Extended Until Further Notice

We ended last week with an announcement from the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, regarding the current lockdown. Unfortunately no good news, the lockdown which was scheduled to end on 16th of April, has been extended by another two weeks, to the end of April. I completely understand the reasoning for the extension, especially if you look at how things are going in Italy, Spain and the United States. The New York death rates are very concerning, but to keep in mind that it is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The reason I mention this is due to some reports I have read regarding the spread of the virus through plumbing as well as ventilation in such massive buildings.

Another point to keep in mind is that unlike here in South Africa where the deaths due to the Wuhan Virus are only allocated if it is a direct cause, in the States however anyone who dies and is also infected, counts as death due to the virus. To be certain these deaths were directly caused by the virus, there would have to be an autopsy done, which is proving to be problematic at the moment due to the stain on hospitals. Another thing to keep in mind is that, New York has an annual death rate of 156k which is about 13k a month, and the majority of death are being reported as Covid-19. So are these number accurate?

I have though about the idea of this lockdown at the expense of basically shutting down the world economy, and I fear it might only be making the problem worse in the long ran. I'll use South Africa as an example, because we have about reached to point now where the unemployment fund is close to being depleted, and the only thing stopping all out anarchy is the social welfare payments that about half the population receives. Now when there is now absolutely no tax revenue coming into the government because business has come to a complete halt, what comes next is going to be both economic and the virus.
