It's Never Too Late To Learn Something New

avatar

As I briefly mentioned in my first post this year, I started taking guitar classes exactly one month ago now and I wanted to share what I learned from it, not just when it comes to playing that specific instrument but also about life, hobbies and passion.

Guitar is one of those instruments I've always loved the sound of but I never even thought of one day learning how to play. As a kid, growing up on the countryside, we didn't really have many options when it comes to practicing hobbies or learning new skills. Also the way my parents grew up never involved taking kids to some sort of classes, trainings or anything of that kind. I definitely regret not having that part of my life fulfilled as a kid and as time passed by, I never really felt passionate about anything to that point I would do something about it as a teenager and now, as an adult (except Zumba).
So when we got the opportunitiy to apply for free classes in this small place where I live, I was still thinking weather I should apply or not. But my curiosity was bigger than my doubt and I decided to give it a try. It was only for 5-6 weeks with one class each week. My fear kicked in again with every thought about the concert we are having at the end because any type of public performance or attention gives me anxiety and sometimes even panic attacks. As I'm writing this (on Sunday), we only have two days left until the concert (on Tuesday).
This week I went almost every day to the library, where we have our classes, to practice since the guitars are there. I even have my favorite guitar that I've been playing on since the first class, I think. And not only did I go to practice, but I also went because I knew this little musical adventure will be over soon and I honestly don't know when I'll have the opportunity to hold a guitar in my hands again. But I'm definitely planning on getting one as soon as I can.

Things I've learned from this experience:

1. Age does not matter when you want to learn

As long as there is some interest, willingness and passion about something, it's never too late to give it a go. You don't have to become a professional or turn it into a business/income, it can just be a hobby, a form of relaxation or just a way to keep learning and growing as a person. Learning does not end with formal education and hobbies can be pursued any time.

2. Practice makes perfect

A lot of times I thought that for certain things talent is the biggest part of someone's success - sports, music, acting... Of course, I knew that there is a lot of time, effort and practice involved but now I'm pretty sure that working hard, being consistent and learning from all kinds of different resources we have available in this time and age is more important than talent. Someone can be talented naturally, but if that talent is not shaped and worked on, it can never get to its full potential.

3. Great things do not come from our comfort zones

Stepping out of our comfort zone can be uncomfortable, fearful thing but it also brings us the most memorable moments and the most valuable lessons. I am aware of my fear of public performances and even though I am trying to tell myself everything is going to be okay, that uncomfortable feeling is still there. Now looking back, I would still choose to go through this rather than not having the guitar experience at all. This fear made me practice a little bit extra, because I want to be as confident as I can possibly be for the concert. Now, I am pretty sure I will do a good job at the concert and even if I mess up somewhere along the way, it won't be the end of the world.

4. The joy of taking a new challenge and the confidence boost that it brings

This is all about that feeling of new knowledge, learning something new and conquering a new challenge. And if you get a few compliments for it, your confidence will definitely increase or if you just feel that confidence within yourself for everything you've acomplished. Everytime I learn something new, it can just be a random fact about a certain topic, a few words in a foreign language, a new skill... - I also feel grateful for just being able to learn, for my brain to be able to memorize or my body for being able to do something.

Overall, this was a great experience that I will always remember and I am sad that is coming to an end but I am hopeful that something like this will be organized again. I will definitely keep my eye on similar projects, workshops... I would love to hear from you: is there something you've always wanted to learn or just dedicate more time to it? Let me know in the comments. Thank you for reading and have a wonderful day! :)

I found someone to help teach me something too. Have to go outside your comfort zone to progress as an individual. You gonna record any songs for us?

We're only learning "Ode to Joy" for the performance and then, unfortunately, we won't have access to the guitars. :( I'm sure we're going to have some videos of our performance but I'm not sure if I will post them. :)) Maybe when I get my own guitar and learn to play something.

Thank you so much!
Good luck, I like how there's one physical thing and one where it's just learning, both challenging in their own ways. :)

I hope you get a guitar once the concert is over.
Do you sing too?
Playing and singing are important parts of my life, even when I'm not using them to make money.
The guitar is such a wonderful creative tool!

I don't sing. I don't know how to explain this but my voice is very quiet, even when I'm talking, I can't really scream or shout, my voice would be gone or just break. I hope it makes sense, haha.

The guitar is such a wonderful creative tool!

True! I just scratched the surface during these classes and I'm excited to learn more! :)
