NeedleworkMonday: Getting busy in December / Einiges zu tun im Dezember

Ich bin fertig mit meinen Geschenken für Dezember, sei es für Geburtstage oder für untern Baum zu legen. Aber das bedeutet nicht, dass meine Hände untätig sind, es gibt einige Dinge, die ich ausprobieren möchte. Und eine Bekannte möchte einen "dicken warmen Pullover" für ihren Enkelsohn, der im Januar ankommt. Sie fürchtet, dass dem armen Jungen in seinem Kinderwagen kalt wird. Das war für mich der Anlass, um tief in meinen Garnvorrat zu tauchen und dann alle Reste von blauem (und dazu passendem) Garn loszuwerden. Ja, sie will den Pullover in traditionellem Blau. Ich werde das mit doppelt genommenen Sockengarn stricken, das sollte warm genug für einen Winter in Norddeutschland sein ;)

I'm finished with my gifts for December, be it for birthdays of the big event on 24th. But that doesn't mean my hands are idle, there are several things I want to try out or prepare to have them done when they are needed. A friend wants a "thick warm sweater" for her grandchild who's due in January. She fears the poor boy will get cold in his pram. That's perfect for doing some "stash diving" and getting rid of all the leftovers of blue yarn. Yes, she wants the sweater in traditional blue. I will knit that with sock yarn held double, that should be warm enough for a winter in Northern Germany ;)

What's off my needles

Das Duinen Tuch in der kleinen Version - und bei mir noch kleiner, da ich nur 92 Gramm Garn statt 100 Gramm hatte. Nun, es gefällt mir und es wird nicht das letzte Mal sein, dass ich dieses Tuch gehäkelt habe, sei es die normale oder die kleine Version.

The Duinen shawl in its smaller version - and even smaller due to only having had 92 grams of yarn instead of 100 grams. Well, I like it and it won't be the last time I crocheted this shawl, be it the normal or the small version.

Es ist einfach zu machen - man könnte es als "mein erstes Häkeltuch" vermarkten ;) Es gibt mehrere unterschiedliche Maschenarten (Reliefstäbchen!), aber man macht eine Reihe mit einer Masche, und diese Reihen sind immer in der gleichen Reihenfolge hintereinander. Man muss die Reihen ein wenig zählen - aber das ist einfach, wenn man die Reihen mit den Löchern verwendet.

It's easy to do - could be named "my first crochet shawl" ;) There are several stitches but you do one row with one stitch, and these rows are always in the same order one after another. You have to count the rows a bit - but that's simple if you use the rows with the eyelets.

Für diese einfache und schnelle Arbeit erhält man ein tolles Ergebnis (zumindest finde ich das). Die Rippen verleihen ihm eine interessante Struktur, der Farbwechsel im Garn kann richtig glänzen und die Form des "Halbmonds mit Ecken" hebt das Tuch unter anderen hervor.

For this simple and fast work you get a great result (at least I think so). The ridges give it an interesting structure, the effects of color changing yarn really show and the form of a "crescent with corners" makes the shawl stand out among others.

Eine weitere Sache, die mir gefällt, ist die Anleitung an sich. Es gibt alles in schriftlicher Form, aber man bekommt auch diese "Häkelschrift" mit diesen interessanten Symbolen. Und eine weitere tolle Idee: Mehrere Fotos für "So sollte das Tuch nach Reihe X aussehen" - wie oft sitzt man mit einer neuen Anleitung und fragt sich, ob man alles richtig gemacht hat?

Another thing I like are the instructions. There is a written instruction, but you also get these symbols that experienced crocheters love. And an additional great idea: Several photos for "this is how your work should look like after row X" - how often do we sit with a new pattern and wonder if we got everything right?

What's on my needles

Nun, am Ende des Jahres mache ich gerne einen MKAL, ein "gemeinsames Stricken mit Geheimnis". Um den Begriff mal aufzudröseln: Ein KAL (oder CAL für Häkeln) ist, wenn viele Menschen gleichzeitig nach der gleichen Anleitung stricken. Sie veröffentlichen Fotos von ihrem Fortschritt, sprechen über das Projekt und bekommen natürlich Antworten auf Probleme, die sie damit haben. Der "Mystery"-Aspekt bedeutet, dass man vorher nicht weiß, woran man genau arbeiten wird.

Well, at the end of the year I like to do a MKAL, a mystery knit-along. Let me explain: a KAL (knit-along) (or CAL for crochet) is when a lot of people knit the same pattern at the same time. They post photos of their progress, talk about the project and, of course, get answers to problem they have with the pattern. The "mystery" aspect means that you don't know beforehand what exactly you will work on.

Für mein aktuelles Projekt wusste ich, dass es ein Cowl war, die Garnstärke und -menge, dass ich zwei Farben brauchte, dass es Zopfmuster und Hebemaschen als Designelemente geben würde. Das Muster besteht aus neun Teilen, die meist jeden zweiten Tag erscheinen. Heute habe ich den vierten Teil erhalten, hatte aber nicht die Zeit, daran zu stricken. Das bedeutet einen arbeitsreichen Tag morgen, so dass ich bereit bin für den nächsten Hinweis am Mittwoch.

For my current project I knew it was a cowl, the amount and weight of the yarn, that I needed two colors, that there would be some cable work and slipped stitches as design elements. The pattern comes in several parts (here: 9), mostly every other day. These parts are called 'clues' and today I got the 4th clue but haven't had the time to knit a single stitch of it. That means a busy day tomorrow so that I'm ready for the next clue on Wednesday.

Um mein Leben noch arbeitsreicher zu machen, begann ich, fingerlose Handschuhe aus dem gleichen Garn zu stricken. Es ist ein DK-Garn, ich war auf der Suche nach dickeren als Sockengarn, weil das weniger Arbeit bedeutet. Aber ich habe nicht viel DK-Garn, das meiste davon ist einfache Baumwolle ("Topflappengarn").

To make my life even busier I started to knit some mitts in the same yarn. It's a DK yarn, and I was looking for something heavier than fingering weight because that means less work. But I don't have a lot of DK yarn, most of that is simple cotton ('potholder yarn').

Ich musste tief in meinem Vorrat stöbern und das Garn, das ich fand, ist eigentlich nicht ideal für diese Art von Stricken. Es ist ein "Tweed"-Garn, d.h. es ist nicht einheitlich dick und ein wenig gesprenkelt - und es ist keine Wolle, sondern eine Mischung aus Seide und Baumwolle. Ich hätte dieses Garn nie gewählt , wenn ich andere Optionen gehabt hätte, aber interessanterweise funktioniert es großartig, ich bin sehr angetan davon, wie es aussieht.

I had to dive deep into my stash and the yarn I found isn't great for this kind of color work. It's a 'tweed' yarn, i.e. it' uneven and speckled - and it's no wool but a silk/cotton mix. Though I would never have chosen this yarn if I had had other options, but interestingly it works great, I love how it looks.

Es gibt eine Art "verkürzte Reihen" an einem Ende des Cowls - man kann die Maschen unter der Bambusnadel in der Mitte des Bildes sehen. Ich habe keine Ahnung, wie das Endergebnis aussehen wird, aber ich bin wirklich neugierig darauf!

There are some kind of 'short rows' at one end of the cowl - you can see the stitches below the bamboo needle in the middle of the picture. I have no idea how the end result will look construction-wise but I'm really curious about it!
