Ensuring My Girls Get All The Nutrients They Need - Making My Own Seed Mix And Chocolate Balls , Yum

IMG_0331.JPG

I am passionate about food and a strong believer that "You Are What You Eat". I have spend a long time educating myself about food and optimum nutrition. As a mother, my girls depend on the food I give them to grow and develop into healthy adults. I take this responsibility very serious and always make sure that they receive all the nutrients they need.

We eat a very wholesome diet with no animal products and my years of self education have ensured that I know what to feed them so that they get all that they need.

I mostly stay away from processed foods, and like to make my own nut milk and nut butter. The latter is very popular in my home, as my girls love to snack on it. Nut butter and banana yum, or nut butter and dates double yum. But this post is about starting each day on a nutritional boost, so that I know that both my girls and me get the nutrients they need first thing and that we are set for the day.

In the picture about is the seeds and goji berries that I blend weekly to add to our breakfast. Now that it has cooled down we have porridge. Milled seeds can be very expensive, but more than that they will not be as nutritious when you buy already milled, as they are no longer fresh. My seed mix, has linseed, hemp seed, sunflower seed, sesame seed and goji berries. I like to call it my Gold Powder. It is bursting with vitamins, minerals and omegas.

Omegas are so so important for brain development and if a mama is not consuming enough for her breastfeeding baby, they will source it from her brain, hence where the term baby brain comes from. So us breast feeding mama's and children need our daily dose of omegas.

I personally believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially when you are still growing and if you are a breastfeeding mama, like myself. Our breakfast is a ritual onto itself. We like to add our seed mix to our porridge, then buckwheat, coconut oil, carob, banana and my freshly made almond milk. It is a a bowl full of rich nutrients and it tastes so good.

I don't give my girls sugar, well there in none in our truck, but we do love to eat sweet things, so we just make them ourselves. In the jar above is some of the seed mix, along with some dates, some cacao or carob and some coconut oil. We blend them all up and ......

Voila, raw chocolate yumminess, that is inexpensive and nutritious, giving my girls another boost to their day. These are a treat though. My girls mostly snack on fruit and veg such as cucumbers and tomatoes, but we do live in a world where there is an abundance of sugar everywhere! so it is important to look at the alternatives. Dates are such a wonderful natural sweetener.

@naturalmedicine has a wonderful challenge going on at the moment, it is called The Makers Challenge and it is all about making your own version of a store bought product.

So this is my entry, a kind of 2 for one, first my seed mix and then my chocolate goodies. They are both very simple, so there is no reason why you shouldn't try them yourself. I am so excited to see what everyone else shares.

my kids just don't look for them cos I never buy them and they don't crave them, I have seen some kids get very upset when they can't have them, so lucky I never got into that with my girls. They get all the sweetness they need from fruit and the like xxx There is no blue in the balls, think it must be the light reflecting or something xx

What???? No way. I feel such shame being a man sometimes as we really can be dicks!

Over here in the UK most people feed their kids junk food and don't even understand the implications of what they are doing. They see it as normal, coz everyone else does it.

Preparing high nutrient food with a tasty flavour takes time. And not too many people are prepared to put in the extra work. But you clearly do. So, just ignore the man & keep doing what you're doing ;)

Big hugz x

You and I have so much in common. I would have loved to have you as a community member in our intentional community. Anyway, we eat like this too and I'm striving to grow at least 90% of our food. We aren't there yet but slowly getting there. ;) This is awesome and inspiring. Thanks for sharing.

Mnnnnn those chocy things look yum!

I remember buying something very similar when I was in Tulum in Mexico. Some of the volunteers in the hostel I stayed at made them every day and sold them around the town to supplement their income.... Well, they sold whatever I didn't buy and scoff 😂

When I got diagnosed with SIBO, I got into the habit of making my own versions of various store bought staples instead of buying processed foods. It hasn't solved the health issues but it's much cheaper and must be doing some good health wise.

Interesting challenge. I might join in with my crazy bagels or some other more healthy bake 😉

Oh Tulum, I was there about 18 years ago, was so beautiful, hear it is much more built up now. You should get involved with the challenge, I'd love to learn from the gangster Baker lol xxx

Oh Tulum, I was there about 18 years ago, was so beautiful, hear it is much more built up now.

Yeah, unfortunately it is built up and there is now a bunch of private beaches attached to resorts... but there is still a public beach that is out of this world. And the nearby cenotes are amazing.

I visited during turtle season and snuck on to the beach with a little pop up tent and an LED turtle safe torch and watched the turtles nesting. Someone told me that the people who run tours to watch them would have tried to get me arrested if they saw me, as it seems some idiots a while back were disturbing the turtles.

I have to be honest though, I think they'd be trying to get people arrested simply because they want everyone to pay for their tours. Although I loved Tulum, there was some ugliness from the lure of the tourist dollar.

I've been interested in conservation since I was 4 years old and know exactly how to observe turtles without disturbing them... pitched my tent well back in the dunes, kept quiet, kept well back from the nesting turtle while observing it and used a LED torch etc. I even marked the nest sites for reference just as the sun rose, once the turtles had left the beach. A few hours later a 'conservation representative' turned up early and seemed confused by the sticks laying on the ground. The two reps removed my markers and then a group turned up and they spent the morning finding the nests from the turtle tracks and marking them with fences. I had a long talk with one of the reps later and kind of understand where they're coming from. All those people had paid money to join in the conservation activities, and this was partly helping to fund the ongoing protection of the area, plus increasing local people's income, which is cool. The lady I talked to admitted that it is a bit of a circus at times and was sympathetic to me wanting to have an authentic experience, but she reiterated what others had told me that I could be arrested for camping on that part of the beach, as it was protected.

Ha ha, the whole thing amused me as there was a beach rave 2 days before about a mile down the beach at one of the resorts, which must have been disturbing to the nesting turtles. But the police weren't hounding them not to have beach parties during nesting season because the resorts are a cash cow.

I only spent one night camping there as I didn't want to end up in Mexican jail 🤣 I did hike and camp in a place called holbox later on that trip which was much more chilled out. That was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I was basically wandering about with a compass observing nature and snorkeling until about 2pm each day, then I'd hike back to holbox and eat a tone of food then wander back into the wild and find a deserted spot near to a beach and pitch up. Up each day with the sunrise, nothing to complain about... other than sand flies lol. It was a real adventure 🙂

I use a similar mix but put it in a smoothie with blueberries, moringa powder, pumpkin seeds and cacao nibs ground with some stevia to sweeten it. M-m-m! I use my sesame seed in my salad dressing and I had never heard of eating the linseed - I always think of it as linseed oil for rubbing into wood carvings and such. I'll have to check them out! And yes! always good to have a natural sweet treat!
Thanks for sharing!

oh your mix sounds delicious, I would like to try that. Linseed is full of omegas and also makes a great egg re-placer in cakes, you mill it and add water and leave it to sit for 10 minutes works really well xxx

Awesome! Thanks for the tip - always good to know what you can use for an egg replacer!
