PEACEFUL BEAUTY

In 2005, near this spot on Indian Island, Riverhead, NY, two Indian burials were uncovered. Archaeologists dated them from the Early Woodland period of 800 B.C. to A.D. 800.

The remains were charred burnt pieces from cremation along with a small pot and pipe. The cremation indicated the tradition that preceded the Early Woodland, These burials must have been during a tradition period where cremation was ending.

Local Native people where notified of the discovery. Elizabeth Thunderbird Haile a now deceased Shinnecock Indian leader was much appreciated to Town and County leaders for reaching out to the Island's Native Americans.

It was advised to rebury the remains in a nearby place. Indian burials were placed in beautiful spaces like the islands at the head of an estuary, or on the highest hills nearby.
