A day in Rotterdam

avatar
(Edited)

I spent a day with family in the Dutch harbor city of Rotterdam. It is the main entry point to continental Europe so pretty much its whole economy involves trade of some kind. It is quite mind blowing to see what kind of infrastructure is necessary to maintain the logistical works. Also, it indicates that somehow location of a country is at least part determining of its economical success on the world stage. The Netherlands is perfectly located to make use of its surroundings eventhough its surroundings are in great part man made, as a result of reclaiming sea. If you can mould your surroundings you can mould your success.

I missed this blog so upvoted your comment, which is still in the 7-day window. Last night I was surfing my iPad (trying to go to sleep) when I came across your blog and a website dedicated to nostalgia about a neighborhood in Brooklyn NY (USA). The two posts reminded me that the Dutch settled this part of the US and had a major influence on its development.
If you look at the map on the link you'll see an area called New Utrecht. My brother went to New Utrecht high school.
One day I may write a blog about the early Dutch settlement of New York.
Anyway, thought I'd share that bit of trivia with you.

The old Utrecht is a great city too :o) Rotterdam is somewhat a special city in the Netherlands since it has almost no old buildings. It was almost completely destroyed during the second world war. So the style and vibe is completely different from an old city like Utrecht.
