So many crazy animals!!!

It's good to be home. On our first night back, we encountered multiple Leopard Frogs and Newts, along with an Armadillo and a mama Opossum with a pouch full of babies! Wow, it's crazy down here!

This reminds me of the time I once tried to save a baby opossum. I was 12 years old and it was the first year I lived in Arkansas in the mid 90s. An opossum was going after our chickens and my Mom's boyfriend went out and killed it. In the morning when we got up there were several dead baby opossums that crawled out of the mothers pouch in the middle of the night after the beating and they all froze to death. When I got home from school that day I started examining the dead mother and all the dead babies. I remember I nudged her dead body with my shoe flipping her body over to the other side. When I did this, I heard what sounded like little snarling sounds coming from inside her pouch and discovered one baby opossum was still alive in the pouch that didn't crawl out. So I tried to save it. Sadly over the years I lost the picture we had taken of me holding it. It lived for two days before passing away. It was still too young and it wouldn't eat even though we tried putting food and milk in its mouth.

What a sad story, at least you tried... We are going to keep an eye out for this one, and hopefully get to meet her babies when they are a little older...

crazy to think that you are praising the opossum when we are trying to get rid of them [I have a feeling that they are a different animal hiding under the same name]
here they run wild in the native forests and eat the smaller birds and animals as well as killing the trees.
mind you, we don't have snakes or bitey spiders either. only truckloads of rabbits that you are welcome to take away.
