Chilling on a Hidden Beach - Los Angeles, CA

A Nice Cool Evening for a Walk

It's been a bit hot and dry recently, so it was a nice change to get a cool evening with high humidity. The humidity has been about 4-6% over the last month, and we've really been suffering! To make matters worse, we've been getting a lot of fires and the allergies have been killer.

Today we hiked down a trail that not many people know about; or at least we hardly ever see anyone on. It opens up to a rocky beach that is quite nice and isolated. Every once in a while we find some brave surfers down here, but the water is quite rough and the rocks are jagged so it isn't really recommended.

I guess that's a decision that people have to make for themselves, but I have no desire to get in the water here, that's for sure.

The beach is absolutely covered with a thick layer of seaweed that is constantly washing up. In some places, there are swarms of flies over it like I've never seen before. Luckily, it doesn't really smell that bad. It doesn't seem to rot in a gross way like dead animals; it just sort of decays and dries out.

Like most of the coastline around here, it is surrounded by cliffs and desert plants. I always wonder about this particular bush in the above photo. It is completely unique in the entire area. It's the only one like it on the entire beach, and there are no others anywhere on the trail.

It makes me wonder if someone drops some seeds there years ago, and it somehow survived. I've been seeing this huge bush here for at least 14 years, so there's no telling how long it's been there.

Just for comparison, the plant in the above shot is pretty much what everything else around here looks like.

On a funny side note, you can see some people on the top of the cliff in the image. Remember how I said you never see people around here? Well, these folks spotted us from way off in the distance, and were yelling at us, "What's it like down there!"

They started to come down, but when they got halfway all but two turned around and went back. Some people are really lazy, I guess. Especially since most of them were kids! I guess they don't have the sense of adventure that I had at that age.

We stayed until the sunset and watched the ocean waves crash on the shore. I've come to really enjoy doing this every evening somewhere on the beaches of Los Angeles. It's a shame that we've lived here for so long but are only just now starting to go down to the coast regularly.

We've also started collecting a few rocks here and there when we go down. We were thinking about perhaps making some artwork with them. The more likely thing will be that they sit on my counter for a few months until they make their way into a potted plant for decoration. Either way, it's the thought that counts, I guess!

A gorgeous piece of the Earth.. Just as well the kids are lazy, there would be garbage on the beach to spoil the beauty....

Yeah, good point. There is a rocky beach not far from this one that people frequent a lot.. It is covered with trash such as bottles and plastic. It's a shame!

I can't even imagine humidity right now. I am looking out my office window at about three inches of snow! Hopefully they have the main roads cleared by the time I have to go home tonight. These are some awesome pictures. It looks like a beautiful place to visit. I have only seen the Pacific once and I didn't really get to appreciate it because I was stuck in San Francisco all day. I will get back there one day...

Yeah, it seems like everyone is freezing out right now. I talked to my cousins in Dayton and they are getting snow as well. It's been a bit cool here, but not too bad.

Yeah, you should definitely get out this way if you have a chance.

This sort of reminds me of the NW coast beaches I visited, particularly Pacific Rim National Park on Vancouver Island. I lived far inland on the prairie in Alberta at the time, and I was so fascinated by the bull kelp that amassed on shore, I took some home with me! At that time, I did not know it is edible! Harvesting Bullwhip Kelp.
Yes, most people don't venture far from their cars - beyond a 15 minute walk in the park in my neighborhood, you hardly meet anyone, but the parking lot is crowded!

Oh wow! You can eat that stuff? I'll have to check out that link. There is so much of it here that you could eat for years. That is interesting to know. I wonder if the stuff here is the same kind of kelp?
