NeedleworkMonday: Knitting horizontal cables / Querverzopft [Ger/Eng]

Wir alle haben sie schon gesehen und manche von uns haben sie auch schon gestrickt: Zopfmuster. Die sind ja normalerweise vertikal ausgerichtet, laufe sozusagen mit der Strickrichtung. Ich habe jetzt ein paar fingerlose Handschuhe ausprobiert, wo der Zopf in Querrichtung liegt. Etwas Ähnliches hatte ich schon einmal gehäkelt, von der gleichen Designerin ist diese Anleitung.

We have all seen them and some of us have knitted them: cables. They are normally aligned vertically, they run with the direction of knitting. I have now tried out knitting a pair of fingerless gloves where the cable lies in the transverse direction. Something similar I had crocheted before, from the same designer is this instruction.

Als Garn habe ich ein Sockengarn mit Bambus gewählt - es ist sehr bunt und der Farbverlauf kommt dadurch besonders zur Geltung. Man kann auch die einzelnen Zopfteile mit unterschiedlichem Garn machen, dass will ich demnächst einmal ausprobieren. Diese Stulpen haben einen provisorischen Anschlag mittels einer Luftmaschenkette - das rote bzw. hellblaue Garn unten im Bild.

As yarn I chose a sock yarn with bamboo - it is very colourful and the colour gradient brings out the cable pattern. You can also make the individual cable pieces with different yarns, I will try that out soon. These cuffs have a provisional cast on by means of chain stitches - the red or light blue yarn in the picture below.

Zunächst einmal macht man "Rettungsfäden" in die Maschen, dann werden horizontale Schlitze gearbeitet, wo einige Maschen unbestrickt bleiben. Diese werden dann beim nächsten Zopfteil genutzt. Es ist ein wenig fummelig, weil man besonders auf die Fadenführung achten muss: auf dem ersten Foto sieht man, wie der Faden durch die Löcher läuft. Wenn man nicht aufpasst, dann hat man den Faden zwischendurch eingestrickt und darf ribbeln...

First of all, "lifelines" are placed in the stitches, then horizontal slits are worked where some stitches remain unknitted. These are then used for the next cable stitch. It's a bit tricky, because you have to pay special attention to the thread: in the first photo you can see how the thread runs through the holes. If you don't pay attention, then you have knitted the thread in between and you have to unravel it...

In der unteren Hälfte des Bildes sieht man einen fertigen Zopf - eines der Löcher darin ist für den Daumen gedacht. Und in der Anleitung wird alles genau erklärt und in vielen Fotos gezeigt - Anleitungen von Tanja Osswald sind jeden Cent wert.

In the lower half of the picture you can see a finished braid - one of the holes in it is meant for the thumb. And in the instructions everything is explained in detail and shown in many photos - instructions by Tanja Osswald are worth every cent.

Wenn man den Zopf fertig hat, dann wird nur noch kraus gestrickt bis man genug für den Handumfang hat. Das Gewebe ist natürlich sehr dehnbar, deswegen sind solche Sachen ein schönes Geschenk, wenn man genaue Größen nicht kennt.

When you have finished the cables, you knit in garter stitch until you have enough fabric for the circumference of the hand. The fabric is of course very stretchy, so such pieces make a nice gift if you don't know the exact sizes.

Dann nimmt man die Maschen des provisorischen Anschlags auf eine Nadel und entfernt die Luftmaschenkette (oben im unteren Bild). Am schönsten und unsichtbarsten macht man jetzt die Naht im Maschenstich, ich habe aber das "Drei-Nadel-Abketten" gewählt: geht schneller, ist aber auch etwas sichtbarer. Im mittleren Bild sieht man wie zwei Nadeln mit den Maschen links liegen und man mit der rechten Nadel beide gemeinsam abkettet (für das Foto liegt die letzte Masche auf der linken hinteren Nadel). Die Naht rechts ist etwas dicker und sichtbarer als eine gestrickte "Rippe" - aber das siehht man ja nicht, wenn sie später innen liegt. Im unteren Teil sieht man die Naht von der anderen Seite zwischen dem pink und dem lachsfarbenen Garn: wenn man genau hinschaut, sieht man den Unterschied, aber das war mir ziemlich egal.

Then take the stitches of the first row after the provisional cast on on a needle and remove the chain stitches (top in the lower picture). The most beautiful and invisible seam would be done with the Kitchener stitch, but I chose the "3-needle-bind-off": it is faster, if a bit more visible. In the middle picture you see two needles with the stitches on the left and the right needle is used to bind off both together (for the photo the last stitch is on the left back needle). The seam on the right is a bit thicker and more visible than a knitted "rib" - but you can't see that when it's on the inside. In the lower part, you can see the seam from the other side between the pink and the salmon coloured yarn: if you look closely, you can see the difference, but I didn't really care.
