Movie Review: Knives Out(2019)

Death, detective, dysfunctional family, mix up that whole setup in this decade and you’ve got a modern day “Whodunit” film, the basic premise of knives out in a rather short sentence.

But this is not like your other average ones from the aforementioned genre in a sense as it has a quite famous actors/actresses ensemble who’s works you’ve had had the pleasure of seeing at least once and then you might’ve forgot about them.

Seeing General Zod (Michael Shannon), Captain America (Chris Evans), James Bond (Daniel Craig) share a screen together made me chuckle a little thinking about all the memes. And that is the most pleasing thing about this flick is that you’ll see all those pretty and known faces come out of their known method of acting and break a little their shell of “seriousness” as actors.

Rian Johnson, the director and writer, acclaimed for his other movies such as Star wars: The last Jedi, Looper, has done a wonderful job in creating an almost great murder mystery thriller.

Every other literature from different linguistics has their own famous detectives such as Hercule Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, or Bengali detectives such as Feluda, Bomkesh Baxi etc (As am a Bengali speaker, So I know, Duh!. They are one of the greatest detectives in worlds history of literature). Though I wouldn’t dare putting Benoit Blanc, the protagonist detective of knives out in their ranks but Daniel Craig somehow fitted well with the character as an obnoxious yet relatable one.

As all the detectives has their ticks, such as the over the top suspenseful ended but yet it has something to it grand reveal at the end describing who’s the murder and how they got caught, making the detectives human yet untouchable, Benoit Blanc also follow that same formula. His westerner cow-boyish accent turned him into a character who you’ll want to see again.

Jamie Lee Curtis at the end of her career is also as flamboyant as she was 15 years ago. Most notably among the others Ana de Armas plays the second most vital role as the pawn in a much larger game of chicken.

This was a fresh movie with great but not The Oscars great Cinematography but yes the screenplay was Oscars great as it got a nomination for that. The Music composition was tuned to perfectly creating the suspense needed. But half way through the movie you’ll know who’s the Whodunit but not “Howdunit”. Seeing as this always spoiled the joy out of thriller mystery’s for me, this at least held up to other great works.
