The Bulky Fisherman Afghan - Trading Skills

Do you remember my first sewing project with my mom? Yes the one where I had to add in a zipper? My mom told me I was very bold and ambitious to want to sew in a zipper for a beginners project. After awhile I started to regret it and became intimidated by the zipper. In the end it worked out fine and it wasn’t has hard as I thought.

Fast forward to now. I am teaching my mother how to crochet. We decided to exchange skills while we still have the time. Sewing has been placed on hold until I get the supplies I need for my next project. In the meantime while my mom is learning crochet she is teaching my daughter how to paint on canvas. We always try to keep crafting in some way.

Now jumping back to my mother, remember how she said I was ambitious? Well you see that Afghan in the above photo? No, not the dark brown colored one on top but the ivory one with diamond, popcorn and cable stitches. Yes, that’s the one. Well guess who wants to make that for her first project? Yep, my mother...guess it takes one to know one! 😂

This pattern is ancient and was published in the year 1986 when I was just five years old. She has been holding on to this with hopes she will learn to crochet it. Now she has a daughter that can teach her.

Every Monday she’s been coming over to practice one stitch at a time. She already knew how to chain and single crochet. We started with double crochet and slip stitches.

Here is the pattern with the needed stitches. Last night she learned and practiced the cable stitch. She got frustrated and frogged it without letting me see her mistakes haha! I told her that wasn’t fair because she always gets to see my sewing ones. 😏 She also learned how to join another color to her work.

Hopefully next time she’ll let me get some pictures of her progress (I may have to sneak them 😁) so you can see how’s she’s doing. Her stitches have gotten so much neater and more unison. The cable part confused her which caused the sudden frogging episode. I encouraged her to take her time, keep practicing and it will make more sense as she goes.

After she learns and gets comfortable with the cables we will be doing the popcorn stitches. It’s really a beautiful Afghan!
