Ocean Adventure Exhibit

Hi fellow Steemians/ nature enthusiasts,

Today was fun, we went to a local ocean wildlife exhibit in southern New Hampshire in the beautiful coastal town of Rye. I never went to these types of things as a kid so we definitely wanted to share it as a family!

Right out of the gate was seriously the biggest hermit crab I’ve ever seen! I usually see ones that are the size of a marble, at most the size of a crabapple but this damn thing was the size of a baseball! It was huge!

The place had a lot of really cool stuff there about conversation and preserving the environment which was nice. (Don’t let them guilt you too bad, the biggest companies don’t stop selling the stuff, they just guilt you into thinking you’re not doing enough to help the planet) I was intrigued by this cool display talking about what they’re doing in Glasgow Scotland with solar Lilly pads!

There was also a lot about wind energy, though I’m not entirely sold on those massive turbines yet. Seems inefficient.

There was this badass invention from Bangladesh too! It’s a step stair type thing where it shoots water out of the pipe and it’s operated solely by humans instead of burning a fuel or electricity!

Besides that energy stuff there was some cool historical things on scuba gear as well. I didn’t get a chance to read much about it but the items and drawings were cool.

I was certainly not meant to be a scuba diver. My head wouldn’t fit in the helmet! I tried but also didn’t want to get stuck..

The Wildlife

Now for the best part, all the wildlife we saw! Most of it was focused on the local Maine and New Hampshire environment which was nice instead of exotic things. It’s good to be aware of exotics but it’s also perhaps more important to understand the impact we can have on local wildlife. I’m no expert but I think all of it was things you could find in New England waters.

The sea horses were awesome! I haven’t seen one in a wicked long time so I was stoked to see some here. They are amazing little things!

We found out later that the orange lobster was an aggressive little bastard, fighting the other 3 in the tank.

There were also lots of cool coral animals and anemones.

The exhibit wouldn’t be complete without a starfish!

Little school of baitfish. The horseshoe crabs were awesome. I’ve never seen one alive, there’s always dead ones on the shores after the flying rats, er I mean seagulls eat them.

There were a few skates and delicious flounder floating around.

There’s also one of the huge crane birds that the area is famous for. Bit stuffed but still impressive.

The highlight of it for me was this massive damn lobster! The thing had to be 25-30 pounds!

We were hanging out watching it and it wanted to puff it’s chest around a bit so it came out and was waking around. The thing was incredible looking!

The pictures don’t do it much justice, the thing was the size of an adult cat! We heard the worker telling someone it was over 30 years old. Damn ancient for a lobster!

I didn’t care much for the lights on the jellies, it made it hard to photograph but they were pretty awesome.

The last thing was the huge collection of bones and stuff from a whale!

It was an overall awesome trip not too far from us so it was totally worth it. More so because my wife is a coupon queen and got the tickets for free!

Are there local wildlife things like this where you are? I’d love to find out! Local things are awesome, we can watch things on television all day about coral reefs and sharks but local things like this are more tangible and cool to me!
