Review of the Argentine film "The Odyssey of the Giles"
English-speaking audiences don't like to watch movies in other languages very much. Most don't like to be reading subtitles. I suggest you try to see more movies spoken in a language other than English. You will discover excellent films that will broaden your knowledge of other cultures. That's why I decided to present you with this review of an Argentinean film that is only a few months old.
The Odyssey of the Giles, an Argentine film that was well received in your country. Abroad, it has been nominated for the Goya Awards, the biggest award in Spanish cinema, in the category of best Ibero-American film.
What is the film's history?
Set in 2001, in a small town in Argentina, a group of friends decide to add up all the dollars they have saved to form a cooperative. A kind of collective enterprise where everyone is an owner. They plan to reactivate and work with some old companies that have been closed for several years.The corrupt bank manager will trick them into leaving all the money in a bank account so they can get a quick loan. But it's all a lie. The manager already knew that a great tragedy was about to happen. In December 2001, a banking crisis breaks out in Argentina. Thousands of people lose all their savings. The bankers escape and the government intervenes, limiting the amount each citizen can withdraw. Among the victims are our protagonists, who will be devastated. But soon the fate that has taken so much from them will give them a chance to get their money back. It is time for them to take revenge against the system and the people who ruined them. The great odyssey of the Giles is about to begin.
What does Giles mean?
For the English speaking public, he can be defined as a hardworking, honest, always willing to help and big-hearted person. A type of person increasingly difficult to find in this ruthless world.
The film is a comedy that can be enjoyed with the family. I liked it very much. It's a light comedy that has a nice message of unity. Where teamwork, between different people, can be achieved. Each character has a different personality, but all of them are defined by the desire to progress, companionship, cooperation, love and true friendship. This type of film is necessary. Our minds need to get rid of so many negative things that affect us in our daily lives. Watching and enjoying a movie like The Giles' Odyssey gives us hope that this world can be changed. There are more of us good people. Let's not let the evil ones win.
The stuff's great. The best-known face is that of the actor Ricardo Darin. He's the one who plays the leader of that group of friends. Darin is a great actor recognized in many parts of the world. Argentina and Spain is where he has been most famous. He was the protagonist of the film El Secreto de sus Ojos, which was nominated for an Oscar several years ago. Hollywood made a remake of that movie, starring Julia Roberts. In the Giles' Odyssey, his son, Chinese Darin, also plays the role. This being the first time that father and son acted together in a production. I'm sure he will follow in his father's footsteps and be a big star in the future.
