Tools are important / Das richtige Werkzeug ist wichtig

Beim Stricken oder Häkeln braucht man einiges an "Zubehör" und nichts ist ärgerlicher, als lange nach etwas zu suchen oder darauf verzichten zu müssen, wenn man nicht zu Hause ist. Deshalb haben viele eine Tasche für's Zubehör, oft mit Stricknadeln oder Häkelnadeln.

You need quite some things while knitting or crocheting and nothing is more aggravating than having to look for it or having to do without when you're not at home. That's why a lot of knitters etc. have a "Notions Bag", often ones with knitting needles or crochet hooks in it.

Ich bin ein Fan von "Stricken unterwegs" und wollte eine größere Tasche nicht immer mitschleppen und in meine jeweiligen Projekttaschen verstauen. Ich habe mich für eine kleine Plastikbox entschieden, die ich in einem Billigladen gekauft habe, sie ist ca. 10 x 7 x 3,5 cm groß. Was da drin ist? Das wird gleich gezeigt :)

I'm a fan of "mobile knitting" and didn't want to schlep such a big bag and wanted to fit it into my project bags. I decided on a small plastic box I bought in a discount store, it's about 10 x 7 x 3.5 cm. You want to know what's in it? I'll make a show and tell ;)

In der Mitte ist die geöffnete Box. Auf dem Papier im Deckel stehen abgekürzt die Anweisung für den Maschenstich (z. B. für den Zehenabschluß bei Socken) - das werde ich nie auswendig können!

In the middle you see the opened box. The piece of paper in the lid shows the abbreviations for the Kitchener stitch - I'll never learn that!

1 + 2	show my scissors, it's foldable though I rarely use that. I'd do it if I'd store it in a more unsecure way.	Meine Handarbeitsschere, man kann sie zusammenfalten. Allerdings mache ich das selten, sie ist in der Box gut gesichert.
3	A knitting ruler - well, part of it ;) I use the holes in the middle that show you the size of knitting needles and there are inches on it, too. Sometimes that comes handy.	Ein Stricklineal, naja, ein Teil davon ;) Ich habe es hauptsächlich wegen der Löcher in der Mitte zum Messen von Nadelgrößen und wegen der Zollangaben an einer Seite. Ab + zu braucht man das schon.
4	A small measuring tape, not even a meter long. That's normally long enough. It's a bit of a keepsake: It shows a writing "25 Jahre Textil-Kaufhaus Schweers" (25 years Schweers clothes shop) and this shop shut down long time ago.	Ein kleines Maßband, knapp einen Meter lang - das reicht fast immer. Es ist ein Erinnerungsstück mit der Aufschrift "25 Jahre Textil-Kaufhaus Schweers", weil es das Geschäft auch schon lange nicht mehr gibt.
5	A six sided dice (yes, there are others!) - for counting rows or other repeats. I have row counters (they are in use right now) but for short-term, small stuff I use a dice - simply turn it to the next number.	Ein sechsseitiger Würfel (ja, es gibt auch noch andere!). Ich nutze ihn zum Zählen von Reihen oder Rapports. Natürlich habe ich auch herkömmliche Reihenzähler (alle in Arbeit gerade), aber für kurz mal eben ein paar Reihen zählen ist ein Würfel sehr praktisch. Einfach zur nächsten Zahl drehen und fertig.
6	A spool with yarn - you often need scrap yarn. In a way it's too good for this purpose: it was in a skein of sock yarn to be used for reinforcing the heel (Jawoll by Lang Yarns). But I don't do that anymore and I didn't want to waste it. And the color is noticeable - you always see this red!	Eine Garnspule - braucht man öfter mal. Eigentlich ist das Garn zu gut für "mal eben was damit machen + hinterher wegwerfen" - das war als Beilaufgarn bei Sockengarn dabei (Jawoll von Lang Yarns). Aber ich nutze kein Beilaufgarn und die Farbe ist praktisch weil man das Rot wirklich gut sieht.

7	A thimble finger ring for stranded knitting - I haven't done that for two years and don't plan to start again soon. But I keep it in this box because then I know where it is ;)	Ein Fingerring für zweifarbiges Stricken. Das hab ich zwar seit Jahren nicht gemacht (und plane es auch nicht), aber wenn das Ding hier drin ist weiß ich wo es ist ;)
8	Safety pins in different sizes	Sicherheitsnadeln in verschiedenen Größen
9	Needles in different sizes	Näh- und Stopfnadeln in verschiedenen Größen
10	An end cap for cables - I use the Knitpro system with interchanging needles. You can remove the needle and screw on the end cap and no stitch will be lost.	Eine Endkappe für meine auswechselbaren Rundstricknadeln. Wenn man die Nadelspitze entfernt und diesen Stopper aufschraubt, dann sitzen die Mascheln auf dem Seil und können nicht entkommen.
11	Cable keys to fasten said needles on the cables. You only need one (and you could use a darning needle for that) but I have them and (see 7) this way I know where they are.	Kabelschlüssel um die eben erwähnten Nadelspitzen zu befestigen. Man kann eigentlich auch eine Stopfnadel dafür nehmen aber (wie beim Fingerring) so weiß ich wo sie sind.
12	Stitch markers. The round ones are rubber bands, originally meant for making bracelets.	Maschenmarkierer. Die runden sind Gummiringe, gedacht um Armbänder daraus zu knüpfen.
13	A googly eye - you never know when you need some... I thought there were two in the box, I have to put some more in it.	Ein Kullerauge - man weiß nie wann man sowas braucht... Eigentlich sollten es zwei sein, ich muss mal wieder "nachfüllen".

What's off my needles

Ein schönes Paar Socken für eine Nichte - sie hat sich das Garn aus meinem Vorrat ausgesucht. Mein Spitzname für diese Socken ist "Alpacas auf der Flucht": Das Garn enthält 20% Alpaka und beim Stricken haben sich einige lange weiße Fasern gelöst, als wollten sie entkommen;) Der Alpakaanteil machte es eine Freude mit dem Garn zu stricken. Ich bin wirklich froh dass ich davon 200g gekauft hatte!

A nice pair of socks for a niece - she chose the yarn from my stash. My nickname for these socks is "Escaping Alpacas": the yarn contains 20% Alpaca and while knitting some long white fibers get loose like they want to get away ;) The alpaca made the yarn a joy to knit. I'm so happy I bought 200g of it!

Techniken: Von unten nach oben, nachträgliche Ferse als stumpfe Sternspitze, Maschen elastisch abgehäkelt. /Technical information: toe-up, afterthought-heel in star pattern, elastic crocheted bind-off.

What's on my needles

The dreaded Aldi-Socks. Especially after knitting with the other sock yarn... Whatever, the faster I knit the faster I'm finished with them ;) First heel is done, my sister will try it on this evening and I'll hope to finish the socks till the weekend.		Die ungeliebten Aldi-Socken. Besonders nach dem schönen Garn der anderen Socken... Egal, ich will die so schnell wie möglich fertig bekommen. Eine Ferse ist fertig, heute abend ist Anprobe und dann hoffe ich dass ich die Dinger bis zum Wochenende von den Nadeln habe.
The seashell shawl - Row 104, 250 stitches, still no color change but that should start soon. 70g of 100g yarn left and I will knit till that is used up.		Die "Mupfel" - knappt über 100 Reihen, 250 Maschen auf der Nadel, bisher 30% des Garns verbraucht. Ich warte auf den Farbwechsel ;)
