I was a bit bored the other night,

Track 1, LABS Textural Pad
and decided to do a timed writing challenge/exercise, but gave myself 15 minutes, instead of the 5 or 10 of the last few I've done. Fifteen is plenty of time to actually try things out, but it's also sort of deceptively short, so I had to keep myself from just spacing out and exploring all kinds of sound libraries without actually writing anything, lol. I started with an Ableton wavetable synth, which is recorded in Track 2, and plays through a Dmaj, F#min, Gmaj, and Emin, before repeating. Then, this same line plays, but in reverse, in Track 3, back and forth. I then picked out one of the 'Textural Pads' from Spitfire LABS, which is in Track 1, and outlines the chord movements, with a few extra little bits to give it a little more of a melodic feeling. It plays over both the forward and reversed parts, though I didn't record this to audio and reverse it; I figured having it continue with the same sound would help make things a little more cohesive.

Track 4, Izotope Iris Instrument

Listen to Back Word here...

Track 4 was the next addition, and I figured I needed to

Track 5, LABS Modular Piano
avoid using another LABS instrument, as I've been using them constantly lately, so I dropped in the Izotope Iris, which I had gotten for free during some random promotion a few months ago. There are some cool presets in it, though some of them I really dislike, but it has a lot of greats effects and settings, and allows you to really tweak your own sounds/samples. This track uses the 'Artificial Voices' instrument, which has a cool, sort of reversed swell to it, which worked well with the previous instruments. Track 5 uses another LABS instrument (I avoided it for one track, haha), from the Modular Pianos set, which just accents a very sparse points with a little 4 note line. Track 6 is a Spitfire instrument (not LABS though) from the Alex Lenz pack, which was also supposed to be used really sparsely, but I guess I accidentally dropped the volume, cause it isn't super audible here. Finally, we have Track 8, which is the one track I don't like at all, though I was out of time and figured I'd leave it. This is another Iris instrument, and adds a distorted bass part; the rhythm built into this instrument is far too obvious, and doesn't work with the more floaty stuff around it, so if I continue with this, I'll delete this track and find something more interesting to replace it.

Cool track. Kinda soothing, right? My friend likes too look for meditative music. I wonder if this would fit the bill? :) I'll pass it along.
