#needleworkmonday :: Reusable Net Bag

avatar

Whenever I go to the grocer, it is always nice to have a bag that is sturdy and that would expand accordingly to the shape and size of the grocery. It is also nice to have a bag or bags that can carry roundish fruits like apples and oranges together, preventing them from rolling around the trolley or tote bag.

That was when I figured I need to make a couple of reusable net bags which are super expandable and super sturdy because of the nature of the yarn and the crochet stitches plus it is airy! Perfect for fruits and onions and garlic! I searched through the net and found this very clear pattern instruction of exactly what I was looking for:
https://mypoppet.com.au/makes/net-produce-bag-crochet-pattern/

The bag started off with the base by crocheting a ring of 6 chains. Row 1 began by adding 8 single crochets into the ring before moving on to row 2 by crocheting 2 single crochets into each of the 8 single crochets.

This was how row 3 looks like where the chain started to form around the circle:

More chains around the base. The pattern said it would start looking like a flat doily which was what I got:

The bag kept forming as I went round and round the rows. At first I joined the first four rows with slip stitch and after that I just continued going around without joining.

The pattern is easy that it could be brought to anywhere to work on. This was at a restaurant while waiting for food:

Then, in the car:

The bag would start to form upwards when you lay it flat sideways:

Once the bag is about the length that I liked (the pattern said about 30 cm in length), I started the finishing at the top with double crochets.

Then, the string for the bag by chaining a long chain:

I chained enough to go round the bag twice, to carry it both sides:

The string was weaved into the space in between the double crochet finishing:

And done!

The bag can stretch very long because of the net stitches and the yarn was also stretchy:

The next one, I am going to make a shorter one. I prefer to have many of these net bags to separate my grocery :)

I made similar bags, but with a wider upper edge and I added "handles" to the cord :)

I like that - a very pretty pattern. I made a similar one with handles, but I like the drawstring version you've made. I agree with the shorter length - that's my plan, too - they are deceptive when you are making them, aren't they? :)

Oo I remember yours! I remember featuring your bag! :) I think yours is sturdier. Yes! It stretches so long with heavy fruits haha. Thank you @shanibeer! I will work a new one based on your pattern :D

Oh groan.... I feel this heavy sense of guilt.... I honestly always forget my bags at home when shopping. I mostly juggle the groceries precariously on my arms or have to find an abandoned box to transport them home (but because of @crosheille‘s coinholder I at least can use a cart inside the shop)
Your bag is such a good idea... I really should try to make one (or one of @akkippon‘s bags)
To distract from my slackness: which kind of crochet hook do you use? I have never seen a golden one 😮😮😮

Heheh.. bags are fun but putting them into a box works too! Yes, I am intrigued by @akippon's bags too :) She gives a lot of thought into her bags and it makes sense too with groceries. I think these net bags are fun to make because it works very quickly. You can probably whip up one in an hour :)
Oh and that crochet hook is very cheap, about 2 dollars. I got it from Daiso, a Japanese chain store that sells things at about 2 dollars an item :D

YOU HAVE A JAPANESE SHOP????!!! I have to order everything Japanese online and I love their crochet hooks and knitting/crochet accessories. And the shipment cost are sometimes bigger than the items itself 😱 I need Daiso 🙏🌈 THe shops here have mostly Prym, Knitpro or Addi crochet hooks and all three are not for me. They have very round tips and feel clumsy to me (although addi has great knitting needles, but these are not sold in shops... so strange)

I really love the colors in this yarn. It looks like this would take awhile to make, you said it’s a quick work up? These are so neat to have. I like @muscara’s and @shanibeer’s versions too. It makes sense why you want to make them a little shorter since they stretch soooo long.

Even though we have purchased bags from Aldi and reuse them over and over again, it would be kind of cool making some of these for our fruits and veggies. I don’t need any more To Make items! 😩😂

Nice work!
