Alternative Weekend: Unconvinced by some of the heavy stuff

This was inspired by a @slobberchops post about artists he is not convinced by.

I have fairly broad musical tastes that span folk, jazz, pop, metal, prog and more. If it moves me then it is okay and I do not worry too much about what genre it will be filed under. I tend to struggle with some of the heavier stuff, but that is okay as there is plenty of other music to listen to. That does not mean I do not have a listen.

If you love these bands then please do not take this as me slagging them off. I am interested to hear about what they mean to you and maybe you can suggest tracks I may like. I will listen. You can say what you like about bands I am into. That will not affect how I feel about them.

Slipknot

I know these guys have a massive, dedicated following. I just watched a BBC documentary (may not be available outside the UK) that included a live performance in a studio. It gave me a little background on them, but it is the music that matters. They have tremendous energy and so I can see why people enjoy their live shows. I might even enjoy it myself, but based on this performance I would not be rushing to buy their albums. That says more about me than them. I will not generally say music is bad (unless it really is terrible) as we each have our own tastes and who am I to criticise thousands of fans of a band I do not enjoy?

They only track I have by them is Psychosocial that was on a compilation. Listening to it now I do like some aspects of it. They have some interesting guitar sounds in there and the chorus is more my thing.

Motionless in White

This is a band I have seen live. My daughter has been quite into metal and she was going to see them with a friend who could not go on the day, so I went with her as she was still quite young. There was a support of a band fronted by the main guy from Cradle of Filth who did not do much for me. Then it was a double headliner with Lacuna Coil. I liked some of their tunes, but I have not looked much into their back catalogue. Motionless In White themselves were predictably loud and heavy, but perhaps because I did not know the songs it mostly washed over me. Meanwhile the crowd were loving them. Listening to studio recordings I can get it a bit more as you can hear what is going on, including some of the lyrics. Growly vocals do not float my boat.

I will say that there seemed to be distinct parts of the audience for the two main bands and I am not sure how much of a crossover there was.

Ozzy Osbourne

I cannot deny that this guy was part of the birth of metal through Black Sabbath, but I cannot get past his voice on the solo stuff. He is not going to care about my opinion as he sits in his mansion surrounded with gold/platinum discs and many awards.

Life is finite, so find the music you love and do not waste time of what does not bring you joy.

Rock on!

I caught part of that Slipknot docco. I cant get into this stuff either, there seems little rhythm but the masks are kind of different. 9 blokes in a band is a lot!

If I could catch hold of one of there tracks it might get me in but its not happened yet. They are a little different than the rest though.

I think you need to be in the right mood for some music. There's a Miles Davis documentary that was on last night that I may watch soon. Talk about contrast.

There's an amazing amount of docco's on YouTube. Just pick your artist and you can generally find something. The history behind bands, the fights, the reshuffles, and the music I find really interesting.

Even better if I know little about the artist. You can learn a lot and sometimes get into the music as they tend to promote the better songs.

I was listening to what the Slipknot guys were saying more than their music a few nights ago.

There are some good ones on Netflix too. The one on Rush was informative as I don't know much about them. I am willing to give different bands a go as I said. Sometimes I find something I really like.

Not a fan of Slipknot. I have never really understood the appeal of Korn either. They feel really one dimensional to me.

There's plenty of music out there that does nothing for me, but has devoted fans. It can be for many reasons and they are not always just about the music.
