'Roop' - New Original Music - A Random Idea From Last Night - Electronic/Instrumental + Walkthrough
This wasn't going to be a song, and started
just as a session for me to mess around with some loops, and try and go through some sounds in my library I haven't used before. I wound up making a little drum pattern (with Ableton's Simpler, specifically using the Slice tool again), and then added a Portal effect to it. I played around with that for quite a while, and got something pretty cool, which I recorded to Track 1. I figured I'd just play around with other stuff with that pattern, and added Track 2, which is one of the LABS textural pads. I distorted it with Melda Production's (free) bitcrusher, and then compressed it pretty hard, and mapped out the little progression pictured to the right here. I was imagining this being in D minor initially, though as it kept repeating, I decided to have it be in Bb major, so the D would work as the iii/III (depending on the harmonies I added around it), which I think turned out to be cooler than just a more basic minor progression in D minor.
Track 4, ROLI bass w/ ROLI effects

Track 3 was another LABS instrument, the mandolin, which
wound up getting distorted and then reversed, just to add some background textures. It's not super obvious, so if I decide to really dive into this idea, that may go. Track 4 is a ROLI bass synth, which plays two different progressions, so the repeating progression in Track 2 winds up feeling different every other repetition. It also has a bunch of effects on it, including a pretty heavy phaser, so I'll need to spend some time mixing it, as it gets a bit too intense at a few points, drowning out other things. After adding all these tracks, I figured another layer of drums, just for kicks and snares, might help, so I added Track 5. The levels are a bit low, but I think the general idea is there, so I'll play around with it, see if I can get everything to fit together a bit better. Finally, I added Track 6, one of the 'pluck' synths from ROLI, which plays some 1/16th note arpeggios, pictured to the left. I'll play around with this tonight, and see if I can't turn it into more of a song, and less of just a play-around session.
Hope you enjoy!
