It still has some rough edges, and can be troublesome for curators to cast their votes, but IMHO it's good enough to use it.
For example you can let some author to vote for themselves twice a week with 50% vote or once a week with 100%, but only if it's tagged as #art.

I really like this idea, especially for larger stake holders that might not have time to be everywhere. I suppose anyone can start their own set of rules and invite people in?

Yes, you can even run your own instance so no service will even have your posting key and your own bot will check all requests for votes, validate against rules and vote.

First of all congrats on your purchase and orca status.

That last negative point always intrigued me, the rebranding of Steem. I always hated that name because it is already taken by Steam the gaming platform. It created so much confusion among people who didn't know the difference, it still does. Also early days of mega inflation videos are still there, so it actually makes a lot of sense to rebrand Steem.

Oh my you just took SPUD'ing to a whole new level man! I'm glad to see #newsteem bringing a renewed sense of faith in the platform. I think its pretty unique that we don't yet have an institutional investment as we see with other chains that have dapps, smart contracts and tokens built on them. I still think we're on the ground floor and yes it can go to zero but as new investors start paying attention and the likes of ETH and others seem overvalued, STEEM will look like a steal.

I recently hit dolphin and I want to keep going and see how far this journey takes me, don't plan on quitting any time soon

  1. Best thing about steem is that when you start enumerating your paragraphs

It usually fucks you around a bit

In steemit, you have to be honest, you have to treat it as such, it is a social network and for being different you vote and heal, earning something, you must stay with that spirit, of social network, to interact with people and talk and read about What everyone likes. that's my opinion.

Congrats! I too came back to steem after a break. I think the hardfork was a pretty big step in the right direction. I even think more should go to curation since it lessens the number of ppl making shit posts, and increases the numbers of ppl looking tp upvote good content. So as someone who tries to always make quality, I have noticed a better return organically, without using bots. I just reached minnow myself, but the more i see ppl like you powering up, the more i want to invest more. Can you imagine if we beat previous highs!!!

Hey, Congratulations!!

I have never been upvoted over $100, but it makes me happy to hear that people like you have! Also, I am in line with your reasons too.

For a long time, I was on the fence as well. One day it hit me that Steem was a kick-ass platform. Not just for social media, but for making things and growing communities. WOW, you know. If I had another $4,600 I would Orca up as well.. .but funds are tight for me right now so it's the long road to Orca hood for me. lol.

Congratulations again. Going to start and follow your posts.
Help make steem great!

When did you join steem? Getting up voted over 100 dollars, hell even 200 was impossible the last 2 years or so because every whale became a bidbot. Right now it is still hard because the steem price is low of course. But I guess this post serves as a prove it is now possible again. :) Keep going!

Congrats mate on powering up. Though not as much as you, I have invested on steem too. 500 more SPs to go before I get a dolphin status. Hope I will achieve it soon.

After a long time, the steem statistics shows that the amount of steem in exchanges is coming down day by day! A move in good direction.

Wow! What insight! What a well thought out investment. So happy for you brother! I really think you put yourself in an excellent position here in steemit world! I would say one of the biggest benefits on your list would be.....

"Earning steem while waiting for price action is great"

I totally agree with that. For me my risk appetite is around 10,000 steem held in SP and when it gets closer to 11,000 (from earnings) I'Il cash out 1,000 steem into bitcoin or cash at whatever the price of steem is, as a hegde against it going to zero while still holding that 10k to keep me well invested if the price rallies.

Curious to know if you plan to just keep powering up your earnings or pull from your earnings for monthly living expenses or other kinds of investment diversification. As I believe with your quality content combined with your large SP, you could be making enough steem even at 16 cents to possibly live on. Not a bad investment at all if that is the case, and makes me consider doing the same. Heck, look at how much this post earned you. Not too shabby! Especially at 16 cent steem.

Well done my friend,

Very happy for you!

From Playa del Carmen Mexico,

As of right now, there's going to observe how high my curation reward is going to be together with how much on average I am going to make on my articles. My articles are going to be bigger but fewer because that is more fun for me and SO FAR it seems to actually pay off, no doubt. My last two articles really hit the nail as you see and just from those two alone I can see I am to already get around 400 steem/SP.(yes, that is after reducing 50% since that is what I will receive).

Right now, I don't feel like selling any steem because I don't need the money and I rather just stack it up until steem at least doubles in price from here. I might start pulling out 50% of what I earn when I am reaching over 50k SP but it really depends on how the market is going to be. If it is in an uptrend it would probably not be wise.

Enjoy Mexico my friend!
