2005 For What It´s Worth

Das Debüt-Album der Band überzeugt noch heute mit seinem rauen, ehrlichen Sound, der sehr old school daher kommt, ohne viel Spielereien. Der Drummer treibt wie die Hölle, daher höre ich die Platte gerne beim joggen.

Gewiss kein Prunkstück in der Musik-Historie, man hört durchaus, dass hier eine Gruppe von Teenagern ihre ersten Gehversuche als Band unternimmt. Gemessen daran ist das Ergebnis doch akzeptabel, auch wenn STYG das wohl heute anders sehen.

The debut album of the band still convinces today with its rough, honest sound, which comes very old school therefore, without much gimmicks. The drummer is driving like hell, so I like to listen to the record while jogging.

Certainly not a showpiece in the history of music, you can hear that a group of teenagers are making their first steps as a band. Judging by that, the result is acceptable, even though STYG may see it differently today.

2008 Comes from the Heart

Ein insgesamt würdiger Nachfolger des Debüt-Albums von 2005 mit einigen Highlights. In Gänze betrachtet fällt es aber doch leicht ab, so dass es für mich das schwächste aller Studioalben darstellt – das ist hier aber jammern auf hohem Niveau, denn das schwächste STYG-Album ist immer noch um Welten besser als das Beste so manch andere Band.

An altogether worthy successor of the debut album of 2005 with some highlights. On the whole, though, it turns out to be slightly weaker, making it the weakest of all the studio albums for me - but this is whining at a high level, because the weakest STYG album is still worlds better than the best of many other bands.

2010 The Hope Division

Das berühmt-berüchtigte dritte Studioalbum hat schon so mancher Band den Todesstoss versetzt. Man sagt sich im Music-Biz, die ersten beiden Alben dienen nur der Vorbereitung, das dritte entscheidet über Sieg oder Abgesang. STYG schaffen den Sprung in die Profiliga und liefern ein erwachsenes Monster ab, durch dass sie ab sofort mit der Elite mitmischen.

The infamous third studio album has already put many a band to death. It is said in the music-Biz, the first two albums serve only the preparation, the third decides about victory or swan song. STYG make the leap into the professional league and deliver an adult monster, through which they now mix with the elite.

2012 Diamond

Das wohl populärste Werk der Kalifornier und das völlig zurecht. Mit Diamond gelingt ein Meisterstück, mit der sich die Band ein Denkmal in der internationalen Hardcore-Szene setzt. Wie so viele bin auch ich zu dieser Zeit auf STYG aufmerksam geworden, als sie gerade mit Boysetsfire auf Tour waren.

Probably the most popular work of the Californians and quite rightly so. With Diamond, a masterpiece with which the band sets a memorial in the international hardcore scene succeeds. Like so many, I became aware of STYG at the time when they were touring with Boysetsfire.

2015 Disobedient

Die Erwartungen an den Diamond-Nachfolger waren gewiss enorm, das Ergebnis dafür erneut brilliant. Wenig Spielereien, ein Schritt zurück zum Old School-Sound, Track für Track mitten auf die Zwölf. Das gefällt und macht Lust auf mehr.

The expectations of the Diamond successor were certainly enormous, the result again brilliant. Little gadgets, a step back to the old school sound, track by track in the middle of the Twelve. That pleases and makes you want more.

2016 Better Ash Than Dust

Eine kleine 5-Track EP, um die Wartezeit auf das nächste Studio-Album zu verkürzen. Die Top 3 erübrigen sich an dieser Stelle, der Song „Universal Language“ ist mein persönlicher Favorit. Ein in sich stimmiges und hörenswertes Machwerk.

A small 5-track EP to shorten the waiting time for the next studio album. The top 3 are unnecessary at this point, the song "Universal Language" is my personal favorite. A coherent and worth listening work.

2017 True View

Kann man bei Hardcore von Mainstream sprechen? Falls ja, sind Stick To Your Guns mit „True View“ wohl in diesem angekommen. Man könnte auch sagen, sie sind erwachsen geworden oder auf ihrem Zenit angekommen. Nicht mehr ganz so wütend, alles etwas melodischer und mit mehr cleanen Parts. Aber das macht nun mal auch langfristigen Erfolg einer Band aus, sich öfter neu zu erfinden und mit der Zeit zu gehen.

Und es hat einen guten Grund, dass True View so erwachsen klingt. Sänger Jesse Barnett verarbeitet Familiendrama und Trennungsschmerz und das spiegelt sich sowohl in den Texten als auch im Sound wieder.

Can one speak of hardcore in mainstream? If so, Stick To Your Guns with "True View" have probably arrived in this one. One could also say that they have grown up or arrived at their zenith. Not so angry anymore, everything a bit more melodic and with more clean parts. But that also makes long-term success of a band, to reinvent more often and to move with the times.

And there's a good reason that True View sounds so grown up. Singer Jesse Barnett handles family drama and separation pain and this is reflected in the lyrics as well as the sound.
