“Solid Potato Salad” by The Ross Sisters … (Comedy / Camp – Music to Your Ears, Mock’n’Roll–23)

The quaint song and dance are abandoned in favor of some impressive acrobatics and contortionism.

The Ross Sisters – “Solid Potato Salad”

“Solid Potato Salad” (1944)

This song is from the 1944 musical film “Broadway Rhythm,”  which was a sequel of sorts to several previous films, starting in 1929, each titled “Broadway Melody.”  By 1944, it seems the filmmakers’ creative juices had pretty much run dry.

Hungry for More

At first, this song doesn’t have much to offer us, apart from its campy performance. There’s only some uncreative music, some pointless lyrics, and some vapid prancing – not to mention the mediocre melodrama and the weak comedy in the intro.

Fortunately, the sisters stop singing within 2 minutes. Then, we are treated to some very impressive acrobatics.

But how all that is related to potato salad is anybody’s guess.   (Image source)

The Ross Sisters

The Ross Sisters was a US trio comprising 3 siblings known for their singing, dancing, and contortionist gymnastics.

Contorting for Royals

In the early 1940s, the trio became popular for their acrobatics. Their performance in “Broadway Rhythm”  brought the sisters broader appeal, and they subsequently performed throughout the US.

In late 1944, they moved on to Europe. In 1946, they performed for King George VI at the London Palladium.

Is it Entertainment?

In 1994, some of their scenes from “Broadway Rhythm”  were featured in the MGM documentary “That's Entertainment! III.”   (Image source)

Solid potato salad
That's solid salad, Jack
Solid potato salad, boy
Take a plate, fill it up
And bring it right back!

Solid potato salad
And let's have no yak-yak!
Solid potato salad, boy
Take a plate, fill it up
And bring it right back!

The farmer said to the spud
"You're skin looks mighty pallid
So I'll dig you later, bud
For some solid … potato salad!"

Hoy hoy!
