Eleven thousand chemical laden tampons?

Ever wondered just how many tampons or sanitary pads a woman flushes away in her lifetime?
Does 11 000 sound possible or even probable?

What do these products do to the environment plus to our bodies?
Not sure, was my answer.

What goes into these intimate products we as women use during our reproductive years?

  • Up to 90% plastic - bad for the environment as well as the skin as it cannot breathe, making it the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.
  • Fragrance and dyes causes skin irritation.
  • Chlorine creates the harmful by-product Dioxin which disrupts hormones and can lead to cancer, causes reproductive and developmental problems and damages the immune system. Dioxin is one of the POPs Persistent Organic Pollutants which can remain in the environment for many many years.

Hearing all of this makes me really uncomfortable knowing THAT was probably the cause of many discomforts over the years - I certainly would not like to be putting all kinds of harmful chemicals inside my body - pesticides, chlorine, fragrance and bleaches; yet we do this month after month without even blinking twice.

We scrutinise food ingredients lists, but have we ever given a thought to scrutinising what goes into our tampons?

What to look for

  • Rayon
  • Dioxin
  • Non-organic cotton
  • Fragrance
  • Chlorine
  • BPA

When choosing tampons, look out that they're made with certified organic cotton, free from pesticides. It may say 100% cotton, but cotton is the world's most heavily sprayed crop!
Edit to my post
After reading comments from @artemislives and @juliakponsford; the menstrual cup or mooncup is way more eco-friendly.

We all know that Toxic Shock Syndrome can be fatal and it’s not just from leaving tampons in too long. Synthetic additives makes tampons more absorbent which increases the risk of toxic shock syndrome.

Having said goodbye to the monthly curse many moons ago following surgery, I never gave any of the above a second thought when I was using them; how ignorant was I!

After receiving these sample products from a fabulous organic and eco-friendly online store, I wondered just how many of us are being hoodwinked by the big industries.

So I remembered reading a real funny letter a long time ago; it's written by a very cheesed-off lady to the brand manager of Proctor & Gamble. It was shared on the site McSweenys where it sits with many other

letters written to people or entities who are unlikely to respond.

Dear Mr. Thatcher,
I have been a loyal user of your Always maxi pads for over 20 years, and I appreciate many of their features. Why, without the LeakGuard Core™ or Dri-Weave™ absorbency, I’d probably never go horseback riding or salsa dancing, and I’d certainly steer clear of running up and down the beach in tight, white shorts. But my favorite feature has to be your revolutionary Flexi-Wings. Kudos on being the only company smart enough to realize how crucial it is that maxi pads be aerodynamic. I can’t tell you how safe and secure I feel each month knowing there’s a little F-16 in my pants.
Have you ever had a menstrual period, Mr. Thatcher? Ever suffered from “the curse”? I’m guessing you haven’t. Well, my “time of the month” is starting right now. As I type, I can already feel hormonal forces violently surging through my body. Just a few minutes from now, my body will adjust and I’ll be transformed into what my husband likes to call “an inbred hillbilly with knife skills.” Isn’t the human body amazing?
As brand manager in the feminine-hygiene division, you’ve no doubt seen quite a bit of research on what exactly happens during your customers’ monthly visits from Aunt Flo. Therefore, you must know about the bloating, puffiness, and cramping we endure, and about our intense mood swings, crying jags, and out-of-control behavior. You surely realize it’s a tough time for most women. In fact, only last week, my friend Jennifer fought the violent urge to shove her boyfriend’s testicles into a George Foreman Grill just because he told her he thought Grey’s Anatomy was written by drunken chimps. Crazy! The point is, sir, you of all people must realize that America is just crawling with homicidal maniacs in capri pants. Which brings me to the reason for my letter.
Last month, while in the throes of cramping so painful I wanted to reach inside my body and yank out my uterus, I opened an Always maxi pad, and there, printed on the adhesive backing, were these words: “Have a Happy Period.”
Are you fncking kidding me?
What I mean is, does any part of your tiny middle-manager brain really think happiness—actual smiling, laughing happiness—is possible during a menstrual period? Did anything mentioned above sound the least bit pleasurable? Well, did it, James? FYI, unless you’re some kind of sick S&M freak girl, there will never be anything “happy” about a day in which you have to jack yourself up on Motrin and Kahlúa and lock yourself in your house just so you don’t march down to the local Walgreens armed with a hunting rifle and a sketchy plan to end your life in a blaze of glory. For the love of God, pull your head out, man. If you just have to slap a moronic message on a maxi pad, wouldn’t it make more sense to say something that’s actually pertinent, like “Put Down the Hammer” or “Vehicular Manslaughter Is Wrong”? Or are you just picking on us?
Sir, please inform your accounting department that, effective immediately, there will be an $8 drop in monthly profits, for I have chosen to take my maxi-pad business elsewhere. And though I will certainly miss your Flexi-Wings, I will not for one minute miss your brand of condescending bullshit. And that’s a promise I will keep. Always.
Best,
Wendi Aarons, Austin, TX

I would recommend using a menstrual cup, all that waste really is a pity, not to mention expensive as well.

Totes. I've not used a tampon since probably 1993.

Thank you so very much for that bit of advice @juliakponsford, being an oldie I've never heard of this before;) Edited my post slightly to include it.

Mooncup all the way!! Cotton is also a seriously destructive form of mono-crop farming, even if it's organic.

The biggest concern with fragranced products is not so much drying of the skin (although duh, how harmful is that?! But wait a minute, now we can sell you petrochemical lubricants too, so maybe it's intentional) but that most of these fragrances are serious ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS and mimic estrogen in the body. When you appreciate that the vast majority of cancers are estrogen dependent, you start to see the real issue.

#naturalproducts would have been a relevant and important tag to give exposure to this issue.

Gosh, thank you for this information, I had never heard of the mooncup, edited my post slightly and added the suggested tag. I usually do food blogging so am not familiar with these tags, really appreciate the support of the @ecotrain community;)

Moon cup all the way!! I've had the same one for 16 years now, and never bought another tampon again. I love it. This post reminds me why I did it.

This is such an important post, it has always sadden me the amount of toxins that people put in their bodies and how they are so reluctant to ask questions and research, such a lack of self care. I have been using a moon cup for years now xx

I've been so ignorant on this issue but it's great to hear that the new generation are becoming more aware of it, very important that we talk about this! Thanks for popping in @trucklife-family!

Oh my goodness, all I can say is this is shocking @lizelle!!!! My daughters have been telling me this for years, but that doesn't help those of us who have utilized the "commercial" products sold to us for years and years. I shudder to think the impact on our bodies. Wow! This kind of information should be shared everywhere, thank you, so appreciate this post!

So true, our generation were not made aware of this, good to hear more and more young women are knowledgeable on the subject. The big industries really only care about profits and not about what their products are doing to its consumers!

Great article lizelle. Cambodia is horrible when it comes to options but I just ordered washable absorbing underware to try as I am not a huge fan of the menstrual cup. Let's see how that goes.

I've heard of that, I think the mooncup would not be my favourite either! One thing I don't miss about my younger years;);)
Thanks for adding your comments here.

Reading this post brings back up the anger all over again. It was too late for me when I found out what these chemicals do to our bodies. I have had endocrine problems and pains since my early twenties and I KNOW it came from using commercial pads. I now use the brand you mentioned in your post (Natracare) which I get from our local health food store.

It sickens me thinking about all of the harsh materials and chemicals they use on something that will go inside or stay right against our most vulnerable area. If only I knew this before years of wearing this toxic stuff. At least I can prevent my daughters from experiencing the same fate as me. They will only know of natural products to use for their feminine hygiene and not commercial chemicals.

This needs to be shared with many. Thank you for getting this awareness out!

Gosh that's so bad @crosheille! I'm so sorry to hear about that, at least there is more awareness on this issue now. Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks @lizelle! Yes it is very unfortunate but I am glad there is more awareness and now we can help others from going through these types of conditions :)
