'Sit' - New Original Music - A 5 Minute Writing Exercise - Electronic/Instrumental + Walkthrough
Earlier this week I did a quick
five minute songwriting exercise (or challenge, hehe), and this was the result. I wound up wasting about 3 minutes playing around with Serum, which resulted in the song idea only being 3 tracks, but I actually like it quite a bit, and was thinking I should try and expand on this, add some new ideas so it's not just a repeating loop and make a little more interesting. In Track 1, I was initially playing with having various warp parameters change as the velocity changed, and writing a sort of bass part, but I kind of abandoned that, after deciding to go with a chordal thing instead. So, I quickly tried to make a nicer sound, and I think overall, I dig it here. I played the line pictured below, chords with the ascending thing on the top, and recorded that into Track 2, as my copy of Serum is a demo and would require restarting after 20 minutes, losing any progress on the actual patch. I then took those two bar sections and reversed them in Track 3; this back and forth between the two tracks turned out way cooler than I imagined. Reversing is one of those easy tricks that can either make something terrible, or immediately make it 10 times cooler. Finally, I added Track 4 before running out of time, a ROLI synth which just plays a little melody. There is an interesting move at the end of the melody, from E to Eb, since we're in Eb minor. That was a happy accident, where I misplaced that note, but really liked the tension and release there in those 7th and 8th bars of each repetition.
