“Music is My Passion, and Here are Some Cool Songs” by Richard F. Yates

[Digital drawing. 2020.]

Some of you may know that I’ve started making “pirate radio shows” and uploading them to DSound.io (for fun.) I love music. I’ve been a music collector since I was a little kid (still have some of my cassettes from when I was 11 years old---and that was a LOOOOONG time ago…), and I started DJing back in the ‘80s. I’ve worked at two different record stores, spent several years studying music related subcultures (as a cultural anthropology student), and I still have to DJ the occasional wedding for some young whipper-snapper, although I usually only do it for family members or friends’ kids…or friends of friends…now-o-days, for free... (I’m a SHITTY businessman.)

But I still LOVE music. Music non-stop. Music in the car, music while I’m showering, music when I’m writing or drawing, and music (playing quietly) while I sleep. All the time. I have thousands of CDs, hundreds of records (I’m down to about eight milk-crates worth, since I lost a bunch in one of our far-too-frequent moves…but that’s the life of a SPY! Always on the go!), and over 30,000 digital tracks on the computer. (My favorite present, whatever the holiday, is a gift card for buying more music.)

I DON’T like streaming services, especially the ones that make you pay a monthly fee to use their services, partially because a LOT of the music I like isn’t available on those services, but MOSTLY it’s because you don’t actually OWN anything with that type of set-up. You pay to listen, but when you STOP paying, they take everything away from you. Drop a hundred bucks for a year of fancy streaming services, and you can listen all you like. Stop paying…you’ve got nothing but memories.

I like to own my tunes. I pay. I HOPE that most of the money I spend makes its way to the artists who CREATED the music (and not just to the distributor where I bought the music.)

And that’s my music rant for the day… Meanwhile, here are the songs that I’ve played on my pirate radio shows, so far…

Every Song That I’ve Played, So Far, on my Punkatronic Pirate Radio Shows!

That’s what I’ve played so far (plus some talking from me, mostly about when the songs came out and where I found them. I’m really thinking of this as something akin to a “mix tape” project. I’m just playing some of the songs that I’m enjoying at the moment…) If you want to listen to the actual episodes, here are the links:

I’m HOPING to get another show recorded in the next few days. I haven’t got the FOGGIEST idea what I’m going to play, yet, but that’s half the fun.

I’ve also considered pulling some of my favorite 7” singles out and photographing them. (Seven inch singles are LITTLE records, the kind that sometimes have the BIG hole in the middle, and they’re also known as 45s, as they are usually---but not always---played at 45 rpms [revolutions per minute] instead of the 33 rpms of “long play” records, which are usually bigger… Do you care??? I don’t know, but I’m also assuming that not everyone has SEEN a real record-player anymore…) I have some INTERESTING 45s, colored vinyl, weird bands, that kind of stuff, and I thought it might make an interesting post to show you folks these old, weird things! What do you think?? Sound fun? Let me know!!!

Later skaters!!!

Podcasting is definitely a good way to so something more than just listening, when loving music so much as you apparently do. At first I though, I don't recognise any name on the list, what kinda of music he plays? And then when looked again, I felt stupid :) Some damn cool names you have there!

Love it when you say: My favorite present, whatever the holiday, is a gift card for buying more music.

Though I like music a lot as well, my collection of records/CDs is much, much smaller than yours. I do use services like Spotify, but actually listen a lot to MixCloud and SoundCloud, either mixes by my favourite or unknown artists, or their work at their own pages. Spotify I have to be able to listen to music everywhere I go. And yes, its a temp service, ie when not paying anymore, no media that I can touch. Not sure what is better for the artists these days, their earning from streaming services, digital selling, or through CDs, Vinyls (niche). I think only the big names earn very good. The small names, releases music for marketing mainly. Some of my friends (producers and DJs), get a lot of the music from services like Beatport and sell their stuff over there as well. They give a larger percentage of the sell to the artists. Also Bandcamp is increasing in popularity as far as I understand.

Success with you next one.

I've purchased a few things from Beatport, usually techno remixes, and I love bandcamp. Good way to support smaller / indie artists. And yeah, I know I'm from a different time. My daughters are both happy to listen to Pandora or the radio or even YouTube playlists. They are happy to EXPERIENCE the music without feeling the need to OWN it. Though we all love music!

Thanks for the comment!

Hmm though I'm of an somewhat older age as well, I think I made the transformation to the 'new' world of streaming music. I dont feel the need to own to be honest. Create for me I suppose :) Fun fact: for instance the whole world thought Vinyl would stop to exist, but more and more people I know who produces music (electronic of nature), releasing some of their tracks as a limited edition on Vinyl, for all those who like to own something :) And I get that! :)
