Knitting to Pass the Time Away

I took one skein of silk yarn with me the last time that I flew on an airplane. I was in the middle of reading a book, and I knew that I would finish the book before the flight was over. I took a pair of circular knitting needles and one skein of silk yarn with me so that I could start a new project.

I started off thinking about fingerless mittens but I did not remember once I started to knit that I needed to join in the round.

For seasoned knitters you are probably wondering how that could happen. I was just needing to pass the time away. I don’t like to watch movies and TV when I am flying, I prefer to knit, crochet, or read.

I am a better crocheter than a knitter and I can crochet projects just by thinking of a design in my mind.

I quickly discovered that I can’t just do that when I am knitting. After I had made it about 3 1/2 inches, I started to wonder what I was making. It did not look like anything that I wanted to keep. It was too narrow to be a scarf and I did not want to put a seem in a mitten.

I did something that I never hardly ever do. I unraveled the project and start it over again. This time, I joined the knitting in the round but I have a long way to go before this even looks close to being a mitten.

When the weather outside is freezing cold, then I like to knit or crochet projects that I can finish quickly. I don’t mind working on longer projects when I am flying, because I don’t have anything else to do. When I am at home however, I have two knitting machines at my disposal. The knitting machines are too tempting plus I have a full stash of all types of yarns to choose from for a new project.

I have a feeling that these mittens may not be finished until the weather turns warmer. In the meantime, I started to decorate a denim bag with a knitting phrase that I saw online. I am going to embellish the bag with fabric paint.
